God there has been a few.....

Sheff United, Spurs, Liverpool and Man Utd games already mentioned being the obvious ones

Less famous games, a 1-1 draw at home to Newcastle at SMS 2003 i think, brilliant end to end game which could have gone either way, both goalkeepers making brilliant saves and A Newcastle defender heading against his own cross bar from about 18 yards in injury time

4-2 v Swindon, league cup c1990, 0-2 down at half time, came back to 2-2 then won it in extra time

3-2 v Bolton FA cup 91?? Most exciting last 2 minutes ever

I agree, a fantastic but largely forgotten game, definately one of the best I have seen.

4-1 v Liverpool

6-3 v Man U

and the first 45 minutes aginst Man U when we won 3-1 (and they changed shirts at half time )

3-1 v Spurs in FA Cup at White Hart Lane mid 80s could have been 8-1.

4-3 v Norwich in 2006 (I think) was exciting.

I dont think your second match meets the OP's criteria because the atmosphere was pretty dire for most of the game but it was without doubt the most exciting game I ever saw at the Dell and the only time I ever watched a game under the East Stand

The 4-1 v Liverpool as mentioned several times above

The 4-0 v Spurs in Cup again as above

The 6-3 v Man Utd as above

plus for me

Saints 4 - 1 V Notts Forest in 1979 - Phil Boyer scored two, we were fantastic that day.

Saints 5 - 5 V Coventry in 1982

Saints 8 - 2 V Coventry in 1984 I think it was.

The best game i've ever had the fortune to be at has to be Saints 4-3 Norwich.

It's a shame it was essentially futile, but at the end, once Camara had scored the winner it was utterly amazing.

The first half was just total adrenaline...... but that nervous second half, my god.

I go with the FA Cup replay at White Hart Lane when we smashed first division Notts Forest 5-0, after two drawn matches 1-1 at Forest and 3-3 at the Dell. In the third game the Spurs officials had closed one stand thinking there wouldn't be a huge crowd but there was and by the time they opened it we were 3-0 up and loads of our fans had missed it

1989- Saints 4 liverpool 1

The best saints performance i've ever seen v a top of the league liverpool. The week before ( or after) we won away to Q.P.R. by the same scoreline and murdered them for 90 minutes .

I was at both. The best Saints back to back games I've ever seen. I will never forget the atmosphere at Loftus Road either.

New Years day 2002, away at Chelsea,

Chelsea 2 Saints 4

Southampton: Jones, Dodd, Lundekvam, Williams, Bridge, Telfer, Delap, Svensson, Marsden, Pahars (Ormerod 82), Beattie.

Beattie 2, Pahars and CMFL

...or Norwich 4 Saints 5

How about two games, neither of which we won.

Saints 2, Liverpool 3 in 1982. Included the best goal I have ever seen Saints score. Two teams going for it, just a pity that Liverpool nicked it late on.

Saints 1 Newcastle 1 in 2003. Again, end to end stuff. CMFG nearly won it at the end with a header that just went wide. Cracking game.

Just realised that I appear to have started this thread. Must tell my 14 year old to use his own login.

You ought to be having a word. 14 years old and he is going on Saints Web when he has the computer to himself...? Give him a clip round the ear and tell him to get his act together. He either makes the most of such opportunities by visiting TubeGalore or he can keep his hands off the computer.

2-0 v Liverpool at The Dell March 1984

Friday night and the atmosphere was like nothing i've experienced since. They were top, we were second (i think) and wallace scored two great goals.

Excellent match indeed. The previous season's game against Liverpool, which we won 3-2, was an even better match in my view. All the goals came in the first half; we took the lead, they equalised and went ahead, we equalised and got the winner - a superb strike from Nick Holmes. The second half was a brilliant 45 minutes of football in spite of there being no goals.

The FA Cup replay against Wednesday in 1984 was great, though in a different way. They played horrible out-and-out hoofball (offside trap just inside their own half, free kick, send all three centre-backs up, keeper launches it in their general direction - that was their sole tactic) - and yet they took the lead and almost got a second. Once we calmed down and imposed our play we took them apart. A great example of class telling.

Sheff Utd, last game of the season and 2006 4-3 @ home to Birmingham

That 4-3 against Birmingham was an incredible match. I can't believe no-one else has mentioned it (on this or various previous threads about the best matches ever).

Because in the grand scheme of everyones Saints watching history, it wasn't that special.
