We won’t be signing Mubama as 3rd choice, I’m sure part of the proposal to City will be the demonstration of Stewart’s minutes last season.

My guess would be a new attacker who can play wide, or up front to come in if Archer & BBD leave.

Then Downs (if still here) or Oyenkule provide the back-up back-up back-up.

If Archer goes (as well as BBD) my faith in TE and JS will increase because he is ok but just not good enough for us

Leo, Larin, Dobbin, Mubama, Azaz, A.N.Other NEW ST, is a fresh looking bunch of forwards and quite exciting (potentially/possibly!!).

Let's hope the new names in the second part of your post don't get consigned to the first part..

Oops, yeah you're right - Arthur Dennis is a kid I went to primary school with 20 years ago!

Is Anthony Dennis any good? Seems like has something about him if the top Turkish teams are sniffing around.

So far the multi club model is all one way.

Based on what? He’s way past his best, he’s the last thing we need imo

I see [Anthony] Dennis' reported move to Coventry has fallen through. Would make a decent Shea replacement and you'd think a deal wouldn't be hard to do with Goztepe. It'd be nice to get some benefit from this multi club nonsense.

Not a bad shout. I'm one who thinks we don't really need a Shea replacement (Bragg is his replacement, leaving ~1,400 minutes for O'Brien-Whitmarsh, Williams, maybe Akachukwu and Sesay, and whoever else). But the cheaper option of a sweetheart deal from the sister club for Dennis to compete with Bragg for the third spot is interesting.

Dennis is in the last year of his contract, so that would need ironing out.

He'd definitely be more than adequate as Bragg's backup. Bit expensive for that role though, and there's no role ahead of Bragg available (unless we want to block the pathway for him and all the rest of our youth midfielders for some reason).

No, we need someone who can carry the ball and chip in with some goals.

Haven't really seen anything of him since he moved to West Ham so hard to say.  Chances are he'd probably be fine.
Only thing I would say is that if you had four midfielders of Downes, Bragg, Jander and JWP then the bulk of that lot seems to prefer more deep lying roles.  Jander likes to get forward and Downes does it pretty well at times but for the sake of balance, I think I'd prefer someone a bit more adventurous.  We were linked with Josh Mulligan earlier in the window and I wonder whether that's something we might try.  Fair bit of interest in him with Genoa the latest club to be linked so might not be feasible.

Alan Ball was well past his best when he joined us but helped the team massively to get to Div 1 in 1978

That said I do not think we need JWP but we need a decent striker not a young kid from Man City

Makes sense with Ross going to Swansea. I know people threw his name around randomly and there wasn't much to it, but looks like Hull might get a deal done

Spoke to son in law last night who obviously played with Mubama last season. "Very talented and will be a really good player". "Needed to mature a bit with us last season, he would want to start every game".

No. We need someone to replace what charles offered and that is not jwp, especially not the current version of him. Plus right now he's a massive financial headache for west ham, no one should be rushing to help them out of it.

Surely only the referee can do that?

Larin/Mubama
Scienza/Edozie - Azaz/Dobbin - Fellows/Matsuki

It’s really strong, with the assumption that Archer goes as well who is probably the only one who could contribute on top of the names above.

I’d like one more wide player on loan to push Fellows, which could easily happen at the end of the window. Dobbin could even be another option up front, forgot about that.

No need to panic about no other striker coming in.

Who are you playing in the likely event that either of the striker sustain an injury at any point this season?

Duncan,
How is Sam enjoying life in the Potteries?
Does he fancy the teams chances this season?
I had always hoped he could have made progress at SMS

Disagree tbh, England u21 number 9, played well for man city in preseason.

I’d argue he’s exactly the type of player we should be looking at.

Might look for a versatile forward who can play wide and up front I guess, if all three of those go out the door in the next 3 weeks. We only used Larin and Stewart up front last season though so wouldn't be surprised to see the same with Larin and Mubama

Probably Dobbin becomes the second option and plays with Azaz at the same time.

