Such a tragic mess, and a huge loss of prosperity. There is no longer any point in arguing that Brexit has any benefits.

"You will remember his claim that the subs paid to the EU only had to be redirected to the NHS to transform it into a world-envied health service. Strike one. What we actually have is a collapsing NHS. Another of their boasts was that the UK would “take back control” of its borders. Strike two. Unmanaged migration is not falling, but rising. The most critical promise was that the economy would roar like a liberated lion just as soon as the UK was “unshackled” from the “sclerotic” EU. Strike three. The UK is the sick man of the G7, the only member with an economy that is still smaller than it was before the pandemic. As for that fabled vista of fantastic exporting opportunities for “Global Britain”, businesses are writhing in all the red tape generated by Brexit while the UK has yet to secure a single better trade deal with a significant partner than we had as members of the EU.

Quitting has not been empowering, but enervating. Every credible study concludes that Brexit has introduced new impediments to prosperity while aggravating pre-existing problems. Our trade has had a feebler recovery from the Covid-induced global slump than comparable countries and the inflationary surge fuelled by the war in Ukraine is sharper on these shores than elsewhere. The self-harms inflicted by Brexit also include the suppression of investment and shortages of workers in key sectors. Nothing in the Brexit prospectus has survived contact with reality. Never has there been such a bonfire of vanities."

It's quite clear now why the BBC has been the PR firm for government instead of asking the difficult Brexit questions -  the BBC chairman was personal friends with the PM and arranging loans for him when the personal debts started to stack up.

Both parties forgot to mention this during the selection process.

How on Earth was Johnson in such a financial pickle in 2020 that he needed an £800K loan ?

One of the major arguments against re-joining, and one I have quoted, is the obligation for accession members of the EU to adopt the Euro. Interestingly, Hungary, Poland,Romania, Sweden, and the Czech Republic have no plans so to do, and Sweden joined in 1995. So perhaps that one can be put out in the long grass.

That obligation is easily fudged.

There's no polite way of putting it - the multiple abortions he had to finance plus the other paternity payments, the lavish lifestyle and the divorce all caught up with him in 2020.

Top bloke though, got all the big decisions right, played a blinder etc.

I'm not good at the linking thing, but found this monologue from Andrew Marr quite interesting vis Labour's position on post-Brexit trade with the EU.  It's the New Statesman so obviously left-leaning and therefore kind to Starmer.  Nevertheless it's the first thing I've seen/read that paints a hopeful yet realistic picture.

Yep, it’s going really well https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/feb/11/revealed-secret-cross-party-summit-held-to-confront-failings-of-brexit

Tim Martin printed 500000 beer mats promising cheaper food and drink after Brexit by ending ‘protectionist’ EU tariffs - just raised their prices by 7.5% instead. Another Brexiteer lie to go with an NHS in crisis, rising migrants and associated costs, reduced energy costs and non-association to the biggest science research programme in the world.

Rumours on the web about very, very expensive ladies of the night are abound. £500k for the  ex of a former Man Utd & Real Madrid player for instance. Allegedly.

Andrew Pierce, Mail hack/Tory employee on GMB this morning when asked by Rob Rinder to name 4 clear benefits of Brexit, says ‘Well, I’ll struggle”. But still thinks it was the right decision.

Fucking imbecile.

To be fair, he’s only had six and a half years to think of something.

Another Brexit success;

"A High Court judgement that regulations affecting more than 2.5m EU citizens living in the UK are unlawful will not be challenged by the government.

The Home Office has confirmed it will not appeal against the ruling, despite previously indicating it would do so."

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-64663795

"In December, Mr Justice Lane concluded that part of the European Union Settlement Scheme (EUSS) set up by the Home Office to settle EU citizens' immigration status was based on an incorrect interpretation of the withdrawal agreement between the UK and the EU."

So the Home Office didn't understand their own regulations.

With a legacy of ministers such as May, Patel and worst of all Braverman (Nick Griffin or Nigel Farage packaged as a Tory Brexiteer cabinet minister) who is honestly surprised by that?

If they are sorry for the Windrush scandal my backside is a fire engine.

Anyone been in their local supermarket today? How come shops across Europe are rammed with produce from areas which have allegedly experienced unprecedented weather. Even Northern Ireland has full shelves. Is Brexit the grift that keeps on giving?

