England Squad for Euro 2016

Is Wheelchair fit enough to go?

If he played for anyone other than Arsenal, he'd have no chance what so ever.

Barkley is also just as baffling. All he seems to do in a game is turn with the ball, get fouled, fall over, win a free kick, loss the ball - repeat.

Every tournament we get the same load of people saying how uninterested and boring it all is. Seriously if you don't care then just ignore it all. The vast majority of English football fans do care about the England football team.

Highly questionable .......!

Highly questionable .......!

Nah just a bunch of loud mouths who think it's trendy to bash the England team. Every Englishman I know who follows football and isn't on a messageboard tends to follow their club team first but always supports England in the tournaments and wants them to do well. Thankfully I haven't met any offline football fan for whom world cups and euros are an irrelevance. Slag off the under performance, the team selection and the manager sure but actively wanting your national team to fail is just bizarre.

Have you done a survey?

I don't think you need to, the viewing figures speak for themselves at major tournaments. For some (mostly top Premier League club) fans, it's a bit like the Europa League - full of disdain until your team starts doing well.

Of course most English football fans care about their national team.

Why wouldn't you?

Apathy mainly.

I'd support England a lot more if I thought I was watching the best England team possible but I'm not. Instead all we get is the same big names from the same big clubs, shoe-horned into positions and formations which don't suit them, by managers who are too scared to drop them.

If there's one situation which sums up England for me it's Calum Chambers. Had a solid yet unspectacular season at Saints, nobody was talking about him playing for England. Then he signs for Arsenal, plays two games and bang! Straight in the squad.

It's the same every tournament. We have Wilshere and Henderson in the squad instead of Drinkwater. Sterling instead of Townsend, Rashford instead of Defoe. To top it all, we've got Wayne sodding Rooney. Will he be on the bench this summer? Like feck he will, he'll be putting in average uninspired performances in as a holding midfielder or left winger, whilst the media fawn over him being our top scorer of all time (against Belarus and Montenegro).

I just can't get in any way excited about a team with such blatantly obvious flaws, which I know will under-perform.

We have all on here been supporting a obviously flawed team that habitualy underperformed for much of lives. You support your team regardless of its shortcomings - that is what being a proper fan is all about is it not?

I will openly confess to not being a 'proper' England fan. Given choice, I would prefer them to win any given game or tournament but that's about as far as it goes.

If this was as good as England could hope to achieve then I would be happy enough but it isn't. England's record in major tournaments would be pretty good for a country like Ukraine or Paraguay but not for the supposed biggest, richest league in the world.

Not a fan of Spurs, but for me Dier, Alli and Kane all have to start. There's potential for a decent first 11 in the squad. I just fear we will end up playing someone decent in the quarters and reverting back to using the likes of Henderson and Milner to try and play for penalties. And then lose.

That's fine that you have a problem with how the team are chosen but that doesn't mean you don't support then or actively want them to lose. I agree if some other players were chosen that I would be more excited but I still want then to win every tournament they enter. Why would you not?

To be fair, Drinkwater was garbage against Australia. Henderson is just garbage. I wouldn't take either of them.

This .

Wilshire is head and shoulders above either , if fit . I presume Woy has a top medical team advising him and thinks he is . Tough to be left out after you've playerd well all season and someone who hasn't played comes in , but the squad is picked on who is the best option in May '16 not whose had the best season . It's not an nfl all star game .

I've been thinking it would be interesting to have a European tournament and the teams (12 maybe?) are made up of players playing in the Nation's leagues. So there would be a PL team, an Ligue 1 team, a la liga team etc etc.

Would be interesting to see who would win. But you have to have at least 1 player from each team in the 23 man squad. Tough to pick the PL squad.

Every time there is a tournament squad selected there is a furore about numbers 21, 22 & 23.

In reality they are irrelevant and won't play just like Drinkwater wouldn't have played.

The only reason Drinkwater might have played would be after injury. Given the risky players Hodgson has selected in Wilshere and Henderson, I think it's relevant to consider whether a high-performing alternative who's played the whole season might have been better.

Wembley attendances are low because friendlies and qualifying tournaments are dull as dish water and Wembley is mostly overpriced. As someone else has said, look at the television viewing figures for major tournaments and the endless discussions online and through other media channels. It's a national obsession.

