Tommy Setford at Arsenal is one we like.

Wasn’t he a Saints fan born in Netherlands ?

But why can we not go out and buy a GK, experienced and made for the first team, not another ‘might come good’ protege ?

GK is not a position to piss around with.

Seriously wonder about our club and the people involved.

Perhaps they haven’t. But they’ve not had the resources to replace them. Or the willingness to do so from above.

This. 1000% this. Let the top 20 keepers go to the prem and just sign the 21st best and be done with it. No reason at all that we shouldn't be looking for the best or near the best keeper in this league. Absolutely ridiculous that we'd risk things again by not bringing in the necessary experience in such a key area.

I'd say Bazunu is one of these 'club pet project' types, so the narrative fed to the coaching staff is to play him I'd expect. This is why clubs appoint yes men as managers, who go along with whatever they pitch.

Now, I still hold out hope that Will Still isn't a yes man and he will have his own strong views on the GK situation. He doesn't strike me as stupid.

In all seriousness, should bednarek and Ramsdale happen that's going to be about £60 million from sales and we are told we are in a much healthier position this time than last relegation and with hefty wages off the bill. I'd like to see us start using some of this financial muscle to strengthen in the key positions in attacking areas.

It's nowhere near 60 million because Ramsdale is going out on loan.

What is exactly is the advantage for Newcastle in going for a loan ? Apart from handing him back if he’s crap.

We’re not talking mega money going into or from this years accounts.

From our POV we save on wages for a year, and we get an upfront fee as a loan, which I believe will class as direct income as it's not directly linked to any profit made on him - and he'd still be on our books as owned by us.

They want Trafford, not Ramsdale. Now they can get Ramsdale, trial him for a year and see if they want to spend on him next summer or spend on somebody else who might be on the GK market in a year's time, but isn't right now

Also they're going to be reshaping their attack if Isak/Gordon move

Loan or sale Rambo won’t be back.

GB is now nailed-on as a starter for Wrexham. And that in turn gives strong indication, for me anyway, that the starting CB’s will be the outstanding from pre season Quarshie plus….somebody who knows GB knows his game from playing together previously and who trusts him and vice versa and all that gooey stuff - Jack.

BUT it’s a calculated gamble and any goalkeeping errors first few matches I reckon Saints / WS will not hesitate to pull the trigger fast before end of window and replace him as first choice. If on other hand he does ok - ie some worldly saves keeps clean sheets no fucking passing to their CF nonsense we will still bring in an adult experienced GK but maybe not in the AR category as competition rather than as auto starter. Like the Cabellero geezer remember?

Essentially the Will Still narrative is : you got injured, went away on loan it did not really work all that well, injured again yeah thats unlucky - BUT your keeping stats are not good Gavin. Not all your fault I get it with the style of football you were forced to plays But Let’s not delude ourselves. They gotta improve. I believe in you. You are gonna be my starting keeper - but you know Alex can come straight in and do a good job - so produce your best form.

No need to say “or else”. These guys are pros and should know the score. Meanwhile 100% line up a replacement / alternative to Aaron in case good Gav reverts to bad Gav form cos he’s not getting a whole season to work on finding it…he’s got a handful Of matches tops and if he fucks up v pompey even fewer..

It is possible that their might be a clause in there that says he returns to us in the event of promotion, that would align with what Dragan said in the Echo interview?

It's obviously too early to serve such a judgement on Spors at the moment, but there is a doubting voice knawing away inside my head that's making me wonder if Spors and Sport Republic really have "learned from their past mistakes". As always, time will tell but, as others are saying, what they do about replacing Ramsdale will be the acid test...

A friend of friend connection to the club on the scouting side so it tends to be more snippets on who we're interested in/have been looking at rather than who we're actually following through on.

In general, there is a feeling that we didn't shift anywhere near enough of the dead wood and those that didn't want to be here last time we came down (at least not early enough and so it impacted first couple of months of the season) and the new management team don't want a repeat. Aribo will be gone in the next few weeks as an example. And on incomings, it's absolutely a focus on quality over quantity. Sounds like they're amazed internally that Downs wasn't picked up by a Premier League team.

His dad grew up in Hampshire and went to school in Alton so there are connections there and they see him as a future number 1 but don't disagree with you that it would be a big risk as if he came here, Arsenal would want him to play every week overwise what's the point and sticking a 19 year-old in for a side needing promotion is a gamble. Get the sense the club don't feel like they need to spend the earth to get promoted again which would allow more £ for transfers if we go up when it really would be needed (like Sunderland/Leeds so far this summer). Ipswich splashing out big money on Hackney might change their mind though...

Baz is better than people here think, and gets over scrutinised for every move he makes.