Much as I’d love to blame it on Brexit - it’s destroyed supply chains in so many other ways - the reality is that the shortages are caused by very poor and unprecedented weather in Southern Spain and North Africa where the majority of the UK’s fresh fruit and veg which isn’t seasonal comes from. Should get better by the spring,

Yeah I’m not looking to Brexit as a cause but it’s possibly part of the picture. The thing I am conflicted about is why unprecedented weather isn’t impacting other parts of Europe in supermarkets.

UK supermarkets are complicit as they drive down the cost price paid to suppliers which makes the UK probably the most marginal of markets. Fine when there's plenty to go around because suppliers can fulfill contracts, but when the supply is disrupted for whatever reason the UK is the lowest priority market especially when European retailers are prepared to pay more for the same produce. Add to that the high costs of energy which has meant it is uneconomic to grow stuff under glass in northern Europe and the fact the UK is not part of a seamless trading area so is more difficult to access as a result and you have the perfect storm.

Not helped by having no direct sea route between Morocco and UK. One was to be set up between Tangier and Poole and operated by a company called United Seaways and heralded as a 'Brexit buster' route avoiding two sea crossings into and out of the EU and a road journey through Spain and France. It never happened even though Poole Harbour Commissioners announced that it had been set up. Turns out United Seaways really never existed beyond a Gibraltar based shell company. Real failing Graylingesque and you can bet your life one those dirty Tory supporting grifters is making money out it somehow.

Presumably that is a news piece from December 2020, given that the transition period was due to "end in four days" as per the commentary (and the ticker bar announces an emergency that was declared at Queen Elizabeth hospital that happened on 28th December 2020).

Glass Eels Limited (the company they are doing the piece on), certainly didn't fold as a result of the changes https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/02441662/filing-history

If anything, their balance sheet for the following year shows the company had a pretty similar financial position Published Balance Sheet

They've even got their own plane for transporting the eels (https://glasseel.com/ tail number is G-EELS)

Not sure your twitter feed is as up to date as you think it is, but still, good job you found an article that's over 2 years old to prove your point....

Absolute classic. Yeah, feel free to check out the G-EELS website:

https://g-eels.com/

"We are based at Gloucestershire Airport. During the winter months our aircraft was used to transport valuable live baby eels (glass eels) all over Europe for restocking and farming. Currently due to BREXIT restrictions we have had to pause our glass eel operation. Over the summer months our aircraft can be hired for a variety of other operations."

Of course Brexit has had zero impact on food supplies:

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/feb/22/therese-coffey-brings-farmers-union-plenty-of-chaff-and-no-wheat

Therese Coffey also said that farmers could have prevented the egg shortage by increasing their flocks; completely overlooking the deaths and culling due to avian flu, or the restrictions on moving birds and re-stocking imposed by her Department.

As has been said of her, "all praise the government of all the talentless. Or look at it this way. If Coffey can make it to the cabinet, how useless do the rest of the Tory MPs have to be not to make the cut? Let’s be honest, there’s no obvious sign of intelligent life in her. She’s at her most convincing when she’s at her most unconscious"

I assume you didn't bother to check out the link showing their balance sheet?

Borriersaint asked if anyone is going to help them out, but the finances say they don't need any help.

Question. Does NI not reside inside the EUs borders and is what you would call a member of the EUs single market?

also, are they not upset that the border is between the UK / NI?

So yes and yes. thanx.

No and no. Your game and wilful neglect of accepting reality and real world consequences of political games show your ignorance. You play keyboard games and pretend your infantile opinion has weight when families grieve. Shame on you.

You will laugh at this reply and come back with nonsense that is adjacent to the issue and rejoice in yourself. You have no feeling or understanding of the conflict in Northern Ireland and will therefore comeback with a pithy sentence that you believe will give you a gotcha moment.

You and people like you are not part of the conversation because you have nothing to contribute or add. You are a troll. I hope you find love and leave real grieving people alone.

My Grandmother was in Omagh when the bomb went off and lost a lot of people that day. Today brought a lot of that home. I’m hurting and the fact that nonentities like you think you can snigger about the effects that decisions made in England that affect my homeland says a lot.

Better Englishmen will understand this.

Walk away you infant.
