Of all our prized assets, Ramsdale was always the most likely to go with there being a WC next year. A £4m loan fee (£25m option to buy) is a decent return.

If we replace him with Matt Ryan on a free as has been suggested, then that makes great business sense. Hopefully we can now get a few other signings over the line before next weekend (AM and winger please).

Some good sales this summer which hopefully means that Fernandes, Dibling and THB are going nowhere (unless a silly offer comes in on deadline day)

Not convinced by Matt Ryan not commanding on crosses.  The championship is not league for him.

Height is his issue..  6ft

Good shot stopper , vocal and decent footwork.. but the physicality of the centre forwards won't suit his game.

Fernandes is going, get used to it. It's irrelevant how much other money we raise, he's not staying in the Championship.

The other two I'd still say 90% chance both are going as well.

Would much rather sign the Stoke keeper than Ryan.

100 percent with Bazunu going to the other way..

Saints should get this done . Tried and tested in this division. His shot stopping outweighs any of his other deficiencies.

Not a position to fuck about in

People losing their minds over a loan we basically all knew was coming

Ramsdale had an agreement that he could go if we were relegated, not sure any of the promoted teams interested him much, but we can’t deny him a move to Newcastle

4m fee with wages covered is a decent deal, if they buy him at the end of the year great… if they don’t we have a PL keeper returning

I can't help but think that it will make bringing a replacement in more difficult - I wonder what decent keeper is going to want to come here knowing that if all goes well in a seasons time they will lose their place to Ramsdale?

Which to me suggests the club are thinking Baz and McCarthy are good enough for the championship.

Valid point though elite footballers have to have a lot of self belief and confidence. If you have a good season with us this year then there is an option that Ramsdale doesn’t come back and you’re now potentially a premier league no1 or he comes back and you have the chance to push him for the shirt. Let’s say we sign Johansen (sp) and we have a Burnley type season - as Still do you stick with what has worked or do you immediately stick Ramsdale back in?

Small sample size from his half season at Lens, but he looks pretty good at stopping crosses to me

I'm the scenario where Still sticks with the new keeper it renders the loan completely pointless - from my perspective we should either keep or sell.

So either:

- we stick with Baz and McCarthy and hope that miraculously they've improved

- We get someone new and discard them in a year and have Ramsdale back - probably a waste of money

- We get someone new and Ramsdale ends up not being number 1 and we end up selling him

One way or another it just doesn't strike me as a good deal for us.

Guess we’ll find out based on who the 3rd keeper is. Personally I would go for a new number one with the aim of getting us promoted, who would then be number two next season if Ramsdale returned, Macca is out of contract next year so we would be back to 3keepers again

Looks like @woodsaint1 suggested Mat Ryan and has worked for Still successfully and lots of English experience at Brighton - gets my vote.

Get someone now.  If Ramsdale comes back we have 2 decent keepers and Bazunu as back-up with a year left on his contract.  AM out of contract so don’t renew.

Or we sell Ramsdale, and get another keeper in as the reserve, with Bazunu as back-up.

If we stick with Bazunu we won’t have to worry about Ramsdale coming back as we won’t be playing in the Premier League.

Have there actually been any credible links to Ryan or is it just people suggesting him due to the link to Still?

A few weeks ago and not the most reliable source https://saintsmarching.com/former-arsenal-goalkeeper-lined-up-to-replace-aaron-ramsdale-at-southampton

Apparently fell out with Potter at Brighton, kept them up under Hughton, very good core keeping skills but his flaw is short passing, everything goes long. But that’s not an issue next season, we need the opposite of Baz who does pass well but no core keeping skills. Went on loan at Arsenal.

Seems so obvious as a move to make that SR being contrary will probably recruit a keeper from the Slovenian second tier instead.

25 million option sorted for next summer supposedly. Although I think Ramsdale will have to improve for Newcastle not to be looking elsewhere in the meantime personally. But in theory that’s a guide for anyone else that fancies him next summer if he’s still up for sale.

They have the money to buy him now. Why not make them do just that? If they want him, they want him.

Forest bid £25m for McAtee. May be one less interested party in Fernandes. No doubt that's the kind of figure they will have been thinking they could get him for. My guess is we want north of £35m.

They don’t want him. They have stumbled upon him after being knocked back on their main target. I fully expect them to be finding someone else over the next year unless Ramsdale puts in ridiculous performances, which I’m not convinced he will.

He wasn't first choice, but they must want him.

