RobM Posted 2 April, 2011 Share Posted 2 April, 2011 That's a bloody hard run-in. Charlton have the potential to scare most teams on their day, even if they lack consistency at the moment and are on a bit of a slump. Posh, MK Dons and Brighton are all going to be tough going and are all fighting for promotion too, so home advantage will count for a lot. That just leaves D&R and Brentford as 'sure things'. I'd say 7 points from that lot, 9 at a push.

Not taking anything away from them as it is a really impressive run.. but in that time the 2 hardest games have been B'mouth and Orient. Their hard run starts now, theyve avoided a lot of the playoff and promotion hopefuls in that time.
Acetripper Posted 3 April, 2011 Share Posted 3 April, 2011 Terriers fan here! Firstly, I'd genuinely like to thank you for handing out that 4-1 mauling just before New Year because that was the wake-up call we needed. Indeed, you're the last team to beat us in League One and that's nineteen games ago. Isn't it a shame the second automatic promotion place can't be settled by a game between Southampton and Huddersfield? Obviously, as it stands, you can overhaul our points tally because of 'games in hand' but you'll have to win all of those to make it count - not that you're incapable of that! So this coming week's going to be very interesting. A win for us against Peterborough would more or less put them out of the 'automatic' picture and your midweek encounter with Charlton is an absolutely crucial 'game in hand' fixture. Squeaky bum time! Personally, I feel that given we've been hit by so many serious injuries to key players we've done remarkably well. The list is - Damien Johnson (who had been magnificent in midfield); Gary Naysmith (50 Full Scottish caps at left back); Alex Smithies (England U21 Keeper - knee ligament damage) Gary Roberts (broken arm - but now recovered); and last but definitely not least 'The Maestro', Anthony Pilkington (dislocated ankle and broken leg). I'm not sure whether it's just coincidence but after losing physio/mental coach Steve Black things went off the rails injury wise. Looking at the remaining fixtures yours look 'easier' than ours: Which are! Sat 9th. Peterborough - Home Sat 16th. Charlton - Away Fri 22nd. MK Dons - Away Mon 25th. Dagenham & Redbridge - Home Sat 30. Brighton & HA - Away May Sat 7th. Brentford - Home But hey!...If we want promotion you have to get something from each one of these games and to be honest, the way we're playing nothing is impossible. Our unbeaten run has sort crept up on us almost without notice because there's been a lot of draws in with that and as a result, our fans haven't exactly been over the moon with it all the time. One thing we have done is improved our defending and as I started by saying, 'Thanks' for that hammering, it brought it home to us that you can score as much as you like but if you let the opposition score more - you lose! Regards to all - One way or another I hope you're both in the Championship in August!
ludgershallsaint Posted 3 April, 2011 Share Posted 3 April, 2011 Tuesday is the day. Opinion is split amongst their fans and amongst our fans as to whether the five points or three games is better. If we win Tuesday nobody can argue that we're not in the box seat and, likewise, if we don't win it'll be difficult to argue that they're not in pole position. A fair and objective post, but please note that if we win 1 and draw 2 of the games in hand we will go above you on goal difference which is far superior, win 2 and it's a point better ! In theory we have the easier run in, but being the Saints that might actually go against us ! Exciting times though, beats fighting relegation from the Prem anyway !! S-Clarke Posted 3 April, 2011 Share Posted 3 April, 2011 I'd prefer to go head to head with Hudders for 2nd as they have the hardest run in of all. They will drop points - and even draws will be costly for them with us breathing down their necks. I still think that a win at home park on mayday will take us 2nd, which will take us into the last game against walsall needing a home win to confirm promotion. Surely we wouldn't muck that up? Acetripper Posted 3 April, 2011 Share Posted 3 April, 2011 The fact is, nothing's certain! Which is what makes it a fascinating game. The 'fight-back' yesterday will no doubt have boosted any doubts you might have had. Funny how it works tough, if you'd raced to a 3-0 lead and MK Dons came back at you and scored two, the seeds of doubt would still be lurking. As it was, it ended the 'right way' around. God I love football! If the Terriers don't manage an automatic spot there's still the play-offs (hopefully) and what better way to do it than at Old Trafford in front of our adoring thousands. Expectation has been massive at The Galpharm this season but either way it's been a bumpy but enjoyable ride and the reason I'm still a life-long Huddersfield Town fan. Laters! Acetripper Posted 3 April, 2011 Share Posted 3 April, 2011 We're definitely a very different proposition to the one you played in late December! So as for 'choking' I'm not sure what you mean? True, in last season's play-off semi Millwall intimidated us beyond belief but our team comprised mainly young inexperienced players. This time we're more equipped to deal with bully boy tactics and we can play a bit too. Basically, Saints the ball's in your court, win your games, you're promoted and I'll be the first to congratulate you, because you'll deserve it! I'd like to say good luck but that would be silly! What about good luck in the play-offs!

