Interesting to see Man Uniteds Garnacho might be heading to Chelsea. He plays a similar position to Dibling, he's only 21 and has played more games. Prices quoted are anywhere between £35m to £50m.

That will set the price benchmark for Dibling.

Quite possible but Utd are literally bombing him out whereas we seem content to keep Dibling for another season if we don’t get a deal we are comfortable with. I would also guess Dibling’s contract demands might be lower than Garnacho so teams may be more willing to put more into an upfront transfer fee.

My guess is a 4-year deal.

Madness, why not see how he gets on in the early games first? An asset is only worth protecting long-term if it can succeed at the level your club or organisation wants/needs to be at.

Question marks over his attitude as well. Can understand his disappointment at being on the bench for the Europa Final but the way he expressed it was not professional or acceptable. As a manger, those individuals are toxin however talented.

Obviously pure speculation, but the new GK coach worked with Still at Reims and has huge experience, especially with young players - Spain U21 and their winning Olympic team in 2024. Still has already said 'Ruben knows his stuff' and clearly has faith in him, so it could be that he's said Baz can make it and they're going with that?

So a snippet i've heard is we are getting another RB in (on loan). Don't ask who because i don't know. Judge me if this turns out to be correct.

Another keeper coming in as competition. Although i would say we could all have guessed we would be getting in another keeper so i'm taking no credit for that snippet. All that was said is the keeper is not an automatic first choice but will provide real competition.

The keeper situation reminds me of what we did when we got promoted the first time and signed Boruc. Didn’t come in straight away as we gave Kelvin and Gazzaniga a fair shake but eventually Boruc became obvious choice. If it’s Matt Ryan that comes in then I suspect we will get a similar outcome.

Good point. Hard to know how much is him and how much is Amorim but it’s certainly enough to be a possible red flag for other clubs considering signing him. Napoli were linked heavily - Conte comes across as one of those my way or the high way types.

New RB would make sense if a starting player as we are ok numner wise but not convinced by either of them as a starter. Assume one would then go.

Contract wise Charles is a no brainer and can see the logic re Bazunu to preserve value. Decision to make similarly with Smallbone - we can't afford players worth something to leave for free, regardless of whether they are brilliant or just squad members.

Would it hurt to wait a month or two into the season before offering new contracts or would that be too late>

Charles has to not only shine in the championship, which he hasn't for us, but show that he can make the step up. It strikes me that Spors has probably made the decision on him and Baz just to stop them leaving for nothing, no matter how good they are.

That would be irresponsible.

you would only give him a lengthy contract to ward off interest from others (of which there has been none as far as I know) or to preserve his value and where again there is none at this level.

we are a dispiriting club at present. We continue to play poor players in an attempt to generate interest and sell them and if they actually manage to improve we sell them, meaning we never derive any benefit in footballing terms.

difficult to get behind that as a fan

I wonder if it could be Alfie Gilchrist based on the names we’ve been linked with.

Goalkeepers that have been mentioned recently in connection to us are Jonathan Sirois, Matt Freese and Tommy Setford.

seeing as you suggested Quarshie several days before anyone had heard his name before, my ears prick up every time I see a post like this, although Gilchrist struggled a little at Sheffield United - he got injured half way through the season and couldn't get back in the squad after that. Linked with Derby.

Freese is an interesting shout. Big lad at 6'3 and and US international. If Spors has watched Downs' play for US he will have seen Freese in that footage too.

Are Arsenal looking to loan Stetford out? Tommy Stetford's Dad, pro golfer Chris Steford is from Alton. His brother Charlie, who also plays in nets for Ajax, is a Saints fan...or at least thats what Wiki says.

I think he’d offer more than our current right backs. Chelsea have a glut of them. Although they have that in every position. Josh Acheampong seems more highly regarded by them presently. First team opportunities and contract status will be a factor.

The goalkeeper links to Freese and Setford were by another poster. Will try and find the post.

That experience can’t be ignored but training and u23 matches only replicates match day situations so far, although obviously important in preparation.

Let’s see how Gavin does in the first 3-4 games and if he’s free of major faults, claiming crosses well and making the saves he should be as well as the ones that are over and above a couple of times then as a fanbase we can start saying ‘you know, I think Gavin has developed and grown’.

I may have said this before but having had a chat with someone 'in the know' at SMS, the club are prepared to sell Dibling for the right price but really want to keep hold of Fernandes.
Of course this depends on Fernandes and his agent accepting this strategy.
It will be interesting to see if Fernandes plays tomorrow.

Just delaying the inevitable.  He isn’t good enough and the club are absolute mugs for making him number one.

Ask the fans how his loan went last season.  15 goals conceded in 8 games.
The club should be going all out for the Stoke keeper.

Yep. Dibling has one foot out the door but they're very relaxed with Fernandes. A lot of interest in him but nothing concrete with a many clubs put off by the price we want (£50m+ addons I believe). West Ham for example really like him but they're playing around with £30m odd for a new central midfielder so have no chance of getting him for that. His agent Mendes will keep whipping stuff up in the media throughout the window but at the end of the day, if nobody pays the price tag we've put on him them he'll stay. Gut says he will still go as I just can't see someone that talented in this division for long but we should just enjoy him for as long as we can whilst he's here.

Assuming that we don't go for an obvious / serious competition / replacement like Johansson, I hope that Matt Ryan signs on a free through the relationship with Still and Martinez.  34 next year but still reckon he would be our first choice keeper by mid September, once the management team get to experience matchday Gavin.

Surely we need a keeper who HAS made it,not one who CAN make it. To my mind there is a word that's missing from can make it and that is maybe.

Can we risk that?

Keep them both, smash the league, potentially keep dibling on promotion. Worst case we knock 15m-20m off the asking price for having 1 year left... Which is what we're rumoured to be spending on bang average players like fellows and rudoni.

They are both two of, if not the best players for their clubs, who are in the same division as us. Both fairly young too. Think both could be good signings for us, having performed very well at this level with the potential to step up.

Neither is better than what we have - which wasn't good enough to stay in the prem (or frankly even compete). Ergo, we're selling better players to buy worse ones, just to in all likelihood need to replace them next summer (if we get promoted).

Think Fernandes is the sort of player you could trust to put in a performance even if he is about to be sold.

Lol the project of a) training to play in some football matches, b) playing some football matches, and c) hopefully winning some football matches? No wonder the project has become such a decisive factor in modern transfer sagas...
