I was gunning for us to sign Mat Ryan last Summer, before he went to Roma.

He was bloody good for Brighton - which yes, was a few years ago now. But kept 17 clean sheets for AZ Alkmaar in 23/24. Roma didn't work out for him, but he played 18 games at a good level in the second half of last season (6 clean sheets).

A season as #1 for us, followed by potentially becoming the new McCarthy next year? Sounds like excellent business. Sign him up for 2 to 3 years.

Albeit it's probably all moot, since there's bugger-all basis for the speculation...

As a professional coach (not football) I am an optimistic when it comes to improvement of athletes. Im certain Bazunu is already better than 23/24 season, and expect him to be better than last season. Our new GK Coach will surely get some improvement. 

 

Leaving said that though, will the improvement be good enough for a team wishing to win the championship and then play in the PL next season? 

Im not convinced by that. 

Matt Ryan does not seem to me to be any better than AMC from what I can remember of him, and also from what a few BHA fans have told me previously, ok, but not spectacular. 

I think Patterson at Sunderland would be a good shout but to be honest I don't really know!!

I do think that the GK is a very crucial signing this summer so let's see who comes since.

Good signing for Ipswich, they aren’t hamstrung by an oversized squad and PSR so can comfortably outspend us and Leicester.

Yeah I don’t think it’s a bad move. If we go back up, we don’t have to scramble around for a PL standard keeper, if he hasn’t made the #1 spot his own there

This is quite interesting, as I thought they might be in a bit of trouble. By most accounts of fans of other clubs I know, it seems they 'bought' League One a few seasons back (although mostly on free transfers and loans), then spent comfortably (again on loans) to go up to Prem, then had a net spend of around £130 million last season failing to stay up. Their income over the past 3 years must be less than half ours with TV money and gate revenue etc, but guess they're not (yet) stuck with no hopers on long contracts for far too much money... Just feels like last season was a big step that means they might be needing to sell more than just Delap to be spending out much.

Looks like they are selling Broadhead to Wrexham for almost 8 million.

All we know is that Saints will now be buying (loaning) a goalkeeper, unless Moody becomes number 3. At best he will be no more than competition for Bazunu. Gav has the opportunity to grab the number one position but very much last chance saloon for him. I've a bit more time for Baz than some on here, but the thought of Baz in goal against Pompey makes me feel a tad queasy.

I remember that hideous game at Fratton Park when Niemi went on loan to Pompey for 20 minutes......

I think that, because if we don't get promoted, we will be even more keen to lose his wages. That kind of bargaining position doesn't lend itself to getting a top price.

My money would be on Sugawara or Taylor, probably followed by THB and Fernandes.

I hope it's ABK but I think we will be stuck with him for a little longer unfortunately.  

I also think we will move on Aribo if we can due to his high wages.

Aribo, ABK, Taylor and don't be surprised if Smallbone departs as well in terms of the ones we want to shift on. 

THB and Fernandes we want to stay but plenty of interest so will be about maximising return if they depart and we're in a good position given money taken in on other departures so if they go, it will be for plenty of £.

My fears for the overall weakening of the squad are starting to come true - Fernandes leaving will seal it. Time left to bring in replacement talent I guess, but we’re talking SR levels of incompetence and previous form in panic buys. We’ve still got a lot of dross in the squad and other than perhaps Quarshie not a lot to feel optimistic about in terms of new signings. The prospect of Bazunu, Stephens and Manning starting against Wrexham leaves me feeling cold.

Did anyone seriously expect Ramsdale to stay this summer? If I had to predict I would have said he would be first out.

I mean it's inevitable isn't it? It would be a BONUS if we could enjoy Fernandes and Ramsdale in the Championship, not an expectation.

The noise I'm starting to hear now is making me a little more optimistic, we seem to have people now conducting a root and branch squad cull. Taylor, ABK, Aribo, Smallbone, Edozie, Sulemana, Onuachu, not good enough, we know it, and we don't seem to be keen to hang onto them. Which is a positive. (We've already shifted a few)

This will free up wages, funds and squad space to replace that block of 4 with better - so even though we lose Ramsdale and maybe Fernandes, we have the potential to be stronger overall by replacing the likes of Aribo/Edozie/Smallbone etc.

Could be a very busy 4 weeks. This is when the moves will start to happen, pre-season coming to a close, manager knows who he wants and what he wants - clear picture. Now Spors can get into action.

The chink so far is in the Stephens contract, but if they don't blindly fall into Bazunu as first choice and replace the 'dross', then we're in better shape than a while.

Nah not at all, Raphinia had already been at Leeds for 2 years. Finished Top 10 with them in Season 1, so was a fully established top level player.

Fernandes has had one season in the PL, good player he is, but it's probably more 'realistic' to see him here in Sept than it would have been for someone like Raphinia - especially given where he ended up.