If you are right though, they won't want him next summer. The option is pointless. If we don't get promoted teams will offer buttons for him knowing we need to offload.

Yes, it’s an option for if he does ridiculously well. We’ve been paid handsomely for the year, he gets his crack at a World Cup and Newcastle get a solid enough option for when Pope isn’t fit. That’s what loans are, convenient.

If we don’t get promoted then yes obviously we’ll need to raise money anyway, not sure what your point is there? If we do get promoted then the fee agreed is a guide for anyone who wants him or we get a keeper back everyone rates. Honestly think you’re finding a reason to be annoyed by it for the sake of it.

Probably, but it’s an obvious move now given the circumstances. Ryan isn’t perfect but for Championship he’s far better than Gavin or Alex, and has been managed by Still very recently.

Looking for positives, which is difficult when so many players are leaving, I am pleased that we seem to be doing a lot of player selling with a few weeks of the window left, i.e. leaving time to get replacements in before the season starts.

The next few weeks will be a big test of the new SR setup and their resolve to return to the Premiership.

Some of the areas that are now looking weak and where we need to strengthen are the goalkeeper, creative midfielder(s) and winger(s) (who can beat a man and can cross the ball).

I agree that club feel Baz and McCarthy are considered good enough to start season with. Whether that is correct t another matter.
I do think we will see an incoming goalie though and my hope it’s for a #1 challenger -not a third or second choice - but maybe the ££ wages and fee will determine that as much as anything.

I don't know why you'd think that. He'll still be a decent enough PL keeper with two years left on his contract. There'll be plenty of interest, not least from the three clubs who do get promoted, and no reason for us to accept buttons.

A shouty 'keeper, who actually makes saves and was part of a Still team before (which didn't concede many I believe)?

Seems like a good idea to me.

The GK Sunderland are about to buy (Roeffs) is one we had looked at as recently as the under 21 Euros in the summer. The club have a long standing interest in Patterson so them signing a new GK could make buying/loaning him more viable but he wouldn't be top of my list.

Other than Setford who I mentioned earlier, I know we've in the past scouted Matt Freese who plays for NYCFC in MLS and I think is the USNT number 1 GK at the moment.

No idea if Matt Ryan is someone on the list but it would make sense as a stop-gap for a year.

And they might think that if all else fails they will be adequate at least.

Makes you wonder why they didn't offer Lumley a new deal, as AR was likely to go, and Baz can likely be loaned out again if we do get a new first choice in , and JL is a perfectly good 3rd keeper  at this level.

Got to love Liverpool fans.

literally burned TAA shirts when he ran his contract down, to praise Isak for going on strike to force a move to Liverpool.

Given they are the people’s club who won’t overly spend compared to their rivals, they are sure spending this window

They did not offer Lumley a contract as we are in the Championship and they are happy two have the goalkeepers who took us promotion

I doubt Leicester and Ipswich will win so many games this year and there do not seem to be teams of the calibre of Leeds around

But only time will tell

Matt Ryan on a free as a back-up keeper has Saints written all over it.

If you look at his stats it suggests that's more or less what he's been  everywhere he has played.

He's 33 so a one year deal perhaps - or maybe 2 or 3 years and he replaces McCarthy as our veteran back-up keeper in the long term.

It does look like we will be starting the season with Bazunu as our number one.  I am hopeful that with a competent defence in front of him and not being forced to play out from the back all the time he will be better keeeper than he last time we were in the Championship.

Not concerned about that, concerned about ensuring Saints have a reliable goalkeeper option next season, which Ryan is far more likely to be.

I agree but Ryan ought to be first choice. That said, Bazunu v Wrexham seems likely and it’s up to him to show he’s improved 200% from his last outing. Having seen the Liege highlights very recently I very much doubt it but the club are determined to claw some of Gavin’s fee back even if it risks costs promotion.

Ryan is a good goalkeeper, certainly a straight upgrade on anything we have left after Bazunu.

Where is the link though? I've not seen anything in the media. If that's a goer then it's amazing news as the club powers that be have finally realised Bazunu isn't the one.

What you are really saying is that you hope he faces fewer shots so will let less goals in - a competent defence and not being forced to play out from the back does not make him a better 'keeper. He might have improved and we'll likely find out soon.

Long-term 2030 vision is for Stephens to step up as manager with Macca as his goalkeeping coach.

Great lads to have to have around the dressing room and they really love the club.

Supported by Smallbone as head of physical conditioning, and Stewart as physio.
