Dr Who? Posted 12 September, 2010 Share Posted 12 September, 2010 He has my 100% backing. He is now the Southampton manager. To get off to a good start would be fantastic and a platform to buils on. Even though he could not possibily be judge on the result on Wednesday, but a new manager normally gets off to a winning start. It would just be a great start with 3 points and imagine the lift that would give, and if we do not look back from that...... We could be back on track in no time. But saying the above, if we are not in the top 6 come at the end of the season i really do fear for the bloke, as AP worked wonders with the team last season and we have a better set of players and are in a better position than this time last season! Top 2 for me is a must this season, no excuses, or the 5 year plan we hear so much about is out of the window!
St Landrew Posted 12 September, 2010 Share Posted 12 September, 2010 I wish these questions weren't even put on the forum. The ink is hardly dry on the contract and the question has the effect of getting the skids out, and dusting them down. Just don't go there. Support the bloke without condition until he proves he's clueless or the manager for us. If he's made of the right stuff, then onto glory. Blimey, that sounds good..! doddisalegend Posted 12 September, 2010 Share Posted 12 September, 2010 I don't think he will get as much time as he probably should, the expectation levels are sky high this year. We get talk of five year plans and champions league from the club, favorites tags from the press and bookies and no excuses anything less than promotion is failure speeches from the fanbase. This year was supposed to be our year, and if he doesn't deliver or even look like he's not delivering the St Mary's faithful will give him short shrift rightly or wrongly. Last year with everything that went on a lot of people were ready to cut the manager some slack and most felt we did well given our circumstances this year people just aren't going to be as forgiving. Lets hope Nigel gets off to a flyer for his and our sakes.
Topcat Posted 12 September, 2010 Share Posted 12 September, 2010 Cortese may only give him 12 games to get us into position as promotion challengers. If we fail to go up this season he will be fired.
Thedelldays Posted 12 September, 2010 Share Posted 12 September, 2010 I think 10 games is fair lol (that magical number) Ok.. Maybe see if we are within 10 points from the top come Xmas would be doing a decent job IMO
CB Fry Posted 12 September, 2010 Share Posted 12 September, 2010 He's got to get promoted this season, without fail. That is what the management want, and it is still what most sane fans expect. So spare the arse-aching bore-a-thon about Lawrie Mac and Alex Ferguson and all that guff balls. We know, we've all heard that patronising garbage for eons. Adkins will not and should not get the mythical "three years" for him to "build a team" and before anyone can dare judge him and kids these days are so impatient blah blah etc etc. Yawwwwn. He's got this season to get promoted. If he fails he will probably be sacked. It's a shorter timescale than I would normally call acceptable (I would give him this and then a full season) but that is what I think would happen. Maybe see if we are within 10 points from the top come Xmas would be doing a decent job IMO Being as we are 8 points off the top now, and many will still expect a top two finish at the end of the season, I'd suggest being a further 2 points adrift come Xmas would suggest he would have done an average job. The current squad is massively underperforming in terms of potential, and short of a couple ofloans to bolster the squad it needs few additions. His main role will be to quickly address fitness levels and get a de-motivated bunch of players playing to their potential. If we're not within a few points of th leaders come Xmas I'll be disappointed, there are no stand out teams in the division this year, for Bournemouth to be in third place currently tells you all you need to know about the level of competition we face and how abject our start has been. Pilchards Posted 12 September, 2010 Share Posted 12 September, 2010 I think we should let him settle this season so anything from relegation is a good result for us. Pat from Poole Posted 12 September, 2010 Share Posted 12 September, 2010 The reality is that Cortese will have somebody in his mind who he would want to take over at any point, so he could sack Adkins pretty much any time. It matters not one jot what the fans think. He's pretty ruthless and won't muck about, he will be desperate for his mega-millions bonus for getting Saints to the Prem. S-Clarke Posted 12 September, 2010 Share Posted 12 September, 2010 I sincerely hope you are right, but with heavy duty credentials you would expect someone to be moving up rather then down. So Fonte isn't championship quality then? you can apply the same logic to that. He's dropped down a division because he see's the challenge, i doubt he'd join another club at this level if asked - maybe Wednesday but that's all. He's dropped down because he's taken scunny as far as he can - we're lucky he's chosen us IMO.

There were people calling for Pardews head after about 3 games if I remember correctly. Getting back to the OP, I am sure he will get some criticism as soon as the team doesn' play well and win well, or if his post-match comments are not perfect. I reckon he will start to get a fair bit after 3 games if it is not a great start. Some people like to moan and will look for anythign to moan about. He's got a tough job: build a team to get out of L1 (that's not so difficult), a new team to get out of the Championship, a third team to stay in the Premiership. Or maybe Cortese has plans for a different man for th last bit. (And Cortese will give him until Christmas)
Professor Posted 13 September, 2010 Share Posted 13 September, 2010 I'm expecting us to lose on Wednesday as I just cannot see what Adkins can do in 3 days to turn things around so quickly. If we win, I will expect to see him walking across the Itchen. Since it is Pardew's squad that Adkins has inherited I'd give him all of this season and up to Christmas next year to get into the top two of the Division. If the team performances do not improve over the next few weeks, I can see him off-loading and recruiting in January, but if he works some magic and gets them playing, maybe with a couple of astute loanees, then he may very quickly lay the grounds for a long stint as Saints manager, which is something we desparately need. I'm just the opposite, now he is in place with 2 or 3 days to meet the squad I expect to see an instant impact. Footballers are a notoriously sensitive bunch, seemingly incapable of individual thought, and need a strong leader in place to get them to perform. Our current team, despite being out of sorts, is still a force which should be too strong for this league. And MK haven't exactly got off to a heady start themselves. I can see us putting in a very strong performance as the players will need to impress the new boss. And if we do that and Adkins can make 2 or 3 decent loan signings to bolster the squad in the areas we all know about (another CM, RM, CF backup for Lambert) then he will have gone a massive way to getting our pormotion hunt back on track.