Cabrone Posted 3 April, 2011 Share Posted 3 April, 2011 Looking at those fixtures I've got Huddersfield to get another 12 points so we'll need another 17 points off 9 games or 2 per game. MarkSFC Posted 3 April, 2011 Share Posted 3 April, 2011 Having looked at all fixtures I would be amazed if 18 more points wasn't enough for us and I actually thing 16 will be. Our max is 95 points which obviously would mean a run of 10 wins, but its possible! To guarantee top spot BHA need 12 points from 7 games. Take our game out and possibly Huddersfield, they have to win 4 out of 5! I reckon they'll get more like 13 or 14 points from their run in, not 12 or less as others predict .... 4 wins and a draw or two, from the 6 games. But we should be able to better that anyway, getting 19+ points from our 9 games. And we'll probably have to do that anyway, to make sure there's no way peterboro will catch up from behind. 6 wins, 1 draw and maybe 2 defeats as our safety margin --surely achievable if we really are good enough for promotion? farawaysaint Posted 4 April, 2011 Share Posted 4 April, 2011 Hooray for the vagaries of football! Hudders have the more intimidating fixture list in my opinion but on their forum they reckon ours is way worse and have us down for poor results in most of our away games and all seem to think the sheer number of games will be a factor. This seems strange for a couple reasons, 1: unless I'm mistaken we have either the best or at least top 3 away record in the league, (i'm sure we have the most goals scored? Go go gadget pedants.) Secondly we seem to always come back rusty after a break and should deal better with a cluttered fixture list, considering our squads vast depth it really shouldn't be a factor anyway. They are a good side, agreed. I think people are just looking at their run-in and it's probably the hardest of them all - so i'd be suprised if they win all of their remaining games (Which is what Lee Clark has stated they need to do). As long as we keep our form up (20/21pts from every 10 games over the course of the season) then I'm sure we'll make it. I cannot see Hudders bettering that return from their remaining games (they may equal it, but our GD is an extra pt and neither can overhaul that now) - the threat is still there from P'Boro but if we win tommorow night then we start creating a gap between 3rd and the rest... I can see them getting 16 points. Normally a point at both Orient & Rochdale would be fine, but a win & a loss would be better for us. Everytime indo the predictor on the BBC site its between us & them. Mostly we get 2nd by goal difference, but some weird things are likely to happen! Clark looks like a decent manager & if we do get 2nd i can see them & MK in the final.
angelman Posted 4 April, 2011 Share Posted 4 April, 2011 8/18 for me. Would be very surprised if they managed any more than 12 certainly. Their remaining games look a right ***** to be honest. Posh, Dons and Brighton speak for themselves. Charlton have found a bit of form (hopefully not tomorrow though). I did say that Charlton might hold the key for us and was told that they hadn't won in 8 games or something like that. Dag&Red are fighting for their survival, so while on paper it should be a home banker, stranger things have happened. Brentford, no doubt too far for a play off place, will most likely have nothing to play for. Maybe that will relax them and they play well - hard one to call. Torrent Of Abuse Posted 5 April, 2011 Share Posted 5 April, 2011 I am still worried about our run-in. To my mind, a lot of the run-in depends on WHEN we play the sides, more than WHO we are playing. We visit Leyton Orient and Rochdale when they may still harbour hopes of squeezing into the play-offs. By contrast, Huddersfield may play MK Dons when they have little to play for, with the Dons both secure in the play-off places and adrift of the automatic places. I guess we should hope for us to win, Bournemouth to win (so Rochdale and Leyton Orient have less hopes of catching the last play-off place) and Peterborough to win (so they still have plenty to play for against Huddersfield). Our two away games and Huddersfield's game v Peterborough could decide it. I'd certainly hate to go to Brighton NEEDING to win. I think we could do it but my heart wouldn't be able to take the strain if 3 points were a necessity.
Acetripper Posted 5 April, 2011 Share Posted 5 April, 2011 So, you have to pick up six points minimum from your games in hand and at least match the Terriers points tally from the remaining six games. Therefore, your games against Charlton, Rochdale and Plymouth hold the key. I fully expect you to win tonight, so you have to beat either of the other two - minimum! Then there's a matter of Brentford and Brighton away. That said, on paper at least, we have the hardest run-in but hey, I can't think of anything more juicy than the prospect of beating these teams. Our team is on an absolute high at the moment and we don't look like giving up our unbeaten run easily. In fact Terry McDermott has just stated in a Radio interview that our dressing room 'togetherness' is better than anything he's experienced in his entire football career and when you think what he achieved as a player that's one hell of a statement. I think they'll be busting a gut in that game regardless of whether it will affect their own league position, plus the higher you finish the better the draw in the play-offs. Seconded, stupid as it sounds it could be a tougher game than Brighton. Our lads will lift their game for Brighton but one lesson we have to learn is not to give Gary Jones at Rochdale any space to take aim from 25 yards. That was a peach of a strike and not the only one Jones has produced this season. Getting back to tonight, the key to beating Charlton is an early goal. Their win on Saturday will have given them a lift so we need to start quickly and put away any decent chances to deflate their morale again. We must have more width tonight and I'm interested to know if N'Guessan is injured as he wasn't on the bench Saturday and his pace caused them problems at the Valley as an early sub. Defensively, Charlton are still very vulnerable, Orient hit the woodwork twice late on from defensive mistakes and their keeper handed BWP a goal literally on a plate. See BWP has a late fitness test after limping off.