I didn’t realise Oyenkule had gone out on loan to be fair. I still think it’ll be a late Premier League loan for somebody who can play across the front three. Gnonto kind of player?

Tonda seemed to be talking up the opportunities for the youngsters this season. I know zip about who's coming through but is there anyone in that group who might be able to make the step up?

Wonder what happened to Baylee Dipepa. Seemed to get overshadowed by Oyekunle in the u21s but he was considered quite the coup when we picked him up.

Princewill Ehibhatiomhan is probably still knocking about too.

Good to hear he is keen, but Mubama would probably need to score more than one goal in seven games to be in Tonda’s starting eleven.

That's a terrible idea. No evidence Dobbin can play that role at all. We need a proper third option.

Pretty obvious really. He’s not going to come here to be third choice. He’ll be expecting to start so will share with Larin. Didn’t Dragon say we’d get someone to share the load with Azaz and then whoever would depend on whole left so this guy is Stewarts replacement. Cheap or loan to replace Charles and we’ll be done unless anyone leaves

That’s a little hyperbole. Half his senior career and his entire youth career was in that role.

You'd assume that would be Oyekunle but he's just gone on loan.

Tough sell though, isn't it? 'Want to come and play for us? We only play with one up front and you'll be third in line'

I was kind of hoping the role could go to a youngster who would be given opportunities to prove himself when he gets a chance (a bit like Bragg last year.)

Exactly. When you’re getting down to third choice striker it’s always going to be somewhat bit part. Very optimistic for people to think otherwise.

It'll be one of Archer, Downs or BBD. No way will we sign anyone to come in as 3rd choice.

Makes sense on paper. Third choice striker who gets 10-15 mins here and there and warms the bench if one of the first two options gets hurt. Archer and BBD are both capable of 5-10 goals a season based on their records at this level. Downs... not so sure but maybe he's the most receptive to playing third fiddle right now

Yeah I think it may well be Downs. I can't see anyone prepared to take him and his considerable -I assume for this division-wages for the season.

I still think we should keep Archer. He's been good in his recent appearances and offers us something different plus he can score goals. We'd likely only get peanuts if we sell him so he's one I think we should retain as a squad player.

There's no way we'll get rid of all three of BBD, Downs and Archer. Ideal scenario for me is that we punt BBD and Downs* and keep Archer.

Then the CF pecking / rotation order for the lone striker in a 4-2-3-1 goes: Larin as first choice, Mubama as his replacement off the bench or rotated, then Archer as the back-up reserve if one of them gets injured. Then if all else fails Dobbin or Azaz step in as 4th choice false nine, but that seems pretty unlikely.

Archer's not a world beater but he's about as good as you can reasonably expect to get for 3rd choice CF at Championship level. Also, if Mubama is another unit, Archer as an option preferring to play more off the shoulder does (in theory at least) let us mix it up a bit if plan A's not working. He proved last season he can do a job on the left as well if absolutely necessary, so all in all he's a decent lower level squad option.

For the sake of £3m or whatever they were asking for Archer, it seems a no brainer to keep him ahead of BBD or Downs who both look like they would contribute basically nothing in any position. Archer at least might do something

(*Easier said than done, obviously)

Normally a question of time before the right bid is accepted. A shame we can’t afford him with the Charles sale but reality seems to be a loan of a PL youngster.

How did Downs get on in the Eintracht Braunschweig friendly? He scored, so presumably he must have done something, even if it was against poor opposition. Can anyone who saw it say whether he looked like he'd actually improved at all?

Not convinced hes any better than McBurnie. I guess they're going for the ipswich approach of building a side good enough to go back up again in 2 years.

Have a feeling this will be the year the derby record is beaten (by either them, Cov or both)

AI (yeah, I know) has predicted them getting a respectable points tally. I'd say they would be happy with 24 points.
