He'll probably go onto have a great career and get a big move in 2-3 years time and everyone will be up in arms that we sold him too early and too cheap but as of today the fee being talked about is a very good deal for everyone. 15

Exactly - i’m sure in years to come we’ll wish we still had him, but right now I don’t think we need him. If that money allows us to keep other key players then it’s a good deal at this moment in time - we’re never going to keep him long enough to see what he could become, so might as well cash in whilst it’s a good time for us.

I still think an offer will come in for Jander that will match our valuation and he'll leave too, just a hunch. The other thing about Shea leaving is that it frees up funds for signings but we will need another CM as a replacement, so even though striker is the key position we need players for, we may still have to wait longer. It doesn't help that we have too much striker dross on our books still. I like Shea, I think he has grown as a footballer and when he plays for Northern Ireland he's usually one of the best players on the pitch. He certainly proved me wrong because I thought he wasn't great in our promotion campaign and would go on to be one of those young punts that don't make it. 1

Spot on and if true that he won’t sign a new contract, think we have done the correct thing in cashing in, we are not in the luxurious position of being able to let him run his contract down and around £30 million is a decent amount for someone with massive potential, but still a lot to prove.. As much as I had hoped we could keep this oven ready premiership squad together, his departure out of the midfield department, I personally feel is the least damaging to us. I do not want to see anymore depart, especially Jander.

HarvSFC Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago Shame to lose Shea Charles. He became the moments guy last season. Leicester away, Arsenal in the cup and Middlesbrough in the play-offs, which was then rendered void. Had that goal counted, who knows, he may have wanted to extend his contract here, but another consequence of being expelled from the play-offs. However, out of him, Scienza, Jander and THB, I'd keep the rest over Charles and hope we do so. While I also hope we get a good sell on, on Charles, as with his international performances and soon to be Premier League, he'll get a bigger move. Although, Fulham are looking a bit rocky at the minute, Arbeloa's a risk after Marco Silva and they're going for Real Madrid youngsters, so could be another West Ham, forced to sell Fernandes a year later due to relegation.

I am wary that this may not be the case, and that another sale is required for any serious additions. None of us know the financial state of the club until last year's accounts are published, although clearly we had enough to sanction Peretz and Larin's transfers within the PSR window. Just from a balancing the books perspective, this is the business we seem to have done so far this summer (ignoring unknown distribution of installments): Money out Peretz, Dobbin, Larin signed for circa £18.5M. Drop in parachute payments of circa £15M. Money in Fernandes sell on of circa £6M Bllard sell on of circa £1M Charles transfer sale of circa £25M x 0.85, so circa £21m coming in. So currently we're on about -£5.5M on outright transfer dealings and drop in tv monies, although i'm aware we seem to have done a lot of work reducing the wage bill and outstanding loan debts/interest payments. We need to sign a new CM and CF with the remaining money. And personally i am not happy going into the season with Long as our only GK backup. Remaining assets we may see leave: Ramsdale, Archer, BBD, Bazunu, Edozie, JayRob, Sugawara, Downs. Not clear how many of those we'll be able to shift for meaningful money. Edit - if the AA january sale is included (circa £7M) we are roughly balanced on recent transfer sales. Edited 5 hours ago by Saint86

Don't forget we also tried to bring in Dan Neil, which would have already happened had Rangers not beaten us to him. The problem is the players we still have that we don't want - that nobody else seeming really wants either.

Hodgey Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago Charles always going to happen, he’s also a player who looks better whenever he plays at a higher level so it’s probably a good move all round. Robinsons progress has stalled but we know there is a player there. We can’t risk him being good enough for first team as we need to go up this year so seems like a good move (have Scienza, Dobbin and Edizie who can play there) Current squad looks play off capable but not autos. For that we need a better back up keeper, a big powerful midfielder and another bully centre forward. One thing you need in this league is power and strength, not sure we have enough. Dont have money for those players so will need to play the loan system well. Coventry played a blinder last year with Rushworth and Onyeka, as did we with Larin and Peretz 1

That was exactly my understanding of Dragan’s comments, too. However, whether this is fact or a sales pitch, none of us know. When looking at finances, we have saved on reduction in some high wages, as well, but probably had to pay off players through bonuses this summer for ‘promotion’ to keep them on side. Ticket prices are largely unchanged this season, so effectively there is a further cost there. We also don’t really know how much of a loss the club can afford to sustain this season in the hope of big bucks coming in after promotion. In terms of players, with Robinson going on loan, I wonder if the thoughts are to use Dobbin wide, or possibly Archer, rather than Edozie. Similarly, will we bring in another midfielder, as a couple of the under 21s (O’B W and Romeo A) have impressed in pre-season, and we have Bragg and Williams to consider as well. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a centre back come in to replace Quarshie, and to pressurise Stephens/Wood. However, we have potentially at least six players too many in the squad who are surplus to likely requirements. My list would include two keepers, Sugawara, Edozie, BBD, Down. There may be more, and certainly I’d expect some youngsters out on loan.

I reckon with the fee at 25m including citys sell on we've probably doubled our money. 1
hypochondriac Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago (edited) The key statement from Solak was that our squad would be as good or better than last season. Currently that is not the case and so we will have to get in a special couple of players in order for that to be true. Dobbin has certainly helped but we will need to replace Stewart with a replacement that is at least as good. Not sure how that will work with Charles. Edited 4 hours ago by hypochondriac
