Saint Garrett Posted 19 May, 2011 Share Posted 19 May, 2011 Not sure how you could say it was unlucky. Yes injuries, late goals etc etc. But that came from bad management and lack of fitness by our players IMO.

Having read that my attitude towards that family has softened slightly, but not towards the 'Man in charge.' Unlike his father Jamie hasn't air brushed Southampton out of his history. Its surprising how many times in either his newspaper articles or on Sky he actually mentions us. After reading that I forgive him for that bloody awful Thomas Cook advert......almost !! Legod Third Coming Posted 19 May, 2011 Share Posted 19 May, 2011 I'll never forget Arry's first game. 2-0 up with five minutes to go and then we capitulate thanks to that ridiculous Higginbotham own goal - he didn't need to be anywhere near the ball... typified our problem. Total lack of professionalism. That 2-1 against Everton wasn't unlucky, it was unprofessional. Crouch had the ball. He takes it into the corner and we win 2-1 simple... God I hate thinking about that season!!!

Lazlo78 Posted 19 May, 2011 Share Posted 19 May, 2011 There was always evidence that Harry Redknapp lied to either the fans of SFC or the fans of PFC (or both ;-)). After the relegation he told the Saints fans that he felt he had to make it right again and therefore he would try to take us up to the PrL again. But after leaving, he told the PFC fans that there wasn't a day where he didn't regret leaving them for SFC. So which was it? I always felt that Harry actually did like it at SFC and meant to clean up things when he stayed after the relegation - bringing in his son as a player hinted as much. However, as things worked out and he found himself back at PFC he had to tell the fans something to forgive him. In short: I think he was more into the SFC job than he is willing to admit now... Crab Lungs Posted 19 May, 2011 Share Posted 19 May, 2011 Due to so many marginal incidents (late goals in abundance), we were relegated. A goal or two swing either way and we'd have been comfortably above the relegation places that season and Harry wouldn't be as vilified as he is on here. I too believe he did like us but was probably not allowed to "manage" in his own style because of Lowe (rightly or wrongly, morally, I'd say rightly so). However, I think if RL had cut him just a little more slack then we might have had 1-2 more players that'd have helped. Ah well, never mind! Graffito Posted 19 May, 2011 Share Posted 19 May, 2011 Nice sentiments and all but he confirms my recollection that clearly he was crocked yet his dad continued to play him in preference to Matt Oakley, along with similar strange decisions like not playing Phillips in the Man Utd game. tpbury Posted 19 May, 2011 Share Posted 19 May, 2011 Interesting. Difficult to not tar him with the same brush as his [*lots of swearing*]pot father. But, I'll take JR's word for it. Not the bit about the tea lady though - does any club have a genuine tea lady now(or then) a days? How many players drink tea? I remember an interview with HR on Football Focus and it sucked all the wind out of my sails - if I was a player I wouldn' have bothered turning up for the match - I think a few didn't. What an annoying person. On another note - do they still have a communal bath? I imagine they've grown up using showers at the gym, training ground, or else walked home in the pouring rain with muddy knees after another thrashing. That'll learn them
John Boy Saint Posted 19 May, 2011 Share Posted 19 May, 2011 Shows that everything in life is not chocolate covered, glittering career, playing for England, being a Spice Boy at Liverpool. But the one defining memory in his career was to suffer relegation with us and it hurt more than his knee injury that ultimately, if memory serves me well from the time, could have left him disabled permanently! I always remember at the end of the warm up early in his short spell with us, him running from the corner flag in the Chapel Kingsland corner to the tunnel, and commenting to the chap next to me that it was the fastest we had seen any of our players run across the pitch all season: and that he was crocked too! Saint Fan CaM Posted 20 May, 2011 Share Posted 20 May, 2011 Fair play to him, however just watch and see how many journo's start to suddenly get cosy to Saints again in the coming months. They know the club is on the march upwards and more and more will want to be our friends when there's potential hospitality on offer! I would wager there are a considerable number of various parties watching Saints progress with quite some interest in the knowledge that money can be made from a very successful team. Turkish Posted 20 May, 2011 Share Posted 20 May, 2011 Before his injuries Jamie Redknapp was a class player. Anyone remember how he came on at half time against Scotland in Euro '96, totally changed the game and was the best player on the