Roger Posted 20 February, 2011 Share Posted 20 February, 2011 Is it just me or are bournemouth and portsmouth dominating coverage of radio solent now? We are always third to be previewed, can understand that for league position but we have the most fans and feel that also the other 2 clubs have loads more coverage after match too. I started going to football in 86 and this is the worst radio coverage weve ever had imo. We had harrys game the phone in and great coverage in late 90s. Was a pre match phone in. Now we dont even have an after match phone in! Also we had radio southampton and great coverage with jimmy ball etc and commentary from case and gordon watson. Then had mark dennis etc on radio hants. I feel there is a need for another soton based radio station to cover the games as radio solent to me have got complacent. What do you guys think? For me worst coverage for a long time.

But generally, no phone in as there are at other clubs and our interviews and dave talking take up no time. The bmouth summariser although top bloke is on there the whole time, john williams. Pat from Poole Posted 20 February, 2011 Share Posted 20 February, 2011 I think we do pretty well on Solent, to be fair. I remember the old days when they didn't have full match commentaries and all you had was a god-awful ditty when a goal was scored at one of the three games and you had to pray it was a Saints goal or a goal scored by the opponents of Cheats FC or AFCB. And the music they played was godawful. It's a million times better than that now.
Tamesaint Posted 20 February, 2011 Share Posted 20 February, 2011 I agree entirely. I suppose that it would be argued that on league position we are the lowest club - but more fans go to SMS than to Fratton Park and Dean Court combined. You would have thought that Radio Solent would reflect that as fans = listeners. Mind you, Radio Solent (or Radio Giggle as junior & I call it) is so dire it is not true.Anything would be a better alternative to Radio Giggle. However, that was a long time ago and now full match commentary is the least fans expect. Other teams seem to get better local coverage. Also some of the music was awesome at half time and full time etc. Was thats just the way it is by bruce hornsbee and the range, and then they played at full time (music was my first love and it will be my last) with the really quick music. Can you remember the other legendary song they played around the 1990 period? at the end of game? Now they play that really wimpy music at the start and finish. The9 Posted 20 February, 2011 Share Posted 20 February, 2011 I'd say the coverage depends on whether you're listening on FM, MW or DAB... and they're all better than the internet radio stream ! Can't say it bothers me except if we're away and I'm not going.

Badger Posted 20 February, 2011 Share Posted 20 February, 2011 Go on david miles music was my first love and bruce hornsbee and the range, the way it is and youre remember the glory days of radio solent sport. Going back a bit further,in the mid to late 70's I think Solent used to begin and end its summary with the theme from the 1960's childrens TV series The Freewheelers. I was living out of area but from an upstairs bedroom, weather permitting I could pick up a very weak signal on Radio Solent to listen to the Saints pre match news, and updates two or so times a half.It might not have been great coverage but it was welcome. CWD Posted 20 February, 2011 Share Posted 20 February, 2011 I've got a bit of a theory on this. A few months back I was listening to Solent on the way back from a game, and a moany Bmouth fan texted in saying something along the lines of "Why are the Cherries still featured 3rd? We are much higher up the league than saints. moan etc moan". (we were midtable at the time I think) The anchor, I think Chris Temple, then came out with a brilliant line of "well it might be something to do with the fact that there were 23k fans at St. Mary's today compared to a maximum of 12k at Dean Court.... but...erm.... not that I'm being disrespectful to the Cherries who have had.. erm.. a great start to the season... OK so on to more of your texts then!" It came across as quite degrading to Bompey and CT was obviously embarassed and didn't mean what he said to come across as rude. Anyway, since then we have pretty much always been 3rd in the reports...

I think he angrily responded to a few Bompey fans after trying to sensibly and tactfully point his put across and assure AFCB fans their was not favouritism on Solent's part. They didn't listen and continued texting in rubbish and I remember he pretty much laid into them - and rightfully so. AFCB have this weird paranoia about being "left out" on Solent. FarehamRed Posted 21 February, 2011 Share Posted 21 February, 2011 I totally agree with Roger - I've thought for some time how poor Solent's coverage has become. I put it down to: the Skate summariser basically saying they can do no wrong, the Bournmouth summariser saying they can do no wrong Merrington giving a far more balanced view. Sometimes I wish DM would be a little more partisan.

teamsaint Posted 21 February, 2011 Share Posted 21 February, 2011 WAY back when, in the late 70's the format was different again. As i recall, for midweek matches, there would be reports during whatever show happened to be on. As I recall, but I could be wrong, there was a HT and full time report , and maybe for a goal. One of the good things was that it was often a rock show with Gethyn Jones, which was quite good, not least since this was still in the days when R1closed down between 7.30 and 10 pM, when John Peel was allowed to play for a couple of hours, so Solent provided some much needed music. Saint Samuel Posted 21 February, 2011 Share Posted 21 February, 2011 I have to agree, seems like we have to wait for ages before they start talking about Saints. The worst part of it is having to sit through a Steve Cotterill post match interview, its all moan, moan, moan, about having no money to sign players and having to play the youth team, he knew the situation before he went there. He also never says "we deserved to lose this one", always a poor refereeing decision in his eyes.

IMO, they should be. They're from Dorset. Yes I remember that, they said they should rename the station 'Radio Saints'. Then AB stated he was impartial he was making a whinge list and put that, and similar texts on there. Then a few weeks later said 'we' had played really well, when referring to saints. Still, not as epic as the old mabel who phoned up merrington recently. You could hear whispering dave and co laughing as they took the call! Or just after the sian massey thing, when one of our commentators said his 'wife could have fininshed better than that' pause 'or my gran (slight panic audible)'. "Or in fact, any person at all who isn't very good at footbal (relief was tangible!)". I totally agree with Roger - I've thought for some time how poor Solent's coverage has become. I put it down to: the Skate summariser basically saying they can do no wrong, the Bournmouth summariser saying they can do no wrong Merrington giving a far more balanced view. Secret Site Agent Posted 22 February, 2011 Share Posted 22 February, 2011 yes but imagine if you are a supporter of Andover? Or Bashley? Someone has to write or text in to get a mention and then they are forgotten again. The trouble is that they are trying to big up all three teams and we seem to not be flavour of the month, probably because the Cheates FC is the 'bigger game' and Bompey have not had any limelight in the recent years and have always been last to us. So in the BBC big book of balanced programming, we have had our time in the limelight, will have again, so give it to those on the up-and-up. Joey-deacons-left-nut Posted 23 February, 2011 Share Posted 23 February, 2011 All sides get equal coverage. Bear in mind that some times Bounemouth will get 1 min 32 seconds in a report and we may only get 1 min 27 seconds! SHOCK HORROR! No one team gets prompoted more than the other 2. Anyone that thinks otherwise is barking mad and has deep underlying issues. or like me, you just could'nt give a fck as there are far more important things to worry about than petty points scoring.
