I know his missus pretty well. Wouldn’t surprise me if he ended up at Spurs at some point.

A real shame that he’s ended up like this, should have been our LB this World Cup, but even when with us we had concerns about his lifestyle and fitness.

When he was here and before he could drive, we were training twice a day under Poch. He would get dropped off at home in-between sessions, order a dominoes, sleep and then get a taxi back to training. Pretty much every day!

His diet was horrendous and doesn't seem to be much better there.

Shaw has the talent and ability to be one of the best backs in the league, sadly he doesn’t seem to be the sharpest tool in the box. Such a waste of talent.

He was also a bit of a tit by all accounts, chasing other peoples mrs’ whilst he was here

That might be the issue - he needs to get back on the pizzas as was good then.

Seriously though baffling how a professional sportsman can’t keep in shape.

Even with this sort of lifestyle reputation, people will still queue up to buy him for the next 5 years probably on the basis that each manager will think they can be the one to change his attitude....so if he continues this way he'll probably still end up on ridiculous contracts without ever (potentially) being a consistent performer.

Confirmation that Jose Fonte has agreed to join Lille subject to a medical.

https://www.losc.fr/actualites-foot-lille/jos%C3%A9-fonte-un-mondialiste-et-champion-d%E2%80%99europe-portugais-arrive-au-losc

The LOSC is pleased to announce the conclusion of an agreement with the Portuguese international José Fonte who will join the Lille club under a 2-year contract. The 34-year-old central defender, European Champion 2016 and holder of his national team at the Russian World Cup, will make a definite commitment to LOSC until 2020 following the medical tests carried out in the coming days.

At least he'll be able to commute on the Eurostar from his London base and stay close to his family.

Easily. Expect he can comfortably retire now if he wanted to.

Four Everton players training away from first-team

Everton have reportedly told four of their first-team stars to train alone.

The Times report that Ashley Williams, Kevin Mirallas, Cuco Martina and Nikola Vlasic have all been told that their futures do not lie at Goodison Park.

Marco Silva has made the decision just one week ahead of the new season, as he still looks to bring in further reinforcements after Lucas Digne and Richardson’s arrivals.

We need a backup right back. He's a specialist emergency right back. It could work as beautifully again...

Wasn't considered good enough to be kept on at the end of his last contract, and subsequently been poor for Everton. Why would we now consider him good enough now? We've 2 academy graduates who can do a job there - Targett last night showed he could swap sides if necessary, and Reed did a job there for Norwich last season. Neither are proven, but worth taking a chance on. We'll just let Koeman pick up Cuco when he next gets a club job.

Listening to Chris Sutton saying that they should be into the main rounds without having to play the early games lol

I can understand that. I realise leagues are weighted depending on the perceived competiveness or size but Celtic won their league and are champions meanwhile the team that comes third in the PL just walks straight in. If it really is a "champions" league it should contain the teams that won their respective leagues and cup trophies rather than teams that came second and third.

Well wouldnt any of the Prem teams then be in it if we had to play Ross County, Kilmarnock and all that fodder x4 a season?

if its weighted on competitiveness they should be made to play qualifier to qualify for the qualifier :-)

Listening to Rodgers this morning saying I have the best job in football...too bleeding right you do.

I think the same , if you are the champion of the highest league in your country you should be straight into the main round let those who finished second and third in the so called bigger leagues do the qualifying imo!

I think you are being confused by the "Champions League " label.

UEFA are moving towards the model where qualification is based on TV ratings, not actual league position. It would have been interesting to see what fudge they would have come up with if Real Madrids slump had continued last season.

The problem is that you then get a load of crap qualifying, like the Champions from Slovenia, Malta and Montenegro. The group stages would end up just being a pointless walkover with 2 big teams and 2 minnows.

It would also encourage reckless spending in a lot of the smaller leagues. You would get some Slovenian village teams throwing ridiculous, unsustainable wages at players because the money for being in the group stage would render all domestic finances completely meaningless. One team would succeed, the rest would go bankrupt over the summer. It would be a disaster.

So make it two tiers instead of Europa have champions league one and two but make it the winners of the cups and the league you finish third in your league tough titties

How is that different? Europa is just ‘Champions League Tier 2’ with a different name.

Also you’re saying you would rather see matches between Vojvodina and Flora Tallinn than last years finalists, because they happened to win their domestic leagues?

Yes, I would rather Liverpool didn't get to the Champions League final, and if that means watching Vojvodina instead, so be it!

I don't give a crap who plays the final in less saints are in it and as you pointed out those teams are never going to reach the final anyway. The champions league is just another way of ensuring the rich get richer an exclusive club for already rich clubs. Keeping out the winners of the smaller leagues is just another way to ensure they don't have to share the wealth. Might as well call it the elite league rather than the Champions league. I'd much rather they ran like the old days as a cup competition rather than a league. League winners and cup winners from every league in UEFA knockout rounds and if little old Caernarfon Town some how knock out Barcelona in round three ... fine by me

if the champions of the minor leagues (celtic for example) were any good, they would get into the groups, no problem

Well that's why I'm so glad Celtic didn't get through, they already are so wealthy compared to the others they crush year on year.

My point is why should they have to fight for a place in a "Champions" league while a side who won nothing but came third in a major league walk straight in?

what difference does it make?

Real Madrid will beat Malmo. The likes of Malmo now have a better chance of actually getting to the groups

The Champions league is name only, man teams who have finished 2nd or3rd have won the thing. Point is that they have come from stronger competiton in the first place. Its like putting San Marino in the World Cup finals as they are in the World

Tadic getting AJAX through to next round his assists and goals will be missed this year

Was certainly worth more than 10m why on earth did we not arrange a swap for one of their players if he had a promise he could leave this year

Holland was a relatively good hunting ground for us with Tadic and Pelle, only Clasie failed to live up to his promise.
