I heard that Villa are just putting in fake bids to unsettle Saints, they're working in conjunction with the Boro Meedja machine.

Do clubs bid for players they have no intention of signing? I can see the idea by being widely linked to another player to force the hand of the club you really want to buy a player from, but actually bidding? Seems a stretch.

Maybe we will see a sudden gravity shift. After all nothing is guaranteed. You're the one talking bollocks mate. Why you've decided you have no idea if we will replace our centre back and best player I don't know. Can you name any time in recent history where we have failed to replace a player? Do you ignore the quotes from the club that sales will be replaced? Just a ridiculous thing to say. Watch when we do replace him you'll be saying something like "I never said he wouldn't be replaced I just said I didn't know if we would or not." I said you weren't stupid earlier but I'm beginning to have doubts.

Me talking bollocks, lol ,you are comparing gravity with foot ball transfers and if that`s not bollocks I don`t know what is. 🤣

We don't know, we hope/suspect he will be replaced and as i said there are no guarantee's unless i have missed that, feel free to show me if there is

I reckon in SOG`s absence you want to argue about something with someone, but I'm a tad bored now, enjoy the game tomorrow.

TBF he could have said something like "it is likely we will have to sell some players but we will do all we can to replace them with the best quality possible." I know that arguably he said a version of that but it was a fair bit more than that in my opinion.

He said what he had to in order to get the best money possible for the players we sell. If he’d said what you suggested it’d probably have knocked a couple of million off the Charles and potential THB fees. It was mooted by one of the local journalists, I forget who, that we’d need a net transfer surplus of around £50m to conform with PSR this year.

Stewart Replacement > Phil Harres

At 24 and 1.93m, Harres has the age profile missing from most traditional target men at this price. He scored 10 in 33 2. Bundesliga matches, added three assists and is valued around €2.2m by FotMob. More importantly for this particular brief, his aerial numbers are strong: another statistical source has him winning 2.57 aerial duels per 90, 81st percentile, and 63 aerial contests across the season.

Bellis Replacement > Christoph Klarer

This is possibly my favourite player across all three searches.

Klarer is 26, approximately 1.91m, currently at Birmingham and valued around €6–7m. In last season's Championship he started 43 matches. Most importantly, FotMob places him in the 98th percentile for aerial duels won among centre-backs.

FotMob +1

He also fits your distribution requirement unusually well. His current technical profile includes long-ball passing, while he is comfortable accumulating possession and touches rather than simply heading balls away.

Charles Replacement:

Jonathan Varane: outstanding fit

This is the clearest Shea Charles replacement I found.

Varane is 24 and 1.90m, plays defensive midfield for QPR and is physically excellent. In 2025/26 he recorded:

71 tackles, 32 interceptions, 132 recoveries, 155 duels won and 42 aerial duels won.

He won 60.8% of all duels and 70% of his aerial duels. FotMob ranks him around the 95th percentile for defensive contributions and 82–84th percentile aerially among midfielders.

FotMob +1

That is a proper screening midfielder.

If you're too dumb to understand what an analogy is and how dumb you sound saying that you don't know whether we will replace THB in the face of all evidence and without being able to name a single instance of when we have failed to replace a top player in a position that we will now be short in then you're beyond help. I rescind my earlier comment about you not being stupid.

He already said we would have to raise a significant amount of money. The only comment I considered unwise was the one about being as good or better than last year. He could have not said that and it wouldn't have meant we sold these players for less.

The fact that we haven't been able to shift Ramsdale, Bazunu, Downs, Sugawara & BBD is the real issue. That's at least £35m we should be up. Weakens our position to be able to reject reasonable bids for others. There is still a sizeable financial risk until we start cashing in on some of the unwanted squad members.

Charles, THB and anyone else who goes will be replaced. They got their Stewart replacement. This was all pretty clear from the start, don't get the meltdown.

I think you may have taken his interview a little bit too literally. He was hardly going to come out and say, "yeah we’ll probably have to sell two of our better players to balance out the wages vs. Income from not getting promoted." That unfortunately is the reality of the situation.

He said the opposite.  We’ll find out at the end of the window if he’s true to his word.
For me, I don’t think he’s a bullshitter.  I do think he makes a mistake or two though, just like we all do.

TBF he didn't say the opposite. He said we didn't have to sell but then essentially implied that THB and Charles would be sold and the rest might be sold if we got very big money for them.

