Obviously a very good player with a very high potential but out of all of our most saleable assets probably the one we'd miss the least. I'd certainly rather we sell him that THB, Jander or Scienza. He'll probably go onto have a great career and get a big move in 2-3 years time and everyone will be up in arms that we sold him too early and too cheap but as of today the fee being talked about is a very good deal for everyone. 9

Exactly - i’m sure in years to come we’ll wish we still had him, but right now I don’t think we need him. If that money allows us to keep other key players then it’s a good deal at this moment in time - we’re never going to keep him long enough to see what he could become, so might as well cash in whilst it’s a good time for us.

I still think an offer will come in for Jander that will match our valuation and he'll leave too, just a hunch. The other thing about Shea leaving is that it frees up funds for signings but we will need another CM as a replacement, so even though striker is the key position we need players for, we may still have to wait longer. It doesn't help that we have too much striker dross on our books still. I like Shea, I think he has grown as a footballer and when he plays for Northern Ireland he's usually one of the best players on the pitch. He certainly proved me wrong because I thought he wasn't great in our promotion campaign and would go on to be one of those young punts that don't make it. 1

Agreed. How I feel about this transfer is entirely dependent on how many of the other big names we keep or sell. 2

Spot on and if true that he won’t sign a new contract, think we have done the correct thing in cashing in, we are not in the luxurious position of being able to let him run his contract down and around £30 million is a decent amount for someone with massive potential, but still a lot to prove.. As much as I had hoped we could keep this oven ready premiership squad together, his departure out of the midfield department, I personally feel is the least damaging to us. I do not want to see anymore depart, especially Jander.

HarvSFC Posted 22 minutes ago Posted 22 minutes ago Shame to lose Shea Charles. He became the moments guy last season. Leicester away, Arsenal in the cup and Middlesbrough in the play-offs, which was then rendered void. Had that goal counted, who knows, he may have wanted to extend his contract here, but another consequence of being expelled from the play-offs. However, out of him, Scienza, Jander and THB, I'd keep the rest over Charles and hope we do so. While I also hope we get a good sell on, on Charles, as with his international performances and soon to be Premier League, he'll get a bigger move. Although, Fulham are looking a bit rocky at the minute, Arbeloa's a risk after Marco Silva and they're going for Real Madrid youngsters, so could be another West Ham, forced to sell Fernandes a year later due to relegation.

It's also obvious that if you fail to go up you need to balance the books. It doesn't matter what you come back with to try to counter this. Charles is leaving and this is one of the reasons why. 1

I am wary that this may not be the case, and that another sale is required for any serious additions. None of us know the financial state of the club until last year's accounts are published, although clearly we had enough to sanction Peretz and Larin's transfers within the PSR window. Just from a balancing the books perspective, this is the business we seem to have done so far this summer (ignoring unknown distribution of installments): Money out Peretz, Dobbin, Larin signed for circa £18.5M. Drop in parachute payments of circa £15M. Money in Fernandes sell on of circa £6M Bllard sell on of circa £1M Charles transfer sale of circa £25M x 0.85, so circa £21m coming in. So currently we're on about -£5.5M on outright transfer dealings and drop in tv monies, although i'm aware we seem to have done a lot of work reducing the wage bill and outstanding loan debts/interest payments. We need to sign a new CM and CF with the remaining money. And personally i am not happy going into the season with Long as our only GK backup. Remaining assets we may see leave: Ramsdale, Archer, BBD, Bazunu, Edozie, JayRob, Sugawara, Downs. Not clear how many of those we'll be able to shift for meaningful money. Edit - if the AA january sale is included (circa £7M) we are roughly balanced on recent transfer sales. Edited 3 minutes ago by Saint86

He specifically mentioned players not going who had only been here a year with the implication being that those who had not been would be freer to leave if we received an acceptable offer. It was always obvious when we failed to gain promotion that we would be selling some players. Every team does it.

We could bring in a loan CM that would only require a small fee and wages - either way there will be 3 CMs and we ideally need 4 so something will need to be done. Don't forget we also tried to bring in Dan Neil, which would have already happened had Rangers not beaten us to him. The problem is the players we still have that we don't want - that nobody else seeming really wants either.