What England need to do perhaps to reignite disinterest is move the friendly games away from Wembley.

With its agreement with Spurs to play CL games there next season, and probably League games the season after, surely they can do afford to do that?

Leicester. West Ham. Saints. Newcastle. Villa. Could all fill the grounds.

Because England FC have priors. The public aren't wanting England to fail, they are just sick and tired of seeing them fail to the point where the apathetic rot has set in as a defensive measure.

Sounds like a challenge to me! Reckon this would take some beating:

Aguero

Ozil Payet Mahrez

Kante Schneiderlin

Rose Van Dijk Alderweireld Clyne

Courtois

Lukaku, Vardy

Townsend, Arnautovic, Redmond

Fletcher, Kirchhoff

Daniels, Williams, Dann, Richards

Gomes

Don't really see why there is such an outcry over Wilshere and Henderson specifically. Both been part of the squad for a while now, Wilshere bailed England out single handily at one stage in the qualification. Drinkwater has just come into the squad, he was always going to be vulnerable. I think he should have been picked by the way but can see why he isn't.

The idea of picking the squad based on form is quite funny. You build a squad for 2 years only to throw it all out of the window because of someone having a good few months just before the tournament. If England are to do anything in the tournament the best players will need to perform. Thats Jack Wilshere at his, that's why you take him.

I'm as critical as you are of the idea that selection should be based on form alone - forming a cohesive squad which can play together takes time and can't be chopped and changed too much.

But it's fitness that worries me with Wilshere and Henderson. As a squad member, Drinkwater is reliable where those two aren't. We've only got one reliable defensive midfielder at the tournament in Dier.

I quite like the idea, not the least because (in theory) the PL should boss it. Almost worthy of it's own thread. Here is mine..

Vardy

De Bruyne Payet Shaqiri

Guera Alli

Monreal Van Dijk Cahill Clyne

De Gea

Can't be ar$ed with rest of squad.

Seriously though, how could any manager not utilise the Kane/Alli partnership? Hopefully he will, but I have my doubts.

If we are going for that, where does Rooney play? Wide left?! I'd like Rooney's experience on the bench. I don't know what we do with all the strikers though. One up front then it's Kane, 2 then it's Kane and Vardy. Pace off the bench, Sturridge or Rashford.

Ashford seems a waste of a spot really. 4 strikers ahead of him, might get sub time out wide. After his goal the other night I thought he looked really raw, overran the ball, some poor touches. Not his fault, he's a kid and learning, should be developing in the U21s not rushed to failure. The tournament is in a couple of weeks, not a couple of years. If he wanted five strikers, Defoe was in great form and far more likely to grab a goal.

bIf Rashford had broken through and scored a few goals for Stoke or Palace, would he be anywhere near the squad?[/quote]/b

Schneiderlin called into the final France squad after Lassana Diarra is forced to withdraw with a knee injury.

One extra ex-Saint to watch, one less ex-Skate to watch. Fair deal.

Come to think of it, does that leave ANY ex-Skates left playing in the Euros? (I'm assuming a current one isn't in, like, Albania's third goalkeeper or something...) I've glanced through the squads and I can't immediately see any ex-Skate representative at the tournament...

WILSHERE IS NOT A DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER

WILSHERE IS NOT A DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER

WILSHERE IS NOT A DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER

WILSHERE IS NOT A DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER

WILSHERE IS NOT A DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER

He also wouldn't be in the first 11 at Arsenal even if he was fit. Him playing as a defensive mid is a clear example of shoehorning. As, I may say, is people wanting to play Vardy and Kane up front. That isn't our system, and we haven't looked good when we have tried it, have we? (Remind me if we have!) Play one or the other.

Also, Rooney, while clearly not as good as he was, is still obviously worth a place in the squad. 19 goals in all competitions, 8 in the league, with 6 assists, playing mostly in midfield in a dysfunctional overly defensive team.

I would play Alli and Dier together in central midfield. Alli has looked great there for Spurs (there is an article in 442 or somewhere arguing it is his best position IIRC) and he can still make runs forward to link up with Kane, but also see the game in front of him, and keep possession (something we find hard!)

