Keeper may be our priority but the club clearly rate Bazunu, and with Ramsdale still on the books, I think there's zero chance of any movement there.... bugger.

Similar up front. Archer and Stewart will be expected to put pressure on Armstrong. Nobody sells a decent striker in January anyway. SR will keep their powder dry until the summer.

Going to be all about some players finally pissing off. They may go for a dominant CB or experienced full back. Wood has control of the centre of defence, which is good to see, but who replaces him if he is injured.

In what meaningful way is Ramsdale still on our books?

If Howe doesn't want him, he's back here in the summer whether he likes it or not. I fear we may be left, yet again, with someone who doesn't want to be here.

He is a premier league quality keeper. If we don’t go up, he will never play for saints again. He probably won’t even if we do go up

Him being under contract at Saints until 30th June 2028 and getting his wages from Saints.

And saints getting money from Newcastle to pay for it all.

Only until the end of this season, not 2028 when his contract expires

He won’t play for us again whilst we are I this league.

You know that, I know that. The real world knows that

The question you asked was...

"In what meaningful way is Ramsdale still on our books?"

Being under contract at Southampton until 2028 is meaningful.

You are probably right but there is a small bit of doubt. If Newcastle don’t sign him there is only a small pool of clubs who are likely to be interested at the prem level (or equivalent) and even fewer who would be willing to meet his wage demands/pay the level of fee we would expect.

I don’t expect to see Ramsdale back but we can’t wholly rule it out.

Now we have what seems to be a half competant manager, I'm relatively comfortable with the squad we have. I think I'd only really be looking at a number 10 as competition / back-up to Azaz - i.e a replacement for Aribo.

Ideally I'd like a keeper to come in - probably a loan as the Ramsdale situation has caused us issues.

I think we have a relatively decent balance up top, now we seem to have found a way to make A.A a complete striker. I'm keen to see what Downs could do under Tonda.

Main focus has to be on out's

Aribo & Edozie will hopefully find a club wanting to take them. Bree to Charlton permantly. Matsuki probably needs to go.

I'm not sure about that , Newcastle are giving him games after their No1 keeper let in a few goals but they may well buy another keeper . Plus if he doesn't get in the WC squad he may come back ?

Ramsdale is playing because Pope is injured, out until Christmas at least.

I read that Pope had cost them a couple of games by rushing out the box and getting stranded etc , perhaps he was doing a Mccarthy and playing on injured ?

Groin injury during Spurs game. Some murmurings that they aren't entirely happy with Ramsdale and Ruddy might be preferred.

I think we need to sign another Attacking Mid / winger (subject to formation). Fellows, Azaz, Scienza are good, but after that the quality reduces significantly to JayRob and Fraser. Its evident already that we are protecting Scienza in matches circa 65min, at which point are attacking play suffers significantly and we end up inviting the oppo on to us a lot more - and i dread to think what this will look like if he gets injured. Attack is the best form of defence, especially for us... so yeah, i want another attacking mid/winger.

So - anyone still think we don't need some reinforcements in Jan?

After yet another shambolic second half performance after Scienza's batteries have run out, we desperately need some better options off the bench so we don't keep completely surrendering all momentum to the opposition like that.

In fantasy world, you’d get a GK, Striker, CB and someone who can replace Scienza effectively (and ship out a load -any of the current GK’s, Edwards, Matsuki, Aribo, Downs, Edozie etc.)

In reality I don’t expect us to do much at all, which will be a shame.

Prime time to utilise a couple of loans.

100% a new keeper

I could not care less if Ramsdale, who will never play for us again, is on the books..

Don't shoot the messenger, but some chatter doing the rounds that Bazunu is about to sign a new 4 year deal.

Completely agree. Patterson from Sunderland suits all parties.

Yeah that’s been on the cards for a while. Incredible really.

Even if true, it doesn't mean they view him as being first choice after a promotion. We will need three keepers each season.

Would be very surprised to see a goalkeeper come in. We’ve got a decent Championship goalkeeper already in the team, a decent PL one out on loan and a reasonable backup in McCarthy. I think we’ll look to reassess in summer depending on which league we’re in. If we do go up it’ll be Ramsdale, Baz and a another Caballero type of signing as third choice cover.

Bazunu is 23rd out of a list of 26 Championship keeper stats this season - so if that makes him decent then I'm a Dutchman. Ignoring the stats you only have to watch him to know he is substandard.

isn't this after being bottom of the champion and premier league stats in two consecutive years?

He's improving.

The way 'decent' is thrown around with Bazunu in the context absolutely bamboozles me.

'He's decent for the champ'  'He's fine for the champ'. It's horrible complacency, because neither are true and never have been.

Indeed.

During our promotion season in 2011/12, Kelvin Davis was 'decent' for the Championship. Probably let in a few too many at his near post but overall saved us a lot more points than he cost us.

Baz is so far away from that standard, he can only dream of ever being as good as KD (which he won't).

Absolutely, Kelvin Davis was what you'd describe as fine and decent for the Championship. He won us games, that Leeds away game won't ever be forgotten...! Bazunu isn't capable of pulling that out, we all know it. It's false hope to think otherwise. I just wish the club would cut their losses, 4 years is enough.

Having a half decent, half commanding GK will have a significant impact on an already suspect defence. Someone to come for a cross and command his area means less errors, less confusion, more confidence. Macca is far better at that, if only he could pass the ball.

That passage of play before their 2nd goal last night surely highlights the need for a more competent #1 keeper, before you even look at the shots that go through him

didnt Davis make the team of the season that year?

Amass' uncertain future - https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/cx2dpmggl61o

Would be all over this.

I guess we'll see what happens with Jelert first. A strange loan really, looked like he came with pedigree and has actually looked capable when played - but that's what, 1 or 2 games? I imagine he'll go, as well as Bree, so we'll have a full back slot to fill.
