Gemmel Posted 31 January, 2011 Share Posted 31 January, 2011 For those of us that have grown up, watching our best players leave, there wouldn't be many that would have put money on Oxo and Lallana still being with us this evening. In many cases selling our best players was out of necessity and part of being a Saints fan, but to have secured Lallana and kept the big four away from Oxo, shouldn't be underestimated. It's massive and completely alien to me, especially when you think what was paid for the entire club and the option to realise 10 million of that in one hit. Absolutely made up, as should every Saints be. This is a new dawn and a huge huge huge statement of intent. Congratualtions to everyone at the club that have made this happen. benjii Posted 31 January, 2011 Share Posted 31 January, 2011 Agree. I was thinking the other day, "what if we don't go up"? Well, even if you take out the "definite leavers" we could put out a starting 11 with a spine like this: ---------------------BB----------------------- DB/FR--------AM-----------DS-------------DH/RD ???----------DH------------RC-------------??? --------------Guly------Barnard------------------- The "definite leavers" IMO would be Lallana, MS and Oxo. We'd be looking at a monumental League One set of deals worth something like £15m. If Fonte or Lambert left too it could be more. That set of players above is still very good for League One and coupled with the huge war chest we would have we would still be amongst the favourites for auto. Retaining the likes of Lallana and Oxo without being bent over is a brilliant result. The future looks bright, however you look at it.
Colinjb Posted 31 January, 2011 Share Posted 31 January, 2011 Could the trust finally be returning? I fear that it may just be an extension to AOC's time here, if he continues to progress and we don't go up he will be gone in the summer. You cannot fault Cortese though, he was absolutely true to his word. Finally a chairman you can trust.

We didn't sign a "marquee" FFS!!! (For the purposes of this particular gripe "marquee" means a football luminary like Craig Mackail-Smith, Charlie Austin, Adam Le Fondre, not three players from the division above and a Brazillian from a Serie A team)

CanadaSaint Posted 31 January, 2011 Share Posted 31 January, 2011 I agree with you Gemmel. Considering how this window could have looked, Cortese has just put a hell of a lot of money where his mouth is. He said that a cornerstone of his five year plan involved developing and keeping younger talent, and now he's doing it. That's quite stunning when you think about the money he's turned down in order to stay true to his word, but I doubt that the "talk is cheap" merchants on here will give him any credit for it. Saint Garrett Posted 31 January, 2011 Share Posted 31 January, 2011 Superb post...cannot believe some people arent impressed by this months transfer dealings. People have been crying out for pace, and we've signed 2 quick players, we've got rid of someone who clearly didnt want to be here and a trouble maker, and permanent transfers to 2 players who are key to our team, plus keeping hold of the rest of our squad, where quite a few of them are far too good to be playing at this level....VERY happy ! dubai_phil Posted 1 February, 2011 Share Posted 1 February, 2011 Keeping AL & AOC grab the attention, but the really interesting "Statement of Intent" was our ability to turn down an offer from a PL team for a youngster who hardly plays and who many on here assumed we didn't really rate - Aaron Martin. Clearly the management have seen something in him that bodes well in the NPC, and yet a young lad unable to get a game in L1 isn't flogged off at the first time of asking. It could be argued that keeping AL & AOC is actually a financial decision, both are likely to continue to learn and improve during the rest of this season, and with promotion they will have added significantly to the asset value of the football club. Also AOC has gone from "Youth Team" to 10 mil in 6 months, so with another 4 months of football could add another 6mil to hi value. All of that simple speculation is wiped away by the fact we kept a potentially promising 21 year old, that shows it was startegy not financial. Wes Tender Posted 1 February, 2011 Share Posted 1 February, 2011 The longer term strategy I'm sure, is to develop our youth so that they naturally gravitate up to the first team, so that we have a conveyor belt of home grown talent available, instead of having to buy in expensive players from elsewhere. These developments since the arrival of Liebherr and Cortese are a reassuring step in that direction. By proving that we don't have to sell the players we want to keep and furthermore having players who wish to stay here regardless of these head-turning offers until later down the line, we are sending out a signal to all the talented youngsters that this is the best place to develop your talents as a good career move. Because we were not in this comfortable position financially before, we had to let go the talents of such as Bridge, Surman, Best, Walcott, McGoldrick, Kenwyn-Jones, etc. Some of these players have found that instead of illuminating the Premiership with their skills, they are instead just reserve players or bench-warmers. So talented youngsters like AOC and Lallana, freed from pressure on the club to sell them, are reasoning that a couple of extra years playing first team football even at this level is the better option, as their value would probably be higher afterwards rather than as a little fish in a big pond. It all bodes very well for the future too, that if we gain promotion this year, there will be additional incentives for players to either stay or join us, on the basis that we could be in the Premiership the following year. JackFrost Posted 1 February, 2011 Share Posted 1 February, 2011 I haven't agreed with Cortese 100% but have always been quietly satisfied with how he's done so far. To be fair to them, I think Newcastle have had lots of reminders of being a smaller fish in recent years, and Liverpool's trading was pretty good, gaining two good strikers and shipping our someone who hasn't really had his mind on the job at hand. Thankfully, we have managed to hold off the "big fish", despite a concerted campaign in the media to talk players like Chamberlain out the door and into the Emirates. Quite disgraceful big club propaganda dressed up as journalism.

Puncheon is still our player; he is only on loan to Blackpool until the end of the season. Will be interesting to see whether he plays well enough for them so that they want to buy him at the end of the season. Either way, it was good business by Cortese, as if they want to keep him, so will Millwall want to sign him, so we have competition to push up his price.
