Tesco insists it remains committed to Fratton supermarket, despite cutting store numbers across the county. #Pompey http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/news/business/local-business/tesco-assurance-on-fratton-store-plan-1-6509136

in a letter to Lib Dem Ben Dowling, one of the Milton representatives on Portsmouth City Council, Tesco’s south east corporate affairs manager Jack Pearson said: ‘As you will have read in the media, our performance as a business has fallen significantly short of where we would want it to be. As a result the financial resources we have available for new investment are severely constrained and we have had to critically review all current and future investment decisions.

‘Our absolute imperative has to be to protect the future of our business for the c.300,000 colleagues we employ in communities all over the UK. In recent weeks we have had to face up to some very tough decisions which affect many hard-working people. We don’t do that lightly and so it is with a heavy heart that we are announcing today that we are unable to proceed with 49 new planned store developments across the country.

‘I am conscious that you may see this news and be concerned about the future of our plans in Portsmouth. However, I would like to reassure you that it remains our intention to open our planned store. We continue to believe that the store would provide a valued service to the local community and we know that many people are keenly anticipating the opening. We are looking forward to bringing new jobs and investment to Portsmouth, and providing local customers with the best we have to offer.’

Careful wording there from Tesco..... "intention"...."believe"...."would"..... not as definitive as they could have worded it. Anyway, I assume this is all immaterial as Robinson has already handed over the cash to Pompey ("it's ring-fenced for stadium development innit guv, not for splashing out on Matt Tubbs on anyfink like that"), so one assumes that wasn't conditional on the building work going ahead....

If, as suspected, the cash for not objecting during the planning process has already been handed over, then let's hope the Tesco build does go ahead and effectively landlocks their dilipidated little carbuncle for good.

Have to feel a little for the local shopkeepers for whom such a development would likely spell the end of their businesses, though.

Pompey remind me of when I used to play Football Manager (and Champ Manager before that)

Quite often you get carried away, pay too much on wages and before you know it, you're struggling to stay afloat because you're nowhere near as good as you thought you were.

But don't worry, we can just start a new game!

Might mean that the club could use some of its massive cash reserves to buy the land back and finally deliver the much needed expansion of Fratton Park.

There'll be plenty of room, why they could throw in an underwater casino to boot. With facilities like that they'd be able to attract top talent, how long can it be before the rumors are confirmed and Maradona joins them as Manager?

I know a lot of fans fall for the big club sh!te, and it's understandable when said clubs are still in the top league and are, y'know, ACTUALLY BIG... but I can't believe any player with half an ounce of intelligence thinks that a club now languishing in Division 4 can be considered big in anything other than incompetence and self-importance.

Sounds like they're made for each other.

tbf -they don't. The players has just signed for the club which offered him most money and the longest contract. In exchange he'll say what the PR people tell him to.

Yeah, I know, although I didn't realise they had the Iraqi Minister of Information working for them now.

Has he filled in a template yet?

Sleeping giant, massive potential, only place he wanted to go, get back where they belong, fantastic fans that deserve success, honest bunch of lads, no mystery about the ripping up of the contract, on the up, biggest club outside the Premier League, great facilities, fortress fratton, other team's cup final, he and his Wimbledon colleagues were petrified to play in the bearpit, lifting the troops, no cashflow problems at all, in a much better position than Bournemouth, it's not about the money or the contract that is twice the length that anyone else offers at that level, rallying cry, promotion warchest, looking forward to playing alongside David Connolly, the lads are right behind the gaffer, whoever it is, looking forward to firing the plucky blues to glory.

http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/sport/pompey/pompey-complete-tubbs-swoop-1-6509712

The in-demand 30-year-old this morning met his new team-mates and is now in the reckoning for Saturday’s trip to Newport County.

Andy Awford faced stiff competition for the services of the 15-goal striker following a prolific loan spell with AFC Wimbledon.

But the Blues were always at the front of the queue and remained confident throughout of pulling off a deal for Mudeford-based Tubbs.

Can someone explain to me under what circumstances a club (Bournemouth in this case) would cancel the contract of a player who was "in-demand", "prolific" and attracting "stiff competition" for his signature? Surely there was opportunity to recoup some of the £800,000 they shelled out for him?

Conspiracy theories aside, I still don't get it....

Oh, absolutely. As funny as it would be in the short term if Tesco did decide that they didn't want to be located next to that **** heap, in the long term it's much, much worse for them to be totally locked into that tiny site.