pitch only to break his ankle? His touch, passing and vision were superb and but for his injuries would have become a top international player. IMO, before his injuries, he was a better footballer than Beckham. I always felt he gave his all for us and enjoyed being here, but i also remember him or his dad saying at the time that he couldn't train and his knee swelled up in between games. Got a lot of time for the bloke as he also seems like a good guy, my only issue with him is why he feels the need to wear spray on suit trousers every sunday afternoon. DT Posted 20 May, 2011 Share Posted 20 May, 2011 Good piece, respect to Jamie R. But the real reason we got relegated was because Lowe wouldn't let Redknapp senior wave his cheque book wand, which is still his form of management and why the meeja likes him so much. And why he'd be a disaster at England level, in my opinion. Still have nightmares about bloody Peter Crouch not just kicking it into touch and how awful Higginbotham was for us in those days. I agree. Jamie R. gave his all while at the club and 'Arry was on a hiding to nothing with Lowe releasing nothing in the way of cheque book support. From memory, Ricardo Fuller at 90k was about the only purchase sanctioned by Lowe. I understand the negativity towards Redknapp snr, but really he didn't have a chance at the time. AndyNorthernSaints Posted 20 May, 2011 Share Posted 20 May, 2011 If i was a Pompey fan and wanted to relegate Saints that season this would have been my plan. I'd slag off players and drop club captin Dodd who is too experienced from previous relegation fights. I'd constantly tell the media the dressing room is down and out and there is nothing i can do even though Saints finished bottom when they were outside the relgation zone when he arrived. I would play Rory Delap at right back. Sign the non marking/defending left back/midfielder Olivier Bernard. I'd get Calum Davenport in on loan and play him alonside Jacobsoen(spelling). I would play Van Damme and Kenwynne Jones as wing backs in a vital away game at Birmingham. I would play some swedish winger Neilson wearing white boots. I would not feature Anders or Fernandes in games - too successfull/creative in Strachan/Sturrocks time. I would drop Kevin Phillips for the must win last game against Manure and play Ormerod for first game in a while. I would get Kevin Bond to work on the defence to ensure Saints conceded from so many set peices and late goals. I would ensure the fitness regime previously in place under Strachan was neglected so the team were unfit and likely to concede late goals. I would inspire Saints to lose the last game against a Manure side who didn't care and were there for ataking in an uninspired feeble effort to ensure Saints finished bottom and were relagated without a fight. Lord Duckhunter Posted 20 May, 2011 Share Posted 20 May, 2011 Redknapp Snr has always been the same and still is. Look at the way he undermined Darren Bent, with his goals they may have made Champions League this season. He seems to want to slag players and freeze them out to convince the Chairman he needs to spend big. It was a disgrace that we went down that season, as WBA were utter shiete. Whoever had the crazy idea that Redknapp could work for Lowe and then alongside Woodward must need their head testing.
Blandford saint Posted 20 May, 2011 Share Posted 20 May, 2011 Agree he was not fit most of the time. Which is why his father shouldn't have played him for 90 minutes in most games. Any logical person would have played him and Matt Oakley in fits and bursts, so when Oakley was fully recovered from his cruciate injury he could have resumed his regular place in midfield. I won't forgive REdknapp for the way he treated old stalwarts of our relegation battles like Doddsy and Oakley - it really seemed like he wanted us to go down, then and it still defies logic, some of the decisions he made. Still, it eventually got rid of Lowe, that was the only silver lining. Still don't want to be reminded of that season too often.

Yep, whatever JR says in print about us (and he likes to appear the good guy- helps him to keep all his various tv jobs), I'd really like to know what we paid in "bonus payments, or signing on fees" to have a crocked player who played a couple of decent games at first , then increasingly slowed up and avoided tackles -- just what you need when fighting relegation. 100%Red&White Posted 20 May, 2011 Share Posted 20 May, 2011 Don't forget, Jamie Redknapp was born and bought up about 20 miles from Southampton, he may well have had mates who were Saints fans and may have had a soft spot for us. He's certainly never slagged us off and I believe he was committed while at SMS. Whether his dad was...........? I do remember him saying the noise inside St Mary's for (I believe) the Norwich match was as loud as at any game he'd ever played in. No axe to grind with him as far as I'm concerned.
