The two you mentioned are chalk and cheese. VVD was a Rolls Royce of a player. That was evident from his first game, great defender who glided around the pitch with ease. Bella-K and Salisu were like cart horses, and even then best sent to the glue factory. Shame about ABK, obviously had potential. You don’t get in the Germany WC squad at 22 without having something about you. But equally Germany with the likes of ABK in their squad don’t get past the group stages. I think so - ABK and Salisu not even remotely similar, Salisu couldn’t control his feet but was a decent last ditch defender. ABK could glide past players, carry the ball up the pitch, and seemed a level above when he was on it. But it only lasted about 3 games unfortunately, which probably explains why he ended up with us.
LiberalCommunist Posted yesterday at 19:47 Posted yesterday at 19:47 Christ, they hype train is on full throttle! I hope the lad doesn't read this and just keeps his head down. Very impressed so far, but its been three weeks! And besides, who ever keeps Jack out of the match day squad gets a +2 Bonus, so his ratings are a little warped! 2
LegalEagle Posted yesterday at 21:32 Posted yesterday at 21:32 Based on what we’ve seen so far he’s a distance better than THB and the best centre back we’ve had since VVD. 1

I was thinking that - obviously a league down but can’t recall any of our centre backs dominating to anything like the same extent since VVD, who was exceptional. 1

Yeah, let's give him 3 games and start comparing him to one of the best CBs in world football of the last 2 decades. Funny how three games is plenty of evidence to make that kind of assessment. 1
MarkSFC Posted 12 hours ago Posted 12 hours ago The lad is decent, no question, and looks excellent for Us NOW, IN THIS LEAGUE. Whether that translates into PL standard we will only know if and when we go up. So far, 30m minus him for THB is looking ok....plus Abbot is yet to come in and I have a sneaky feeling we will be thinking he is better.

Bobsmith Posted 12 hours ago Posted 12 hours ago I agree we don't know how good he will be in the prem, but he was captain of a mid table bundesliga club so there is no reason why he wouldn't be a solid performer at prem level

Read carefully Fry and slow down. Firstly, I caveated my comment by saying “Based on what we’ve seen so far” i.e. a snapshot. Secondly, I said “since VVD”. I did not compare him to VVD.

I didn’t see a comparison - it said best we’ve had since VVD. Given that most CB’s we’ve had since him have been absolutely shite, it doesn’t seem that far fetched, even if a little early to judge. 1
Lighthouse Posted 11 hours ago Posted 11 hours ago TBF I’d never even heard of Kev two months ago but I knew he was better than Wes Hoedt. 1
Danbert Posted 11 hours ago Posted 11 hours ago Definitely better than Stephens and Bednarek. His distribution is poor though.

The rhetorical flourish you used is called "mentioned in the same sentence as..." which is basically comparing to that someone: because why else are you mentioning the other name? My point is it is a stupid comparison. If he keeps going like this Schlotterbeck could be the German making the most impact on Southampton since Hitler. 1

Cheered up a dull afternoon with an observed guffaw. Namaste Mr Fry! 1