We'll struggle to get £10m for those players combined, I'd say three or four of them will end up as loans. Their wages are the real, real issue, we simply cannot afford to have them on the wage bill come September.

You're right to a certain extent imo.  It was clear from what he said that we would sell THB and Charles.  But he also said this window wasn't about money and that we would end up with a team at least as good as last season.

Like I said, I don't think he was bullshitiing to sell season tickets but we'll find out by the end of the window.

Someone told me earlier that Bazunu and Sugawara are going to Celtic, so that's probably £6-7 million for Sugawara and £5 million for the pair.

Tonda, Presser...

  • We had 4 days to prepare for Stoke, we need to make sure we put points on the board
  • We play to win every single game. I don't want it to feel the same when we lose, it needs to hurt
  • Tomorrow is time to perform
  • We all know how important Taylor is, he was the best CBs in the league last season
  • We all know there has been interest, there was interest in January and he deals with it in a great way
  • If we go back to Jan before we went to Stoke, there was heavy interest in him and he was brilliant in that game
  • There is a level higher up regarding the business side of the club, I am involved in some of the conversations
  • My job is to train the players we have, and luckily we have great players
  • Casper is not available tomorrow, hopefully not too long. He hope he is available on week
  • Leo looks good
  • We have been in good conversation about a new CM, the timelines sometimes take a little longer
  • I have full trust in the board and management
  • I am not worried about other teams
  • This is a good league, probably the strongest 2nd division in Europe. There are just no easy games
  • We had 2 moments last week and we got punished
  • I don't look at the bigger picture of unbeaten run, we simply lost a game of football
  • We gave them goals and we never took our chances
  • There are 1 or 2 similarities how Watford and Stoke set up, we need to control transition moments
  • There will be more games at home where we control the ball more, not many teams have the quality we do
  • Cyle looks amazing, it is good to know we have the best striker in the league
  • He is full of confidence, feels home and has made huge progress since January
  • Divin is very hungry, very ambitious. He trains very well, and I am sure he will have a big impact tomorrow
  • The atmosphere starts with the team, we must perform tomorrow and I am sure the crowd will be behind us
  • There are no excuses tomorrow. We play to win
  • The aim is always automatic promotion and to win. 6 out of the next 9 league games are at home
  • Finn is not in contention to be involved, he will start tomorrow
  • I hear this a lot about certain team we dont play well, it doesn't mean anything to me
  • I have huge respect for Mark Robbins, he was very kind to me when we play at theirs
  • He is a great manager, but they do have injury issues, but they are a very good team
  • They do not concede many goals and it will be a big challenge.

Have you never heard of the infamous smokescreen that clubs employ? Bid for players they don’t want to put other clubs of the scent of the real targets. In the world of football this works every time as agents and clubs definitely do not speak to each other about players

Maybe Tonda just doesn't rate him. Has he played under him at all?

His last two league starts were the 4-0 loss against Middlesbrough in January and then he got hooked at half time in the next match against Hull with us 2-0 down. Played a single minute in the league since then against Oxford. Started against Leicester in the Cup after January and came on in the last minute against Arsenal.

But, yeah, I think his last two league starts and his lack of minutes since then shows he isn't thought of too highly, nor trusted.

Alternatively we are exchanging him for Larin, Peretz, Scienza, Jander and change which is excellent value!

That puts a far rosier and more favourable slant on it (glass half full) than I would give looking at the relative sums flowing between us and Villa over the last couple of seasons.

Scienza and Jander in my book had been funded by the sale of Fernandes.

But valid point you make, that the important thing re the sale - if it happens - is not the amount incoming but who it is reinvested on.

Indeed. I don't know why fans get hung up on a few million here or there. We won't see any of the money ourselves and the key as yo usay is how it is spent. I think in general we have managed to get more money than I expect dusnto get from many of our sales. Maybe we will sell Downs for 5 million or Sugawara or Archer for similar amounts. The key thing is ng now is two decent players for every position and everyone knowing their job and doing it to the best of their ability. Losing THB is a blow but it's been on the cards for a while if we are honest.

We owe Villa for Dobbin. Perhaps they have written what we owe into the THB fee. Helps us because we pay less to Man City and don't have anything else to pay for LD. Unlikely to be reported that way though as too complicated to put in a Tweet.

Interesting suggestion. If it is something like this wonder if anything outstanding from the Archer deal might also be absorbed into it.

Makes it a bit more palatable if we’re paying less (or zero !!!)  on those two. No idea if that can be written into the books though.
