WAC - he simply can not let it go with Spygate.   Pontificating from his ivory tower about how this was one of the darkest days in Saints history and even today telling 5 live the episode will haunt Eckert for years and seeming to indicate that he wasn't punished enough.

I would think Eckert will have put this behind him the moment the FA told him his punishment.  Equally, despite what Blackkmore thinks, this was really a nothing burger but a kangaroo court by the EFL and Gibson made it a far bigger deal than it really was.

It was a dark day in our history.

It will haunt Tonda for years. In 50 years time it will very likely be on the first paragraph of his obituary.

I don't want our journalists to cover up that stuff. They're not fans and they don't need to be.

How about you stop whining on about Steve Gibson and kangaroo courts because jesus christ no one gives a fuck now.

None of that especially bothers me but on the topic of Adam Blackmore, the standard of commentary on Solent has really struggled since he lost the support of the excellent Dave Merrington. When I watch games with Blackmore's commentary, I realise just how much of what he's saying isn't actually what's happening on the pitch.

Also, Alfie House has really shown up Adam Blackmore as a journalist.

It's unlikely to haunt Tonda. Does everyone splutter over their words to mention spying whenever Bielsas name comes up? Nope.

Possibly related to the thirty year management career he had before he even got to Leeds but yeah great point genius.

So at the end of one person's career it will be the first paragraph of their obituary, but at the end of the other person's career it will be forgotten?

Even on a day like today you can't help but be a contrarian, argumentative, sanctimonious cunt can you.

Well, yeah, because everything he does from here will be a response to him causing us to be kicked out of the richest football match in the world. The thing that led us to being on the national bloody news.

If we get promoted in May do you reckon it might just get a mention? I'm going to wager it will. If he leads Germany to winning the world cup in 20 years it will be the still be the starting point of any profile of him.

Bielsa didn't get Leeds kicked out of anything, and until we started going on about it it was only Derby fans that ever cared. No one gives a fuck apart from people on this forum.

Do you see how different things can be different?

My darkest days were us being stuffed 9-0. I couldn’t give a toss that our manager sent someone to watch another club train to give us the upper hand. It shows how much he wants to win and we’ve been a better side since Eckert’s been in charge. I’ve already forgotten about it!

We’ve had some right shit in charge since Hassenhuttl, now it’s time to enjoy watching a side and a manager that are right up for it and winning games.

COYS! FOP!

Well perhaps if Leeds were kicked out as we were then the media may mention it all the time. Leeds got treated lightly and we got treated heavily. It didnt help that the Northern journos got their say and ours couldnt, add to that Gibsons influence was important.

Turns out that after the report by the FA it was not such a big thing and the EFL acted quickly and broke their own rules re 14 days, so to keep the Play off final and all the money in place.

I didnt hear that!! Personally I feel hes a brilliant commentator, but I dont like how he is not defending our club on the media, but he's got to give an unbiased position, shame others dont.

As for a stain on Saints reputation, I dont give a flying as I'm tired of being the club that rolls over to have its tummy tickled, opposition fans dont really give a jot about us, they just want to come to SMS have a great day 3 points and leave, well now its not like that anymore and long may it be.

And our club has many other more shameful things, as do all others, Bob Higgins being the biggest stain of all

When I watch games with him commenting he doesn't seem to actually comment on the game and keep up with play, he's waffling on about something irrelevant most of the time

Stop worrying about it, it'll be fine.

I’m not worrying about anything. You’re the weirdo making Heysel references.

It’s a thing that is going to define his career whether he likes it or we like it or whether it’s fair or not.

Moving on from discussing Tonda's obituary...!

Think Blackmore's decent enough but I've not really noticed this issue personally and sometimes I manage to listen to the Solent commentary in the ground as well (if it's not that noisy). If anything I think it's worse with other broadcasters.

Case in point - the 2024 playoff final's commentary build-up to the goal consisted of nearly a minute of Martinball possession. This was ignored by Talksport, Sky and Solent (Ian Wilding with Dean Hammond) who were unanimously talking about Leeds instead until the defence-splitting pass that put AA through on goal. For me, that is intolerable.

I think while he can get things wrong, the energy he brings to the commentary makes up for it and there's a good chance he's actually talking about us instead of getting all excited about how wonderful the opposition are.

On Spygate, I think although he and Jo went over the top in the aftermath calling for Eckert's sacking, they should be allowed to express their own views. I get the argument for circling the wagons but think it's worse if a commentator can't express their own opinion, for fear of being shut out by the club that they're covering. I don't need to hear a happy-clappy commentator that just spouts the party line.

