Academy

I notice our Under 18 team seem to be doing very well at the moment, top of the league with a few games in hand. Cortese also said in his BBC interview we had one of the best U18 teams in the country now. My question is does anyone here actually watch any of the academy games? Are these kids actually any good, and are there any stand out players who look like future first teamers? If so who are they? Thanks

In truth no. We had one shot first half of any real note which was the free kick.

Your keeper Mourmont? was not exactly good. Very poor kicking and should of saved the free kick.

We have a bit of a gem in Williams who scored our 2nd goal but having 2 players in a team doesnt make you win that many games.

Your winger Isgrove and Argent (I think the forward) are bloody quick and will play at a decent level.

Given Lallanas injury I am quite surprised Isgrove wasnt given a chance tbh but I suppose with AOC the other side it may be too much inexperience

Not going to get to upbeat about under 18's' date=' we have had good sides before at that level and it improved the First Team How?[/quote']

Well it helped to keep us afloat by flogging most of them off when we had no money.

Our current best player came through the Academy.

From what I saw in a couple of pre-season games Holder-Spooner looked decent. Fairly quick, strong and liked to take his man on. Isgrove seemed good too. Good control, quick feet and tricky to defend against.

I haven't seen any games since then though.

Hasn't he signed some sort of agreement with us already? Plus, he he seems to be on the verge of the first team here already (On the bench earlier in the season). Would be stupid to move at this point in his development in my opinion...

He has indeed, pretty decent wage too. JWP will not be moving anytime soon, his parents are keen for him to progress with saints (despite being ardent P#mpey fans!). There has been interest from a lot of clubs including Chelsea and Liverpool but as I said, he is happy here.

James Ward-Prowse has been called up to the England U17s for the upcoming Algarve Tournament in Portugal. He has replaced Matthias Fanimo of West Ham due to injury. The tournament is betweeen 24-27 February. Should be good experience for him, hopefully he will impress :).

Wasn't Raheem Sterling bought from QPR just like Shelvey was bought from Charlton? It's a shame that clubs like Liverpool are allowed to buy the best young players from other clubs. There should be a transfer ban on players under 21.

If that was the case we would have missed out on a lot of players who we stole from other clubs.

If he breaks his leg will you think it was karma?

Southampton Academy 2 Pompey Academy 2

Pompey picked up a point at Staplewood – but only an injury-time goal denied them all three.

The Blues looked like they would complete a league double over their rivals as strikes from Carl Walshe (pictured) and Ryan Williams – who both netted in Saturday’s draw at Fulham – gave them a two-goal interval lead.

But Jake Sinclair came off the bench and pulled one back for the hosts on 67 minutes before grabbing the equaliser at the death.

Academy manager Andy Awford said: “We played very well in the first half and picked things up after falling below our usual standards at Fulham..

“Carl Walshe finished off a good team move to put us ahead, before Ryan Williams scored a fine individual effort.

“We dominated for long periods and were the better team in the first half. We deserved our lead and could – and perhaps should – have been further ahead.

“But Southampton upped their game after the break – as you’d expect from the home side – and they punished us for being sloppy in possession by pulling a goal back.

“Their equaliser came about five minutes into injury time and I don’t where the referee got that much added time from.

“But we can’t use that as an excuse because we didn’t do well enough in closing their player down on the edge of the box.

“That’s an area we haven’t addressed properly and something we’ll be working on ahead of Saturday’s match against Norwich.

“But overall I’m delighted with the attitude and commitment shown by the players. The fact that every face in the dressing room after the game looked disappointed shows how far they’ve come in the last six weeks – back then they would have been delighted with a point.

“We’re by no means the finished product yet but we’ve made steady progress and that pleases me.”

Pompey: Gledhill; Tallack, Magri, Tsovolos, Grant; Stockford ©, Colson; Williams, Harris (Jennings 76), Butler; Walshe (Fitzharris 90)

Subs not used: Fry, Seeley, Vine

Southampton: Dovey; Nicholas, Foot, Martin, O’Sullivan; Holder-Spooner, Moore, Robinson (Ward-Prowse 64), Isgrove (Chambers 24); Hoskins, Curtis (Sinclair 64)
