Plymouth Argyle and impact on League One (latest: appointing an administrator)

Matthew Le God

Unlike many other teams in financial difficulty, there is a real chance Plymouth Argyle will be liquidated next week. Even the "safety net" of going into administration maybe unlikely due to a number of factors. Many Argyle fans think the away game to Brentford could be the last ever game for the Green Army. :(

If they are, then their results would be expunged from League One, the league would become a 44 game season rather than 46 and as things stand before tonights game vs Exeter it would in theory look how it does below...

This is what we've though before. This is what Pompey fans thought before. This is what Leeds fans have thought before. It's what fans of most clubs have thought before. It won't happen and they'll be absolutely fine.

I wouldnt want to be in second place on the back of a club going to the wall.

I remember much too clearly how I felt in the months before Markus came along and saved us.

Unlike some Argyle haven't cheated and lied their way through a mess so i hope they pull through.

- Leeds have a huge fanbase and potential.

- Pompey had £48m of parachute payments and even now could still go under.

Where as Plymouth have crowds of 8,000 in League One, huge debts, not paid players on time for 3 months and most likely trading whilst insolvent. There is a good chance they will skip administration and go straight to liquidation if no money comes from their Japanese investors.

Seconded.

Well if Plymouth Argyle had sold some more of their Championship team in the summer rather than January, maybe they wouldn't be in as much mess as they are now and maybe they wouldn't have beaten Saints in August!

I wouldn't wish that on anybody and much as I'd like the loss expunged I have always fancied a trip down west.

Weren't they after a 40,000 all seater stadium....until recently?

I wouldn't want them to go under either - fair point by MLG and Window Cleaner above though. Apparently they lobbed a couple of million at their world cup bid. Bonkers.

the club never lobbed the money for the world cup bid...the city did (i think)..it is a city bid, not the club...

also, the council have said they will not be bailing argyle out, there was talk about the council re-buying Home Park and renting it back...but that is not an option it seems..

their fans are litterally begging their japanese shareholders for money and sending petitions etc......that seems to be their only hope..

of all the clubs in the last few years that have gone into admin, argyle APPEAR to be in the worst state.....worrying times

Having been in that position ourselves I really hope Plymouth pull through & get themselves out of this mess. Don't think we'll need to rely on their misfortune for promotion, sure NA will sort things out so we finish top 2, starting tonight.

i agree would hate them to lose their football team

I'm certain they did throw some money at it...according to a Plymouth fan at work anyway. Apparently the council spent £136k

Despite the fact that SFC would benefit from it, there is only one club on the planet I would wish liquidation on, and it certainly aint Plymouth. It does however also begin with "P" and also hosts lots of funny men with a penchant for bell-bottomed trousers.

Hope something comes up for Plymouth.

So you'll be happy for them to go to the wall will you? You sound a little bitter about them beating us? and I thought you were one of the more reasonable posters on here.

I don't want them to go to the wall at all. I have a soft spot for Plymouth having lived there for a large part of my life. If any team were my second team, it would be Argyle.

So let me get this right, despite our club nearly going pop and all the pain that caused you are OK with it happening to another set of fans because you, without knowing all the facts, think Plymouth made one mistake. Then you fail to understand why people think its sad despite your brilliant post 11.

I reckon you want them to go out of business so you can get excited over the re-calibration of the table. Strange man.

Bet they don't. Just like Blackpool won't get relegated and the newspapers were 100% correct about Alan Pardew's precarious future as Southampton manager.

You're wrong so often I feel embarrassed for you.

I blame all the defence cuts!

Last season it was DSC's who almost, and should have, went to the wall; this season it is Guzz. 2 football clubs who in years gone by would have a large amount of their punters made up by matelots away from home and wanting their live footy fix, or by those who had moved to the area from elsewhere.

To be fair, I knew a lot of 'northerners' who would go and get their fix at The Dell, when it was still possible to pay on the gate.

I spent a fair amount of my time in the navy based in Guzz (Plymouth to you civvies) and, yes, a lot of their fans are bellends; but I still wouldn't want to see the club liquidated.

The other lot, however.........................

You forgot the bit about them getting away with circa £150 Million debt, whilst the Football Authorities did SFA apart of course letting them hav £46 Million in Parachute payments for them to sift that away as well

And now Plymouth can go to the wall for, (by comparison) a mere pittance

The Football League should hang it's head in shame

No, wrong, The Football League should simply hang

I hope that they don't go out of business. Not good for football (inspite of helping our position).

But....it shows that the whole of football is basically bust, not that we didn't know that. Sure some of the boys in the PL are sitting pretty, but the rest of us (maybe not us now with our owners, but if they decided to move on.....) are hanging on by our finger nails. Actually that also applies to the big boys in the PL, if the rich owners at Chelsea/ManC etc hit a bit of trouble or get bored.

Sky needs to be told where to get off. Their money has helped the PL but no one else really. Oh how I wish for the old days of when I first went to the Dell (mid-70s/80s). Smaller teams (now a days) could compete although I realise Liverpool dominated.

I worked at Argyle last season and the one before and had quite a lot of contact with the Directors, you could tell even then that they were in trouble, god knows why they went ahead with the stadium developments they're currently working on, they have a lot of nice fans (lots of old ones strangley) and it does remind me of Saints a bit, just a lot smaller fan base, their bid for WC18 was stupid, they'd never sell out a 40k stadium even in the premiership, the fans could see that then.

This. And they would happily have seen us go under rather than lose face and let our new owners appeal the 10 point penalty. Utterly shameful way to treat your members.
