Either way, having listened to it... what a fucking shite question. Adam even admitted the sheer banality of his questioning afterwards by backtracking and saying something along the paraphrased line 'that's why you're the manager, you made the changes and you won'

It was a fair question, perhaps poorly worded with the use of the word “doubt”.  The team selection did raise eyebrows. Just look at the usual meltdown posts on the match day thread.

FFS - we have some complete idiots as supporters.

Tonda was laughing with him about three sentences later. It was a light hearted comment. I think it was what counts a joke in Tonda world - or at least I hope it was.

Has struck me before that it is completely unacceptable for super-rich football managers (Morriniho was particularly poor) to put the precarious careers of journalists (no doubt with mortgages and families to support) in jeopardy with their bullying antics in press conferences.

Blackmore didn't mind putting Tonda's career in jeopardy though, did he? When we needed the local media to fight our corner, he was one of the first to line up behind Gibbo's Teesside campaign against Tonda.

Blackmore doesn’t like Tonda, that much is obvious.

Compare his questioning to the cosying up to Martin when we had about 2 points after 25 games in the PL. Night and day.

Yeah it's pretty obvious. He won't stop bringing up spygate either.

It was a shite question, but does that really matter?

Pretty sad if he feels he needs to step away from X. Feels like an overreaction, but who knows what shit messages he was sent.

I'd rather he told them to fuck off, and carry on as normal.

Not so sure it was fellas.  Said it was the biggest stain in the clubs history. We literally had a pedo coach for 20 years for starters.  Tonda was accused of bullying and Adam continued that on without knowing any facts. He continues to tell everyone that he would have sacked Tonda. Tonda doesn’t like him, and I respect tonda for that.  I quite like Adam Blackmore and think he does an ok job. But fuck me, he loves being centre of attention.  Even this reeks of attention seeking.

Gets on high horse about someone "not knowing the facts" before the next sentence deciding that Tonda "doesn't like" Blackmore based on nothing.

I don’t think bringing Higgins up adds a great deal here either, I think a little classless from you.

Blackmore talking about how he would have sacked him is him at least show a consistency of view. He is not hiding or pretending he thought something else for convenience, which is what you get from Talksport divs who just swing in the wind. What Blackmore is not saying at all, is that he would sack him now, so be careful what you are implying.

Relegated clubs have 2 chances to get back in the Prem. In first those two seasons we get kicked out of the play offs and in the second we start off four points down. It's not great.

A dumb question (which begs the question why didn't he do 2 mins of prep??) seriously blown out of all proportion. Tonda dealing with it in a WGS fashion and people reading way too much into it. Blackmore then making himself look like a bit of a tit by harping on a out it on Adam and Joe.

Seriously is this anything for anyone to get upset about??? Simply unbelievable that he's felt the need to leave a social media platform - what is wrong with some of the helmets who call themselves fans?

Not on any high horse at all.  You can tell he’s not that keen on him by how he answers his questions versus Alfie and Saints club guy.  Again I’m only presuming. But I think that’s fairly obvious.

Again … it’s not tasteless to bring up something that is far worse than what Adam & others I’ll add have said is the worst stain in the clubs history.  I’d say far worse things have happened and our own local journalist piling on a young man in his first job was at best poor form.  Again that’s my opinion. I felt that we needed to be united together. Adam isn’t one of us, he’s an employee of the BBC and that showed during the “scandal of the century”.

He’s not saying he would sack him now because it’s bloody obvious that they won’t.  I for one felt the question was ok… but what I felt was daft was his continuing to bring it up and then be offended by others not liking his line of questioning. Bizarre behaviour from Adam and he’s let himself down tonight while trying to play the victim.

He’s got main character syndrome bless him.

I don't want the BBC Solent Sports Editor to be "one of us" like some on here seem to want him to be.

His job is not just to blindly support the club and give it faaack off Steve Gibson faaack off FA etc etc like some dinlow down the pub.

There's a difference between leaving social media in a hissy fit because someone disagrees with you and not being allowed to travel in the front of your car because of police advice due to death threats. While Blackmore didn't instigate the witch hunt against Tonda he appeared to be an active and enthusiastic participant in it once it had started.

participant in supporting death threats?

he simply echoed many fans' view that he should have been sacked in May.

