Bertrand signs for a season long loan

Just spoke to a couple of Villa mates to get there opinion

He started off OK then went to complete ****e after few games.

Started really well but ended up being utter ****e. Could well just be down to the awful tactics and Championship quality defenders though

Will do a job providing he fits in well

Excellent signing. Should he impress, the club can make a stronger financial commitment next season. If he doesn't, then it leaves room for Targett to develop. There's very little risk yet so much to gain from Ryan Betrand. Very happy with this. Onwards and upwards - time for a CB and GK next!

Im please with this, great player imho

Was good whenever he played for Chelsea and won a couple of England caps when he got a run of games.

We need players, if a couple of them are loans thats absolutely fine. We have not used the loan system effectively imho. Times have now changed

i agree i think its a very good signing, low risk, low cost and proven premiership left wingback.

Slightly underwhelmed but I think I just have that feeling with English players nowadays probably because of their overpricing and the national team's constant disappointment. Being on loan makes it less disappointing from the perspective of we won't be paying anything for him, but at the same time I WANT us to spend something! So it's a tough one. I wish him luck, difficult situation to come into but he's shown promise before.

I know it's only a loan but is this proof that deals can still go under the radar? I don't recall anything being touted about this one? That could be encouraging that perhaps we could be close to other deals that we just don't know about. Hopefully, anyway.

I haven't been a season ticket holder for the last 3 years, so maybe i have no right to voice an opinion....but considering the amount we've recouped in player sales, i'm not impressed tbh.

Again, why the insistence on spending money just because we have it?

We spent £15m on Osvaldo and £800k on Steven Davis. It's not about the money, it's about the right deal.

I shouldn't be surprised... but there's a lot of hypocrisy on here... all these players who after one season of success want to turn into prima donnas and buy success at the first sign of trouble.. we slag them off... then all the fans on here act the same way..

planned.. thought through and leaves space for Matt...

His CV looks impressive so has potential but not given the opportunities as most English players at Chelsea. Has played for England at all levels and also CL final. I think it looks a good move. May be saving the money for 2 or 3 big signings. That works for me.

Neither of the Villa links about Bertrand are particularly critical of him, in fact he began well but are far more critical of the club. It was more his wages on loan when Villa were so skint. Not really a problem as he's probably on about the same or slightly less than Shaw. £10m is quite a big fee if we wanted to keep him and stayed up but then LB is a specialist position. I'm quite happy with the signing anyway and I've been quite critical of the board the last few days. Like I say, good reports from my Villa supporting colleagues and they are generally critical of most things Villa-related at present!

Rory Smith of the Times is reporting

Bertrand an unspectacular but astute signing for Southampton. They're after Nathan Redmond, too, which would also be very nifty.

I think it's a bit of a PR gaffe really. At the moment, it looks like we've brought in £100m or thereabouts and borrowed a player for a year. The assumption being that you only borrow when you can't afford. If Saints had announced their marquee signing(s) before announcing a loan deal then all would have been well. I guess the fear is that there will be no marquee signing, just a couple of loans and the cash disappears from the club coffers.

Because i don't think he's that good, and it's not really about how much money we have to spend...........I don't think the 'bored' have handled things well over the last few months, but I trust them, maybe an unpopular view atm but i do......I just don't rate RB but I'm not a manager of a premier league football team so it doesn't matter.

Well I'm happy enough with a loan in the left back position - doesn't discourage targett to much and doesn't lock us in to a player who has shown ability but maybe not on as much of a consistent basis as he should

Obsoletely mind boggling the response of the majority on here

Good business this.

Decent player. Can slot straight until the team whilst Targett develops.

If he does well but Targett doesn't meet expectations then we can exercise the option and have the benefit of continuity.

All that without blowing millions on an unknown foreign player.

I can't believe some of the comments on here criticizing this deal. Anyone can see he's a good player, and anyone should be able to see that this is a shrewd piece of risk free business.

Extremely underwhelmed by this. So what if he played in the champs league final when Chelsea had no other options. Mediocre to poor player. And on loan too. At least we know for sure where the board are aiming us at now. As the saying goes - don't pay attention to what somebody says, pay attention to what they do. So Ralph you can spout your **** but in reality all you have done is sold Shaw and brought in an also ran on loan. If Lowe had done this we would all be up in arms.
