If JWP is on a free then so be it, but I can't see West Ham letting him go on that basis. I hope we're not spending £2/3m that could be invested elsewhere in a more dynamic player.in MF, CB, or CF

Anyone saying they wouldn't have JWP back is mad, in my opinion.

Just look at the lineup announcement yesterday, everyone complaining about the CM and not having enough options etc.

Matsuki doesn't work there, Shea is gone, Jander is injured/looking to leave, downes will have suspensions.

JWP will be a solid option, great around the dressing room for the squad and despite his limitations will always put in a shift.

...as an older version of the fairly limited player he was when he was here. Don't get me wrong, I'd take him over Bragg who's a downgrade on Smallbone imo, but we need someone more dynamic who'll carry the ball, and provide a goal threat from open play.

Harvey Elliott on loan? He wants to play and will easily get 30+ games in our team. Ball playing dynamic midfielder, who looked good in the same England U21 team as Palmer, Rogers and Anderson. Bit ambitious maybe...

totally agree with this as the wish list.  Not so sure on all the names though or that we'll be successful in recruiting the standard we want.

Certainly don't see JWP as the MF we need.

I'd say that's very ambitious! He's a cracking player, and needs to get regular games somewhere. I reckon he'll end up abroad somewhere.

Well I can't agree with that. Nowhere near enough pace and dynamism

I wouldn’t say that’s essential for a CM pairing. Neither Morgan nor Wanyama were particularly fast but they were the best pair we’ve had playing there in my lifetime. JWP covers a lot of ground and is generally very reliable when it comes to fitness. I’d certainly have him back on loan, especially if it ,want we’d have a bit more money free to replace THB.

I predict that JWP will look a class above in this league. Too much negativity about him for my liking. If hes asked to sit and hold then we will not see the best of him. If hes given license to go forward, getting tbe ball a little further forward than just in front of the defence then I think we will see how good he is.

Sure theres probabaly younger quicker out there but this league has always required expereince and players that do the basics exceedingly well. Flair and higher talents are in tbe PL. We are not.

I'd have him as long as we also get a more attack minded CM who can carry the ball. Him, Downes and Bragg would be appalling options.

I dont think it makes people mad,  there have been some solid, reasonable  reasons why,  that have been stated above. Yes, he always had his plus points but, but Im in the against camp here, mainly because I feel he was a large part of the problem we faced for many seasons,  ie: rotating the ball and essentially going nowhere. I believe he would be detrimental to the side for that reason and a few more that were, as I say, mentioned before.

Why are the only options an over the hill crab or no one at all. We can and should buy a dynamic charles replacement instead

I like jwp I just don't think that Downes Bragg and jwp are good enough or different enough options as a group. A lot hinges on if we keep Jander and if not who we would get to replace him.

TBF I would hardly describe 31 as over the hill. It's not his fault that he hasn't been played as much as he'd like. I'm sure he'd have been available for every game.

I have it on good authority that Prowsey wanted to come back as soon as the season after he left (the summer we were back in the Prem). Apparently his family weren't settling well with living in London at the time.

I think he'd be a good addition to a Championship squad. We need to remember the level that we're at.

I agree we have a lack of dynamism in CM. As good as Downes, Jander, JWP and Bragg sounds, they are all a bit "samey" (Jander is a decent ball carrier but the others not so)

If we could get all his wages covered then maybe but I’m not great on the return of the prodigal son. I’m hoping our SC replacement will be a lot better in the long run.

I'd heard similar, and that he didn't particularly want to go at all, but was told before the season end that he'd be moved on.

2023-24 c3000 league minutes, 7 goals

7 goals + 7 assists (aka goal involvements for ducky) in 37 prem games. 4assists in 10 Europa league games (0.38goal involvements per game).

Azaz managed 11G 8A in 43 games last season - playing in a more advanced role in a better side in a worse league (0.44 goal involvements per game).

Obviously after that JWP had the misfortune to be stalked by Nuno and ultimatley exiled to an awful relegation destined Burnley.

He's a very good player to have as an option in the championship. Probably wants to enjoy the final years of his career and I can't think of many better places for that to happen than at saints - especially if it's a promotion season.

We wanted the money and couldnt afford the wages.

If we are looking at 1, or 2, starting CBs then I would look at Tangana or Okoli.

I would still be picking up the phone to Manchester City for Stephen Mfuni too

That was 3 years ago though and he hasn't played a great deal in that time.

Would another PL side not fancy him or has the weight gain put them off?

Yeah, let's get him playing in the area Azaz operates in....great idea.

I share the reservations about JWP's crab tendencies but he's smart and versatile, and he can play a role that leaves the more creative elements to others. I'm sure his engine is still pretty good.

One thing that would be great to see is JWP and Manning stood over danger area free kicks. One's a lefty and one's a righty, and they're both capable of hitting top corners. It's a nightmare scenario for keepers - where to align the wall, which side to protect. At this level they know each keeper's weaker sides, and that could influence who takes the shot.

Not what Im saying. If he one of 2 CMs and hes the one who goes forward he will be decent. If hes the sitting one, not so much.

Downes is going to be busy partnering a non tackling, non closing down JWP who is looking to go forward. Good luck with that Flin.

I think he's a poor man's Foden who will struggle to make it in the PL, but wouldn't want to drop to the championship. He's over his ACL now and a season long loan somewhere makes sense for him

On the basis that Downes and Jander are our first choice CMs, and will remain so after the window closes, then JWP and Bragg will be fine as back ups.

I was a fan of JWP, I think he tried hard even when things went against us and his dead balls were key for us in the Prem, but while i know he is not the same player, I think in the Championship he still has something to offer and he would be comfortable here.

Would I prefer better? Sure. But SR love an old boy returning,  and he fits that.  Depends on the cost though.

Plus if we sell THB it keeps our double barrelled name quota up.

I've been thinking about it and think I'd summarise it as:

Is he a decent signing for a Championship club that already has its first choice CMs nailed down? Yes

Is he a plug and play replacement for what Shea Charles brings to the table? No

Does he need to be? Not necessarily, it depends on how the manager intends on playing

I would prefer a bit more athleticism, height and physicality in the midfield personally but I can see the logic in it, especially as JWP and Schlotterbeck would add some more leadership to the team

I don't disagree (although that is largely down to him being stuck with Nuno at forest and Wham.

I was just providing some context to the initial point / comparison being made about JWP being utilised effectively in a more advanced role - I.e., if he is used as rotation for azaz.

And In truth he does offer us a lot of flexibility over where he plays - right mid, right back, cm, CDM playmaker, and cover for azaz 🤷

JWP would be a very disappointing Charles replacement for me

It’s been depressing enough watching the crablike midfield we’ve put out these last few games. Signing a mega crab instead of someone who can run with the ball would take the biscuit.

Yes it was 3 years ago but JWP's 1 game for us in the Championship showed he was a class above. He'd get into most teams in this league and I think West Ham would be stupid to let him go.

We’ve bid for Falchener the CB from Viking who Wrexham were after a few weeks ago

He's fucking massive, and also somebody who Alfie House mentioned loosely recently. That'll be the potential THB replacement for if he goes.

Probably fair to assume everybody he does that about is being worked on at this point.
