Liebherr’s Southamptonshareholding diluted

Katharina Liebherr no longer owns a 20 per cent shareholding in Southampton, reports Dan Sheldon.

She inherited the club from her father, Markus, after he died of a heart attack in August 2010 and maintained full ownership until selling an 80 per cent stake to Chinese businessman Gao Jisheng in 2017.

And when Sport Republic bought the club at the beginning of the year, it did not include Liebherr’s 20 per cent.

However, following the group’s investment over the summer, when it injected millions of pounds into the club, her shares have been diluted.

Though the exact stake has not been disclosed, it means Liebherr no longer owns 20 per cent of Southampton and her shareholding has decreased.

Due to the increased capital put into Southampton by Sport Republic, her shares — even though they no longer total 20 per cent — remain at the same value.

This would suggest the money injected for the summer transfers was done via issuing ans purchasing more shares in the company rather than as a debt to the company. It’s a good move from the finances of the club.

I don't understand? Isn't the proceeds of issuing more shares a rights issue, wouldn't we have heard about that? I genuinely don't understand, I'm not not picking.

Anything to do with this and/or this?

(links to Companies House docs filed in September for share activity in August)

(updated links so should work now)

So how much % of the club does she now own? It’s decreased from 20% with this summer’s investment in the team but to what? Is there a minimum stake she will hold or does another window of investment buy her out fully? All a bit vague and leaving me with more questions!

Depends how many new shares were issued. The last accounts state there are 501,000 £1 shares, so KL would have 20% of these but without knowing how many new shares were issued you can’t work out what her stack is.

"Minority shareholder Katharina Liebherr has been reappointed to the Saints board as a director. Replaces her representative Rolf Bogli, who has been on board since Sport Republic's takeover and is a long-term collaborator with Liebherr." (Alfie House)

She's like the proverbial fart in a spacesuit...

‘long term collaborator…’ first time I’ve heard it called that!

Hmmm not keen on her, no interest in the club beyond her dads wishes and probably just wants a piece of the pie if (and it's a big if) we achieve premier League status again hopefully she takes a back seat and isn't involved in any operational decisions!

You realise her stake is the same whether she's actively involved or not right? Her "piece of the pie" will be there regardless.

I’d argue it’s reassuring.

She won’t let someone tarnish her fathers legacy, or certainly what he saved and helped build.

Her principles certainly served us well when she decided to sell up to "devout Buddhist" Gao. I wonder if he became a bit more devout after he escaped the death penalty by throwing his associates under the bus in that bribery case.

That aside, I think it's overall probably a good thing to have the Liebherr family maintain a presence on the board, although I wonder why she's chosen to dispense with the services of Mr Bogli at this point.

Why do people have to be so abusive and so disgusting about her weight? No one ever said similar about Markus. She's not done anything to warrant the reactions from some on social media. Hopefully her or the people connected to her never read things like that.

Yes realise that, meant she is only becoming more involved/visable at the club as there is the potential of a premier League return and her share will rise in value!

How's that different to 23/24 season?

Not sure that’s the case. She was photographed at Pompey in January for what was a game she might have chosen to avoid (in their primitive surroundings). This at a time when premier league return was far from likely.

You could say the timing of her visible return coincided with an upturn in our fortunes. Perhaps purely coincidental.

Yes, far better it’s left to proper experts like Rasmus to see us relegated again.

With my conspiracy hat on, I wonder if this could be one of the first, seemingly innocuous, steps in an upcoming ownership change? Maybe this Rolf fella ("Katharina's right hand man") is starting to pull together a takeover consortium (on behalf of Katharina) hence needing to step down to avoid a conflict of interest, or some such...?

One would assume Dragan's wealth generating capabilities have taken a hit following his ousting from the company he founded (United Group)...???... Which could / would impact his ability to continue to fund a football club, especially one on the cusp of a potential return to the premier league...?

Probably a load of nonsense from yours truly, for a change, but it's in my DNA to ponder such things...! :)

(That said, I've been on this forum long enough, and through several takeovers, to know that it's often the small, seemingly inconsequential activities, that end up being a clue to something bigger on the horizon... Anyone for a chilled Remi Martin...? #helpmerhonda ;) )

Strange that Kat should be demonised ,  if Saints dropped in my lap I wouldn't have a clue what to do with it 😄.

I'd scream in pain shouting "Get this football ground off of my legs! I'm being crushed!"