I am very fond of Dave Merrington and his commentary but I think he had his own faults and came in for a lot of stick when he was working. We all know we don't want to concede a goal!

Yeah if things were completely different then it would all be completely different. Great point.

Always feel it's a difficult wire to balance on with local journalists.  On the one hand we want them to be supportive of the club and back them, and on the other hand we also want them asking the difficult uncomfortable questions.

In terms of Blackmore, for a radio commentator I think he does a decent job of conveying excitement but I've also noticed that during games he quite often gets things wrong.

We'll have to agree to disagree - I think he's young enough and the infraction moderate enough that people will forget about it though.

Tend to agree but ultimately it'll be dependent on the rest of his career and how well he does.  No one really talks about Bielsa and spying because there's so much other stuff about him to talk about and I'd actually forgotten the whole thing with Bielsa spying until this all blew up.  It'll be the same with Tonda if he goes on to become a success.

I dont dislike him, as has been stated I think his reluctance to defend the club, or at least try to present their side over Spygate put me off him a bit. I just hope he lets it go now and concentrates on the football.

I quite like Blackmore's coverage but I think he is hampered by his summariser, Tessem. His contributions leave a void in the commentary. A really good player but not a media person.

I dont mind Tessem's observations AFTER the match when he can think about it and give a considered opinion but his in game commentary is absolutely bloody awful.

Me saying "if we get promoted this year it will get mentioned" or "if we win the League Cup the following year, it will get mentioned" or "if he wins the World Cup with Germany it would still get mentioned" is not me "crying about it". It's just recognising it is a defining moment for him, it's an origin story from his first season in management. It's a real shame his origin story isn't that he took over with us in 18th or whatever it was and immediately took us to the Prem.

Anyway, let's see come May time if we get promoted lets see on this forum if a) no one even mentions it because people have forgotten about it or b) everyone mentions it.

I'm going for b). Just a hunch.

So Pep being in a doping incident when he was a player (eventually cleared) has been forgotten, I doubt many know about it as his later achievements overshadow this. Tonda has a decade or so to make this irrevelent or low in the headlines. It will take a longtime of course and the TV etc will always bring it up aka 9-0

Tonda puts his foot down, as the combine harvester nears the orphanage. "Spygate?! Define me?! I think not!" 🙂

Who knows what his future holds?

Hopefully he's a lot of managerial years ahead. Quite possibly across Europe, where this would more rapidly fade into the background. Here, hacks will bring it up as it's the lowest hanging fruit.

Where they position it, within our many future champions League victories, will be more interesting. Always taking the easy path will make it tough for them to criticise a national treasure. 🙂

Those who think it was a big will go on bringing it up because they need to carry on convincing themselves that it was. Those with the same perspective as those sitting on the independent FA panel will see it for what it was, a breech of the rules that warranted no more than a slap on the wrist and don’t do it again sanction.

Should Eckert spend the rest of his career being defined by a massive over reaction and disproportionate sanction by the EFL? Some seem to think so it seems. Given what the FA panel had to say about the situation I would argue that view is just another disproportionate reaction to what were three relatively minor offences.

You really don't like it that Tonda has not had a ban. Throughout this episode you have, like many others, been expecting a significant ban for him. Unlike others you used a sarcastic, supercilious writing style taking the piss out of anyone who thought differently to you. It makes you look like rather silly now.

Why don't you stop being such a cunt and instead join the rest of the human race ?

I wouldn't have quite used that vocabulary selection, but you have correctly identified the empathic, sensitive, infrequent and not at all self-opinionated contributions of that poster..

Whoops, I only noticed Tamesaint's contribution after I had typed the above, so wouldn't want to be thought of as joining any mass pile on. I'm still going to leave my postn though..

Edit: too many 'contributions'..

Nothing against Blackmore, but his commentary is far less biased toward us then the skates or bournemuff ones. If you listen to their guys, they would have you believe that they are the best teams in the country. Not sure if either of them are actually fans of the clubs.

The vast majority of people on here were expecting a ban - you only need a cursory look at this forum in the days before the announcement to see that. As did most of the commentators/observers. Good luck in making out I was part of some minority.

Happy to stand by what I thought and said - others had similar thoughts like Glen from TSP. I never wanted him banned but I certainly expected it. Him and the club have done very well to get the result we did.

Let's hope he uses this to get us out of the Championship come May.

All the best x

Talking of mentioning things: when we play the away fixture at Fratton Park,  I wonder if Blackmore and the rest of the media will keep mentioning that Pompey haven't won a league game against us for 22 years?