Striker explains why he chose Pompey

There were other offers, but this place appealed to me massively"

Matt Tubbs

He scored against Pompey on Boxing Day.

But that trip to Fratton Park meant Matt Tubbs did not have to think twice about which side to join in January.

The striker was then on loan from Bournemouth with AFC Wimbledon, where he netted 15 goals in the first half of the season.

However, Andy Awford moved quickly to snap up the 30-year-old when he left his parent club a few days ago.

And Tubbs is looking forward to making his Blues bow in this weekend’s League Two clash with Newport.

He said: “I played here on Boxing Day and there were 17,500 inside the ground – this place is massive.

“It’s a fantastic club, we’ve got a new training ground and I knew a few of the lads already from previous clubs.

“There were other offers, but this place appealed to me massively and I can’t wait to get started.

“I’m glad that the move didn’t drag out over the whole of January. I wanted to get it done as soon as possible.

“I’ve had my first training session with the manager and his coaching staff and it was high-intensity, which is what you want as a player.

“There’s a lot of healthy competition for places here which means you can’t afford to take your foot off the gas.

“But I’m confident in my ability and I can already see that the lads here are going to create a lot of chances for me.

“I’ve always said that sometimes things won’t go your way, but there’s no excuse to not work hard.

“If I give 100 per cent in every game then I can create my own luck and hopefully score a lot of goals for Pompey.”

Tubbs has joined a side sitting 15th in the table, but believes he can help improve that position.

He said: “I’ve not come here to be part of a mid-table League Two squad.

“The calibre of this squad is great and there’s no reason why we can’t push towards the play-offs.”

In summary: :lol::mcinnes::lol:

Heehee: from the Snooze comments: "The Wimbledon fans are not very happy on their site. They also mostly seem to hate Pompey and now Tubbs. Firstly they harboured hopes that he would stay with them so they are disappointed he has left. They are also unhappy that he didn't celebrate his goal against us, proving to them he was always coming here & not them. Now a few of them want to check our finances because they believe we have broke the bank to get him. They are criticising the way the debt has been paid out and they want us relegated. They are scoffing at the comment from Tubbs about not wanting to go to a middle of the table team because they think we are in a relegation fight. I think they may be a tad envious."

I suspect not...

I'm not sure they've released any books since Storrie's great fictional fantasy trilogy Our Accounts, The value of our Squad, and Return to the Harbourdome.

Though his big hit comedy farce Are You Avin a Larf Mush? is still doing good business in the West End with Bobby Davro playing a manager obsessed with prostitutes, Sue Pollard as Buttons and Orville as the evil QC representing HMRC.

There's something for all the family - Spit the Dog makes a guest appearance as a a right wing extremist woman in a sailor outfit, Vanessa Feltz plays the local MP.

I think the main claim, and the main word was *LEGACY* Debt Free, so not exactly debt free

The PFA have still got 3 charges on the club so, by my powers of deduction, they must still be owed money. If that's not a "legacy debt" I don't know what is....

Next annual accounts are due to be published on 31/3/2015 (according to Companies House) but will only cover up to 30/6/2014 (I believe)

#AFCB striker Matt Tubbs has his contract at Cherries terminated by mutual consent - he's now free to join #pompey

Given there were multiple clubs reportedly trying to sign him, why would Bournemouth cancel his contract instead of selling him to the highest bidder? Surely demand was higher than supply in this case and as such Bournemouth could have recouped some of the £800,000 they forked out for him 3 years ago?

It's a good job I'm not a conspiracy theorist otherwise I might be inclined to be intrigued as to why they have made this as easy as possible for Pompey to sign him....

Pompey are not allowed to pay a fee & I doubt any of the others could either. But they could offer a big enough wage to persuade Tubbs to forego what he might have been contractually due from B'mouth, allowing him to leave 'by mutual consent'.

This feels like last throw of the dice time (again).

I doubt Tubbs would be owed anything much by Bournemouth - maybe the odd loyalty bonus or whatever, but that wouldn't amount to a great deal, and certainly not as much as a transfer fee. And surely one of the other clubs trying to sign him must have been offering Bournemouth a fee?

Of course, if Bournemouth were simply looking to release him on a free to get an additional squad place and trim their wage bill a little, the whole thing makes more sense - and it's probably safe to say that Pompey were the highest bidder in terms of contract and salary. Same old same old it seems.

They've come up with this great new idea to get rid of loads of their bloated squad members, and splash a bit of cash to bring in a small number of good quality players to propel them up the leagues. They call it quality over quantity.

They have also evolved, from skates into goldfish.