Honestly, not sure why we’ve all suddenly turned on Blackmore. I didnt see anything wrong with asking Tonda what rhe majority of us were thinking.

I think hes great, and really enjoy listening to him.

As for Spygate, how dare he hold an opinion that a lot of Saints fans also shared at the time. Lock him up and throw away the key. Jesus.

“Bandwagon of hatred”, some people need to man up. If Blackmore can’t stand the heat he needs to get out of the kitchen, god knows what he’d be like if he faced real hatred. He’s a cockwomble, An Alan Partridge tribute act, but I doubt anybody hates the chump.

I like Blackmore. His commentary is above average and I like Going home with him and Jo.

I don't think he had a good Spygate. At a time when the world was against us and there was a  media pile on he could have tried to defend our corner. I am not expecting him to be a fan (although that is clearly a requirement for a North East journalist) but I never heard him offering any sort of mitigation. For example he was questioned on 5 Live about possible Tonda bans and comparisons were drawn with the Canadian women's coach. He didn't point out that a year ban for her meant missing just 3 matches. For example does anyone outside Southampton know that 2 of the 3 members of the EFL court had Middlesbrough connections? He could have mentioned that when questioned about the suitability of a play offs ban on national radio.

I would not be surprised if Tonda disliked him.

Not that long ago when Blackmore had a nasty eye infection, after an interview Tonda offered to get the club doctor to come and see him. Does that sound like he hates Blackmore?

People need to stop making something out of nothing. The internet is becoming a total cesspit that has robbed people of their ability to think.

What? like not being able to distinguish between a potentially strained working relationship and an extreme state of loathing/hostility? 😄

As @Tamesaint says above, Blackmore had a poor (i would says extremely) Spygate .

I listened to the his post FA spygate special last night on BBC Sounds - even then he was still attacking Tonda over the whole affair, and offered essentially no signs of reflection/apology/embarrassment over his pile on during spygate and his hammering of Tonda for the (false) "bullying" accusations.

Its like he's oblivious to his own influence/impact and the responsibility that goes with it. He makes his living out of the club - and yet didn't exercise any loyalty at the time. No defense was given, no challenge of the narrative, no highlighting the trumped up bullying charges and lack of evidence. He just spent the whole affair believing every thing that was published in the press, hammering the club and Tonda, calling for him to be sacked, and condemning him for bullying (even when the efl report contained zero evidence of Tonda bullying junior staff). It was all simply quite poor from him. The minimum he should have done is acknowledge he got it wrong and apologized to Tonda over the bullying stuff imho. Blackmore is his own man, is meant to be a journalist, and should have been capable of reading the EFL report himself and seeing the bullying stuff was a blatant stitch up 🤷‍♂️.

He did none of that, showed no ounce of loyalty to the club, and just joined the national media pile on - which (in fairness) would been excusable if he hadn't got it wrong. But the bullying stuff was clearly bollocks at the time, and where we are now, in the face of the FA report and the total lack of EFL evidence at the time, i really do think Blackmore should have taken the time to front up about it and admit he got it wrong.

Apart from that, i do enjoy his enthusiasm for the club, his commentary with Tessem, and his podcast material. I don't want him to stop covering the club, everyone is flawed at the end of the day - but he had a mare over Spygate and Eckert, and his inability to own that leaves a sour taste for me.

Pretty accurate and fair post that.

I’m more annoyed about his Spygate bullshit and lack of retraction after the facts were published.

I couldn’t give a toss about the team selection, we all thought it on Wednesday.

Im sure he’ll reference it on his commentary this weekend 😂

Yes, my only issue with Blackmore is that he fully bought in to the EFL report and was particulalry forceful in his opinions. I cannot believe for a minute that Tonda isn't aware of his views at the time.

When the FA report came out and corrected a ton of mis-information then yes, Blackmore should have looked up and admitted he was wrong and totally bought the EFL narrative over the clubs view.

As has been stated before he's had a bit of a nightmare over Spygate. His audience is Southampton related, he can have his opinions of course but in his position maybe you should just balance that out somewhat publicly if not privately.

Possibly a difficult tightrope for him to walk.

If he’d just given the clubs view there would be criticism that he’s acting as their voice piece in the media. He’s often panned for taking too soft a stance and not asking the difficult or awkward questions.

