Saint86 Posted Friday at 12:02 Posted Friday at 12:02 (edited) 1 hour ago, Saint Scott said: Southampton Football Club is delighted to announce that an agreement has been reached to secure the signing of promising young central defender Joshua Quarshie from TSG Hoffenheim. A Germany Under-20 international, Quarshie will join the club on a four-year deal from July 1st, becoming Saints’ first signing of the summer and the first addition under new Men’s First Team Manager Will Still. The 20-year-old made his Bundesliga debut aged 18, earning most of his experience with Hoffenheim’s second team, as well as on loan with Fortuna Düsseldorf and Greuther Fürth, making 28 appearances in the German second tier. Standing at 6ft 5in tall and boasting explosive pace, Quarshie was statistically the fastest player in 2. Bundesliga this season with a top speed of 37.04 km/h. Group Technical Director Johannes Spors said: “Joshua is a talented young player with good experience for his age, having played more than 80 senior games already in his career, and has tremendous physical qualities. “His outstanding athleticism makes him a natural fit for the energetic playing style our new manager hopes to implement. As a club we are committed to improving young players, and Joshua is very determined to develop his game with us.” Joshua Quarshie said: “It makes me feel very happy because Southampton is a very big club with very good history. From the first second, I felt Southampton is the right club. “English football is a little bit rough and I like this kind of playing style. With my height and my body, I think I’m in the right spot. Since I was a little kid I was dreaming to play in England and now it’s coming to reality, so I’m very excited to play here.” A CB with pace and power that actually wants to be here?!?!?! Plus he's young, hungry, and guaranteed to improve? 😨 I'm dreaming right? What's wrong with him, is he injured? Does he pass like Wanyama? There has to be something... I hope they don't earmark the older, experienced pro position in the back line to Stephens. Someone like Ben Mee would be perfect. If we play three at the back then: Sanda Edwards Mee Quarshie Stephens (would prefer he left tbh) Would be good options in the championship. If we go into it without another one then I'd worry that we leave ourselves light on experience. 1

Story goes Fonte came came back from the Euros playing billy big bollocks and making all sorts of demands, his agent had put some info out that Man United were in for him to try and force Saints hand but we didn't back down and that was the output of it Thats about the nub of it - not speculation, as I heard the pretty much the same from someone inside the club at the time. If we had played him in Europa League games, if Man Utd had stuck in an offer in January the value would have dropped through being cup tied in Europe, which would have been no good to our selling club profile. Having just won the Euros and best mates with Ronaldo, the comment "You've changed" was allegedly a hat he wore well - being a bit of a cockwomble didn't endear and each week he was out his stock was increasingly diluted: welcome to West Ham. 2

Problem with that is we are unlikely to attract a big money striker in the championship.. probably unpopular opinion but the likes of onuachu AA and archer are still probably very strong for championship level .. however shit we where this year a lot of them are still very fine championship players as we saw under Martin 2

What was strange was that the club didn’t do a big splash trumpeting his a achievements at the Euros. So perhaps one party or other had set this in motion before he even got back to Staplewood. Lighthouse Posted Friday at 13:59 Posted Friday at 13:59 He seems to fulfil the criteria of 'wouldn't want to get caught in bed with his missus' I expect from a centre half, which has to be a good start. I'm hoping he's being seen as a player who can come straight into the first team and not more fodder we're just looking to loan to Goatse and never actually play here. 1 1

Hence why I described the range of Bundesliga 2 bringing Championship 12th to League One 8th. Which is a fair comparison 🤦♂️

S-Clarke Posted Friday at 15:13 Posted Friday at 15:13 (edited) With this fella, and Sanda in the U21's, we have a couple of absolute physical beasts of CB's. It'll be interesting to see how they develop over the coming years in the rest of their game, if we get a chance to enjoy them that is. Something I hoped ABK would bring us was pace and power when he signed, and at the start he kind of did, but that didn't really equate to anything further. There's a hell of a lot more to defending than just being quick and powerful, but they are two pretty unique ticks to have in the box as a CB for sure. From what I've read this fella seems like he's more in line with the first team than Sanda, but we'll see how both go. Definitely a sign that our first signing is quick and powerful. Mr X Posted Friday at 16:02 Posted Friday at 16:02 Part of our downfall was there was no real plan to replace championship players with premier league ones... The players we got In were poor, (fernandes aside) are we just going to repeat the exact same mistakes again should we ever get promoted? They knew the likes of AA and Stephen's smallbone frasier etc were never going to cut it in the premier league This guy looks like he has got the right attitude and has the height and pace but at just 20 is he ready or more a signing for the future?

HarvSFC Posted Friday at 21:39 Posted Friday at 21:39 On Jose Fonte, he changed his agent to Jorge Mendes before winning the Euros. An agent who had lots of contacts at the bigger clubs, and was Jose Mourinho's, the manager of Manchester United at the time. I know we don't know completely what went on, but that public knowledge suggests Fonte wasn't completely keen on staying here. It's still funny how West Ham ended up being his best offer and then China, but he did seem to have a late career revival. On Bale, I always thought he made his debut against Derby on the opening day, where he also scored. But, turns out he started against Millwall in April of 2006.
