If you drop wanyama back you lose the defensively shield thst he gives you.

Yeah but you got your 'defensive shield' defending a spaghetti defence. Putting Cork in front of Wanyama means a double 'defensive shield' all be it Cork isn't as good as Wanyama he doesn't need to be as good as Wanyama, if he is behind him.

We need Wanyama to do a huge job in front of him today! Yoshida's positioning leaves a lot to be desired and is turned way too easily, but he's not as rubbish as people make out.

But good enough backup. We just have to hope Florin is decent...!!!

If you cast your minds back to last season, Maya had two stints filling in for the injured Lovren and did very well. I don't think he will let anyone down today.

Cant get his display against villa out of my mind. Who is going to mark their big guys at corners. we will miss rickie defensively at set peices. will pelle fill in?

you under estimate Yoshida. He's cool & will not let us down today

Agree - I think he's an okay centre back and certainly much better some others in the league as has already been pointed out. He's MUCH better than Jos, by some considerable distance. Jos is there for an emergency really and probably for his banter on the training pitch?

Most defences are going to struggle against Sturridge, Sterling, Countinho - and Lallana when fit. So it'll be no shame if we let in a couple of goals today. We just have to make sure we can put our chances away at the other end, that worries me more than Yoshida playing in defence.

Good point. We certainly lose plenty aerially with Yoshida instead of Lovren. Haven't seen enough of Pelle to know whether he can do the job Ricky used to defending corners and frees.

More important for me is the shielding they get from midfield. If Wanyama is on his game and Yoshida isn't stretched he has a chance. We stayed up two years ago with Yoshida and Fonte. With the right instruction they can do it again.

With gardos out already (hamstring) we are relying on Yoshida alongside fonte to me they don't compliment each other well as a partnership, do you think Yoshida is premiership level? Thoughts

Don't really care whether or not they compliment each other. It's whether they complement that matters. Mind you, it would be rather sweet if they kept telling each other how much they liked each others latest haircut etc ;-)

What are Yoshida's strengths as a defender?

Gardos has tood Romanian press that Saints told him he will play in about a month and needs to be ready to go then.

if you bother to actually watch him he does actually read the game very well when he is doing his main job of defending, sadly though he does punctuate this by playing the odd howler of an out ball that makes him look like he is wearing square boots, which in turn has everyone watching with their heart in their mouths as it re asserts the pressure from the oppos he has just relieved: sadly that one or two moments in a game clouds folks view on him overall.

Jose has similar moments but seems to get forgiven. Yoshida was bought to replace/cover Jose and Lovren was bought to partner Yoshida playing in his natural position on the right side of the central defenders. And fair play to Jose he saw this and upped his game which ultimately kept Yoshida out of the side last year.

Yoshida's better on the ball IMO. Fonte did well last year as he was aware of his limitations. Lovren would try and bring the ball out whereas fonte was safest first.

Funny, start of last season many assumed it would be Fonte dropped and Yoshi playing alongside Lovren.

Don't really get how he can't he called Prem standard, was a first XI player in our first season up and we survived. Granted he is hardly top level prem, but he can do a job.

I like him, but don't really want him as a first teamer.

Yoshida is what he is, number 3 CB in a Premier League side. To have a full international who has just played in the World Cup in that role is really quite good. You can't have three first choice CBs because one would be constantly dissatisfied with bench-sitting and CB is a position where you rarely bring the sub CB on during a game except only for injury reasons or to protect against a booking.

Yoshida seems to have been cast in the role of whipping boy by many fans who just take their lead from others. He certainly isn't rubbish because Japan would not have him as a first choice CB if he was, and Koeman wouldn't be content with him. It's true that he has been prone to make more errors than you would wish but he becomes more experienced as time goes on and he may well be a better player now than he was last season.

I'd go along with that I think Yoshida is a decent enough defender with a decent tackle his main problem seems to be some suicidal attempts at clearances and a habit of giving the ball away with sloppy passing.

Yoshida is prone to losing concentration and any pass longer than 5 yards tends to go to the opposition.

Hopefully Gardos being pictured taking part in training prior to the Liverpool match is a sign that he is not far from making his debut.

Yes, let's hope so. We didn't dominate our penalty area.
