All US players who play in Europe get looked at. Damion Downs got looked at in a few sub appearances. He never started a game for the USA and probably never will.

Where is he? Hasn’t been since since the story about him leaving the scene of a car accident. Is he done, is he off? It’s been a nightmare for him and us.

His movement to escape the alleged accident is quicker than anything he’s produced on the pitch all season.

I never thought that I would see worse outfield players in a first team Saints line up than Ali Dia or Lee Todd but SR love breaking a record.

Would not be surprised to see him loaned back to Germany or similar in January. It just hasnt worked out. He'll likely stay on our books for multiple loans as nobody will be willing to pay close to what we paid for him (like an attacking ABK).

Would like to see us target a loan striker in January. Bound to be somebody decent in the PL looking minutes

I stuck a tenner on him to be the Championship top scorer after his great goal against Español in pre season. What a disappointment he’s been since then

Can't believe how badly it's gone since then - looked like we had unearthed a real gem! We're due a Christmas miracle - could it be that Downs comes on as a sub, shins one in then goes onto score 10 goals til the end of the season?! Cue loan move announced New Years Day...!

Most of our other signings of decent cost (Azaz, Jander, Scienza, Fellows) have been at worst decent (Azaz) or at best outstanding (Scienza).

No club gets all of them right and considering Downs supposedly has multiple Bundesliga clubs interested then he obviously has something - he has just never really got going at Saints.

I don't think we used any so could get two. Was seemingly part of the plan to avoid reliance on them for key players - good idea and now can use them for more specific short term again.

I would say we've had more hits in this window than we've had under SR before, I mentioned this a few weeks back. The scouting overhaul in the summer has had a benefit.

Jander, Leo, Fellows, Azaz are really top picks for this level. Standout quality.

The most important position was up front though, and whilst we identified the gap early on, we absolutely naffed it up with this guy. Let's forget this saga ever happened and hope they can pull out a Jander/Leo style ST signing, as our new scouts have shown they can see good players.

It's an odd situation really. He's obviously performed to a much higher standard in the past than what we've seen from him so far in a Saints shirt, because Spors obviously isn't that bad a judge of player that he would fork out that sum of money on someone who looks like he's never played any kind of competitive football before.

So there's obviously something else going on - a confidence issue or just not settling in England maybe. I just wish that we could see even the tiniest sign that there might actually be a half decent player in there and that he's worth persisting with, because so far I've seen nothing - no skill, no strength, no enthusiasm, no positional awareness... nothing.

And if he doesn’t want to be here, which is very clear tbh, then no point in him being greedy. If he wants to play in the WC next summer then he needs a move and if Saints have to be flexible on cutting the fee and losing a bit, Damion ought to do the same on wages. Only reasonable how diabolically bad he has been. And diabolical is being very generous!

Quarsie is improving and only cost £3m.

Quarshie I don’t mind as much, League 1 fee, German u20 and very quick. Poor on the ball which is an issue but he’s looked x100 a better footballer than Damion Downs (ok, very low bar!). Should make at worst a modest profit there, which doesn’t excite me in the slightest but as we know Rasmus creams in his boxers about such things, possibly better. I don’t mind when he’s on the team sheet. Won’t be on silly wages either, but it sounds like they have put Downs on larger wages (very silly).

Quarshie might be improving, fair point. But he still seems fairly clumsy on the ball, and sometimes appears to be a yard slow in his thinking. Whether his other strengths - speed and size - compensate for that I’m not sure.

Pretty clear from that that the club are willing to but very much of a case of ‘your move next Damion (literally)’ to him and his agent. Personally I’d waive the money if I were him and he’s anywhere as unhappy as he comes across on the pitch, return to a league and nation where he’s had a modicum of success and get my career going again. Because if he doesn’t it will be a string of subsidised loans and he will finish up in the pre-MLS regional leagues by 25, his full-time football career effectively over and his US team days a distant memory.

His agent only has to look at the careers of Guido Carrillo and lots of other SFC flops and outcasts to see what can happen.

There is a player in Quarshie, i really like him. Yes he is raw and has a lot to learn but i think he could go on to be a very decent defender.

I agree. The ingredients are there with him, and he is not expected to come in and be ‘the man’. Throw in he cost Rainey little, exactly what signing a young prospect should be.

No way can you put Downs and Quarshie in the same bracket.

Despite Quarshie being poor on the ball he's good at other things. Cost about £4m less as well. 

I've not seen one thing that Downs is good at yet.