He should be reporting rather than just giving a view the club and supporters want to hear. But perhaps, just perhaps, he thought he was in tune with the public mood at the time (remember an early poll on here for example).

I like his coverage (as an exile when I hear it) but he has come down on the wrong side of the fence here. But it’s just an opinion given, move on.

I don't argue that. But he essentially condemned Eckert for bullying without exercising any impartial assessment of the EFL report at the time. There isn't a single shred of evidence in that EFL report that shows Eckert bullied junior staff. Yet it almost became the principle stick used in the press to hammer the club and Eckert, and to drive home the punishment. Blackmore, regrettably, just joined the national media pile on.

The press idealistically should be better than this (but obviously that isn't the case and society just accepts it and we limp on), but Blackmore particularly (as the BBC sports journalist for saints) had to be more dutiful and responsible with his coverage at the time. Ultimately he got it wrong on this occasion (that happens, everyone is human), but it's going to take a while to wash with the fans (and I suspect the club) if he doesn't own it and show a small bit of contrition over the bullying stuff.

Fair point re the bullying accusations, rather than just the spying incident. Although didn’t the EFL refer to the analysts being under pressure ‘from top down’ to complete the task (but not pinning this on Tonda by name)?

I think AB is an easily recognisable character for many of us if you see the media as simply another form of business - he likes a bit of kiss up kick down.  Always seen him as a decent commentator and pundit, he's getting on for 50 and been doing the job a long time - in the heritage BBC career path he would have been on national TV by now, Football Focus, MOTD etc. - so I sense a bit of snark, a local sleb wanting to be a national sleb.  He was best alongside Merrington, as he respected DM as an elder statesman who had managed, coached and played at the top level, and this is pretty much his take with Saints managers, a subjective approach. When Tessem starting as the number two I was shocked how many times AB would disagree and shut down his opinions, put him back in his box - a player with over 500 career appearances, 100 odd for Saints in the Prem, plus international caps.  Tonda is 33, cool as a fucking cucumber in handling pressure that would cripple most coaches, and AB likely finds that hard to understand.

If he's representing the Beeb, then there's a balanced view to be presented.

Sports, in practice, works a bit differently. Reporting is often an editorial taking a view in order to increase clicks and opinion.

They are often written by people who have little, or no, understanding, of how a club, or any organisation, is run, coached or managed. It doesn't get much beyond winning = great while defeat=disaster, resulting in hyper-fawning or hyper-criticism on a weekly cycle.

For me, his importance is stopping Jo Tessem drift into incomprehensible points that take a half to express. Beyond that, he's easily replaceable, as he goes off on plenty of tangents himself. I'd quickly get over any changes in the lineup.

Blackmore lost any semblance of balance on Spygate. Generally his lines of questioning have that standard fawn/sports-critique cycle.

A lot of managers are just so used to having to put up with it, they just offer a line and move on.

When the questioners are called on a point, they show themselves to be ill informed, brittle and unable to show any kind of response. Blackmore is far from the first in the Beeb.

Nigel Pearson broke one of their regional reporters with a single pushback, after a similar swell of opinion to get him sacked. The Beeb sent down someone more senior, who was just as useless. But Leicester's media team, and the club didn't want to rock any boats, and Pearson trotted out a few bland replies until it went away.

Blackmore got called on his question, stumbled, tried fawning but then couldn't get away from all his other questions being tied to the first one. Why he did that, only he can say. In isolation, they were "he did well". But all phrased in a way that undermined Tonda's squad management. They all had "despite not playing for X amount of time" before Tonda shut that down, citing Black ore not getting his facts right.

There was a nice pause after Blackmore stumbled over a "I guess that's why you're the manager."

Was Tonda thinking of replying "No thanks to you." or "and that's why you're a hack without a clue." I guess his manager media training kicked in.

I like Blackmore and it's not particularly fair that he has to put up with the level of abuse of a footballer without their salary. People would be the first to complain if he didn't care as much as a fan or ask the hard questions a fan would, I think he does both.

He’s very selective who he asks the “hard questions” to. The toughest question he asked Ralph was “how are you”.

He waffles too much, all his questions start with a load of waffle which he manages to insert his opinion into
