North- vs South-ampton - Tuesday 1945

Recommended Posts

Posted

It's our year to win this Cup. We start at our near namesake Northampton Town at Sixfields on Tuesday at 19.45hrs. I've never been to Northampton but I hear it's North of the Watford Gap, but not as far up as Yorkshire. And it has Shire named after it, which is more than we currently do. Maybe we can make Southamptonshire official to annoy the Skates. I do know my mate Jonno went there once and said their women were beautiful, but then he also said Lisa Riley is a 9 after she lost the weight so...

Anywho,  Northants play at Sixfields, named ironically for it's neighbouring single field, and they share it with a Rugby team because the owners want to get their money's worth. They have Sam Hoskins who formerly graced our academy and recently had a testimonial because League One players are skint.

That's my unresearched History lesson complete, on to the 100 per cent correct (this season) Picker Wheel...

So there you have it. To sum up, one field, skint footballers, supposedly fit women and we'll lose a 120 minute slog.

This feels a bit like our trip to Gillingham two years ago, not a fixture we particularly want with the squad in transition , unknown outgoings, would certainly expect at least 8 changes to starting XI and some u21s to feature.

I would hope that we can win this without risking all our best players. I think there are definitely some who need to build up their confidence, but the Ipswich game is massive, so I'd make a few changes.

I would go for:

                      McCarthy

Sugawara Edwards Wood Welington

Downes Sesay (if fit - why was he not even on the bench v Wrexham?)

        Armstrong Matsuki Fraser

                 Downs/Stewart

I don't see any alternative to Sugawara, we have loads of CBs, so let's give Ronnie another chance and Nathan Wood some minutes. I think Quarshie and Stephens are the two most likely to start against Ipswich and Manning should, too. Charles has to start at CDM in the league, so Downes and Sesay, or another young midfielder would be my choice for the cup. Fernandes off the bench again I reckon. I really want to see more of Matsuki, but we're lacking other decent options to play behind the striker. I'd protect Robinson (maybe have him on the bench) and don't really want BBD playing. I can't believe Still didn't play a big man up front against Wrexham, so play one of them in their best position and get the other one on at about 60 minutes.

I thought that odd too. Where are the goals going to come from this season? Can't rely on free kicks and corners/long throws all the time. We need a big man in the middle to challenge for crosses and someone (wee-man?) to run off them. But when they did come on, Downes and Archer were pretty ineffectual and only Stewart seemed to create some space, get in to the right position and receive the ball in a threatening area...so he'd be my choice.

I'm going and don't want to see our 'C' team in action. Really don't see the need to change Baz in goal but Still almost certainly will. If Edwards is going to be in central defence, he certainly needs more practice. Also like to see Matsuki in action. But I would rest F.Downes. He is going to be instrumental for us this year.

No extra time in league cup.

I'd much rather see an attempt to build a settled team. There's an international break at the end of this month and there's more value in trying to build team cohesion than there is in resting players at this point of the season.

Feels like the slowest transfer deals to ever happen.

The derby that every non-Saints kid once thought existed.

Understand the desire to settle a consistent starting 11 but I think it’s important to keep the subs bench sharp too. Would probably play something like

McCarthy

Taylor, Edwards, Stephens, Sanda, Sugawara

Smallbone, Charles

Edozie, BBD, Armstrong

(Positions may be slightly wrong)

Some guys like Sugawara, Edwards need extra conditioning if they’re gonna play for Ipswich. Others would be okay with a day off. Some players should play as an advertisement in a low stakes cup game eg Smallbone BBD. In that same vein, bring on the likes of ABK, Archer later in the game. Keep strong players on bench in case of emergency. Oh and keep some players like Stephens and Charles for a solid spine

Nah. No point picking up cards and potential injuries. It's a long season. Give everyone some match minutes.

An opportunity to give the squad minutes. Wellington may be injured as he was feeling his calf yesterday so need to protect our last two full backs.

McCarthy

Edwards Wood Sanda

Aribo   Matsuki   Sesay O'Brien Whitmarsh Fraser

Archer BBD

On the face of it pretty weak/inexperienced, but all of those players would be starters for Northampton, so they should be competitive.

What a terrible side

This is a whole 5 days before Ipswich.

I think it will serve the club better to play a full first team squad to aid the connections and team building.

I don't think Aribo is part of the squad anymore, he'll be off sonnish.

I thought the use of BBD yesterday was quite telling too. We threw everyone on the pitch at the end, even Ross Stewart, but he stayed on the bench. I'm sure the club are hoping for a bid to come in for him too. One of the worst attacking players I think we've ever had, almost certainly not suited to any form of high pressing football.

We hardly have any new signings. This lot have mostly been playing together for 2 years+.

According to Wiki Hampshire was known as Southamptonshire until as recently as 1959. That must have annoyed the skates.

The 'South' was added to Southampton quite recently.  Just after 962.

True. I'm looking forward to seeing if O'Brien and Whitmarsh can become a decent midfield pair.

If we don't take this seriously and default the game with a team that's just to fill the team sheet it will be another Grimsby put as many in and try to one up with a tactic to get ball in box with 2 taller players upfront. Its likely to be a U21 team though and usual excuses why cup games are not priority anymore.

I'm not suggesting playing the U18s. This is the team I proposed:

Macca

Edwards, Stephens, Wood

Suga, Downes, Sesay/Matsuki, Welly

----Armstrong-----BBD---------

------------Downs--------------

I just don't see the merit in playing a full XI.

Obvs, assuming fitness etc. Maybe Smallbone and Bree will be available.

Indeed. It’s always pleasing to know that Hampshire was named after Southampton, not the other way around.

https://www.hampshirelive.news/news/history/how-hampshire-name-referred-hants-4649162

Southampton: Northampton

Southamptonshire: Northamptonshire

Hants (or ‘South Hants’ as in the hospital): Northants

The ‘thampton derby. A proper derby! 😜

Yeah pretty desperate, probably be spanked by Northampton

My point about their individual ability I think is valid. A side languishing towards the bottom of L1  would probably be pleased with any one of those on loan.

There lies the paradox of a team game.

A stat that was brought up by the commentary team yesterday is that only 4 of yesterday's starting 11 played against Arsenal last match of 24/25.

One of those was Robinson.

It's a chance to get more understanding of the dynamic.

Strictly speaking the County was called Southampton until the Local Government Act of 1891, when it was given the name Hampshire, and the Isle of Wight was made a separate County. Rumours persist that due to some oversights the name was not fully changed until 1959. Of course in 1974 Bournemouth and Christchurch were ransferred to Dorset (hence why Bournemouth are/were represented in the Hampshire Cup). Official documents (such as for example birth, marriage and death certificates prior to 1891 (and often later) nearly always refer to the County of Southampton (sometimes, rarely as Southamptonshire).

Went there for our R2 FA cup tie in 2009 which we won 3-2. It’ll be a lot warmer next week than it was that November day.

Northampton is,  in fact, south of the Watford Gap but obviously north of Watford.

A shout out to my Local team, Brackley Town (aka The Saints and play in red/white stripes), who beat Eastleigh 1-0 in their first National League game since promotion.

You’ll not be needing your inoculations for the North -  Watford Gap is about 20 minutes north further up the M1.

As a native born and bred, I have never heard of Hampshire ever being referred to as the County of Southampton. It's been Hants on every address that I've lived at until we moved to the New Forest, when it became Hampshire.

My Dad and I were at the Brackley game supporting The Saints to that win against Eastleigh. Kelvin has a big job on his hands as Brackley were by far the better of the two sides. The afternoon was certainly made better by the news from St Mary’s.