His stats were very similar to ederson and only slightly below Allison during the promotion season, it was partly the fault of our system of play, which focussed on giving opponent strikers the ball in the most dangerous positions on the pitch.

He's looked good preseason, I'm not worried if ramsdale goes. For some reason from day one ramsdale got a pass for minor errors, whereas baz gets pilloried for the same things. If fans can get over that, he'll be fine.

This is exactly what I was expecting. Bazunu has one good half and people think we’ll be fine with him in goal. We will not.

Losing Ramsdale is expected but frustrating as for me it felt the first piece of a proper 2020s PL Saints team. Not to be though. I do not expect him to return even if it is a loan. Loan Johansson now.

If any of this nonsense is true we are continuing to repeat past mistakes. We need a complete reset from the dross that got us into this position of having a bloated squad of underperformers who were an embarrassment last season. Now you're telling me that you expect Baz and Stephens to start in our defence. It is bonkers but I would not be surprised if it turns out this way. We cannot seem to learn under SR.

Good news on the surface, but given we're still shopping in the sub-£10m bargain buckets (Downs = £7m; Quarshie £3.5m) when are we going to see players in the £10m - £20m range heading our way, given that's where said "quality" will be found....?

There's no chance we are aiming to have Bazunu and McCarthy as the main keepers for the season. Once Ramsdale has officially gone, we'll start to see links with a new number 1.

Hopefully it's sorted sooner rather than later, Ramsdale was a transfer deadline day signing after all.

We did have links to a few keepers earlier this summer and we appear to know for sure Ramsdale is off with 5 weeks left of the transfer window.

Lumley has gone so we need another keeper regardless. Hopefully we land on the logic that we bring in a new number 1. Loan with an option to buy to replace Ramsdale makes sense, keeps the flexibility there to bring him back if everything aligns.

Someone like Rushworth (just joined Coventry unfortunately) would do for this season, someone with potential to be a PL keeper. Maybe we will tap into the German market again, the first 2 signings from Bundesliga look decent so far.

I know a lot of people will disagree with this and go on about competing at the top level, finances of club but us being in the premier league is pointless. It’s a sham of a “competition” set up exclusively to make the big clubs riches by appealing to the global audiences on TV and making as much money as possible. Everyone else is just cannon fodder who might get the odd few seasons of relative success but soon put back in their box.

Charlie Setford has been told he can leave since Ajax deem Reverson a bigger prospect and have Joeri Heerkens coming in from Sparta Prague and they signed Jaros from Liverpool on loan as their new No.1.

In truth we need alternatives to charles/Downes that isn't Smallbone And we need someone to compete with Fernandes if by some miracle he stays. I would say defence is sorted other than keeper and probably attack up front too so midfield is what we need.

Not sure if already mentioned but surely we should be going after Johansson at Stoke. Arguably been the best keeper in the championship for two seasons running.

He doesn't get overcriticized at all. He's judged on pure facts over 2 full seasons with us.

Season 1 - worst keeper in the PL by a margin.

Season 2 - Worst keeper in the Championship by a margin, promoted in spite of.

Season 3 - Injured, went on loan to a very low quality league 2nd half of the season and still struggled with similar 'expected' save stats. He was listed for loan all January, and we had no takers - only ended up at Leige because it was managed by his former youth coach @ City.

Even if you take stats out of it and just look at him with your own eyes, you can quickly see that he's not a capable goal keeper at a high level. He's not physical enough, not tall enough and his wrists are not strong enough. He doesn't command and he cannot make saves, unless they are directly at him.

I wanted him to do well but the bloke is done and we cannot rely on him next season. Ramsdale may come back to us next summer, sure, but we still need to take this opportunity to move on from Bazunu and McCarthy. This is now the acid test for this 'new' recruitment and club setup.

This x100. I simply cannot understand why there is any debate on here about him. He is demonstrably shit and I dread him playing anything but a minor role for us ever again.

Clearly we do not have enough creativity in the current squad and need new blood in this area. Ok, you think Fernandes and Dibling will fill the roles (if still here) but what about injuries or tactical changes? We are not awash with creative players unless you can name them.

Posted

As I said previously, no PL teams are willing to trigger Ramsdale's release clause - Ramsdale is obviously aware of this. However, a loan may be a clever way of doing this - Ramsdale then gets a year to try to get himself past Pope (which I don't think he will personally), and if he does Newcastle will pony up. If not he comes back to us, most likely in the PL.

Players aren’t stupid, they know that’s what happens. Hence a good promotion bonus is built into the contract and he’d still be on a fair chunk more as #2 in the PL than in the Champ for Stoke, who barring a Mark Robins miracle won’t be going back up anytime soon (neither will we if the club are dickheads about sticking with the grim goalkeeping duo of doom). One flying boot or loss of form and he’s a PL keeper.
