Was this the best goal ever scored by Saints?

Yes there were lots of great goals at the Dell in that era but the best one I remember is the David Burnside Equaliser in 1963 v Nottm Forest in the 6th Round of the Cup.

The Dell was absolutely full in fact we were heading for the Milton Road End but it was so crowded we ended up under the East Stand 3 0 down with 12 mins to go and we ended up 3 3 and thrashed them 5 0 at Tottenham in the second replay apart from 1976 the best match I ever saw

Undoubtedly the best Saints goal I have ever seen.

Some of Matty's were phenomenal, but this pips them all due to the build up, first time touches and flicks etc.

what always strikes me about that goal is that the touches, flicks etc were when each player was being hassled, harried and closed down by a team which were probably the best in Europe at the time. it's not like they were showboating against a poorer team or a team standing off them and letting them play, every touch, every header, flick, pass etc is played which being pressurised. Am amazing goal.

I left school (St Marys College) early that day and queued outside the ground for 3 hours. Got into the chocolate boxes for the match. Saw every game in that cup run, WHL 2nd replay was real special, Dellhurst like with the support we had.

One of the best goals I've ever seen was by Nick Holmes at the Dell in the League cup (?) first leg against Watford (?) their keeper cleared the ball and Holmes hit hit back, on the volley from around the half way line, straight into the back of the net, we won 4-0 I think (although we lost the second leg 7-1 with Shilton in goal). This is how I remember it but years (and years of alcohol) have probably played havoc with the little grey cells.

Probably the best goal I've ever seen scored was Don Roper hitting a volley from just inside his own half. It was hit so hard it flashed under the diving goalkeeper, hit the metal stanchion holding up the net and rebounded back out under the still airborne goalkeeper.

There was an Ivan Golac goal that I have vague memories of, it was a shot from a bit of a distance out that just stayed a couple of feet in the air from foot to goal, that is as much as my memory can muster. Anyone else remember this?

Edit: I just found it!

I was in the west stand also all the other matches. I left SMC in 1960, 2 yrs in 1st XI football. Fell out with Bro Joseph as I wanted to play Sat afternoons for Cowes and pick up some pocket money.

Spot on, except I don't think Shilton was in goal. It was the Keegan era and he missed the second leg.

I didn't see the goal but I remember listening to Solent fading in and out from a hill in northern France and the commentator went bonkers.

I think so...

I think the point is that was probably the greatest team goal ever. There are goals where an individual does something spectacular (MLT several times) but this was a goal worked by the majority of the team, working from the back, with great first touches and movement. One of the most impressive aspects was David Armstrong's involvement and movement from box to box. In the end Micky had what could almost be described as a tap in.

Close, but no cigar :D. That pair of matches was in 1978 I think, a couple of years pre-Keegan. I was at the first leg game, and Nick Holmes' goal was astonishing. Surpassed though, especially in terms of its context, by the one he scored against Liverpool at the Dell in the 1982-3 season. Danny Wallace's first against Liverpool the following season was superb too - brilliant move, amazing finish.

That was a fantastic goal. Always made me smile when some young fellow called Beckham did similar v Wimbledon, the commentators were ejaculating wildly over it then and since: to my mind Nick Holmes strike was better.

In the game that opened this thread that goal was sublime, Liverpool were chasing the ball around like kids in the playground at lunchtime and not getting a sniff, you would have thought that we were the kings of football at the time.

Strangely though one of my favourite goals for sheer ferocity in recent times was Chris Baird lighting an absolute smoker from outside the box just as it looked like we had made a right pickle of a free kick, the whole stadium was groaning as Bale looked to be playing in Surman, who seemed to fluff it only for Baird to come onto it like a steam train and BANG!

I think you owe SM of D an apology. It was 1980. Keegan played in the home leg. Got injured the following Saturday and missed the debacle at Watford.

If you think about it we cant have lost in the 2nd round in 78 as we went to the final that season.

I've seen some breathtaking goals in the 40+ years I've been going...and Le Tiss' screamer against the Arse in the last league match at the Dell takes some beating for pure fitting beauty...but that one was incredible. I was fortunate to be there to witness it, that was a fantastic side beating (and running rings round) one of the best teams around and to have been on TV means we can enjoy it forever. Gerald Sinstadt's commentary of that goal has lived with me ever since.

Le Tiss-esque!

Boyer was a hell of a player.

He was and he almost qualifies as one of our un-sung heroes.

Those who never saw him play have never really heard or seen much of him, which is a shame.

Always remember those three hatricks he scored at The Dell back in the 79/80 season.

That is certainly the best team goal I've seen.

What a great team that season, every time I watch that goal something new amazes me, notice Armstrong's contribution.Firstly taking the ball in front of his own defence, then appearing in their penalty area for the header back to KK.

(Best individual goal is probably MLT's first v Newcastle 1994/5 in my view).

Phil Boyer was indeed an unsung hero for much of his career,as he spent it in the shadow of Ted McDougall's goalscoring at Bournemouth and Norwich before they arrived at Saints.

In 1979/80 though he was unstoppable at home, although didn't score away until January.

Great potential forward line of him and KK was expected, but it never materialised,as Channon and even a rejuvenated Charlie George for a few weeks seemed to keep him out of the side.

You're quite right - I was thinking of it being before I was at university, not during that time. Must have been before I went back for my second year then, as I know I was in Bishopstoke at the time. So yes, humble apologies to SM of D. My only real memory of the first leg was Holmes' wonder goal, and I was lucky enough not to attend the second. A friend phoned me and told me the score that evening; I told him to eff off as I thought he was winding me up!

3min25secs. Class with an arse. 8)

If you watch the angle at 4:00 you can clearly see it's a headed Sol Campbell own goal and Delgado doesn't even touch it. I'd thought for the last 8 years or so that he'd punched it in, and even on first look it looks like it hits his hip - but the low angle behind the corner of the goal shows Campbell's head ducks in front of him and there's no deflection after it.

So if we're counting best own goals, my money's on John Arne Riise's one.