So I would play

Forster

Clyne Smalling Cahill Bertrand

Dier Alli

Sterling Rooney Lallana

Kane

But I wish we had another specialist defensive mid player for games where we are going to be under the cosh.

As this thread shows it seems that the manager is in a near impossible situation here.

Whatever squad he picks you can GUARANTEE that some fans will disagree with this or that selection as their personal favourites either miss the cut or players they happen to dislike for some reason are included. If Roy rates Jack Wilshire so very highly then he is perfectly entitled to pick him - if that doesn't work out then he will surely answer for that decision later.

For me the manager has assembled a reasonable squad here and England fans should concentrate their efforts on looking forward to watching some good football - I hope.

Yet Drinkwater was motm against Holland. If we discarded a player every time they had a bad game there wouldn't be any left!

Although I think to say Drinkwater was garbage against Australia is a bit harsh, first half I thought he was decent, hardly ever gave the ball away, which can't be said of Wilshere. He was also being played somewhere on the left of midfield which is hardly his best position - much better to have tried him alongside Dier.

This. I want an England manager to pick a squad based on who has performed well for England, who fits his system, who does well in training for him, things like that. Give a chance in friendlies to players in good form to see if they fit those criteria. Drinkwater looked completely out of his depth against Australia. Maybe he'll come good for England in the future, but a major tournament is not the place for practice. Rashford, on the other hand, seemed to slot right in.

I can't for the life of me work out why Roy persists with Henderson, who's never played well for England. Maybe he contributes something around the squad? But that would be my only quibble and I think he's way down the list for a starting place. There are other players who I don't think are good enough for the England squad (Barkley, Stones, Lallana) but I can't think of the better English players to replace them with, particularly in defence.

Midfield: Alli, Barkley, Dier, Henderson, Lallana, Milner, Sterling, Wilshere.

If one of the CB's get injured, Dier will deputise. Who then will deputise for Dier? Who will be the defensive midfielders? It certainly won't be Alli, Lallana, Sterling or Wilshere. So that leaves Barkley, Henderson and Milner. Henderson is coming back from a fairly serious injury. Milner generally plays further up as does Barkley. Drinkwater might have been a better defensive midfield option in case Dier needed to move into the back line.

Tbh if the England manager showed some guts and actually turned around and told the players what he expects from them and actually sticks to his word by dropping players who aren't performing you would find a lot less criticism.

Instead of which you see the same players picked time and again despite the fact they they don't put in a performance at the competitions we want to see England win. I know I'm very negative about the national side, there's a reason for it - im tired of seeing the team underperform and I believe that drastic action is required to shake things up.

Tbh I'm actually a little surprised Hodgson has picked more youth but I am also very disappointed that he has picked players who have consistently failed as well

No, he looked out of position. The idea that you can be man of the match against the Netherlands, be one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and then be 'completely out of your depth' against Australia is preposterous. Presumably Sterling also looked out of his depth because he was dreadful?

Got to agree with this. The style of football around the world has changed at an International level the same with the Prem but our International team are playing to old style. I get sick and tired of watching hoof ball which once hoofed comes straight back.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a single mention of Bertrand as a LCB option. I thought he was solid for us in that position, disciplined and did a good defensive job, played enough games in the position for it not to be a fluke.

Roy would never do it, but the best way to retain our attacking threat and shore up our defensive issue is to play with 5 at the back, 2 higher playing attacking fullbacks and 3 defensive minded CB's. We maximise attacking play by lowering the pressure on the attacking fullbacks but when we need to we can plug the holes we currently have. Against the better teams we can play more defensively with Milner and the fullbacks playing deeper. On counter attacks we have overlaps or crossing options. I think something like a 5-1-3-1 would be effective working with what we have.

--------------Hart-----------------

----Stones, Cahill, Bertrand,----

Clyne ----------------------- Rose

--------------Milner---------------

-Rashford-----Alli------Sterling--

-------------- Kane----------------

Subs options: Kane for Vardy, Sterling for Lallana, Rashford for Barkley/Sturridge, Alli for Rooney, Milner for Dier. Smalling locked in a cupboard.

Yes I'm probably talking **** but Saints did well against big attacking teams this season with 5 at the back.
