The problem is,  someone with a glittering resume is not coming to Southampton.

Unless its been achieved at a lower standard of league.

I've not looked into Vierra's track record but I think its been at smaller clubs in high standard big European leagues where its likely going to be a struggle for a lot of managers.

My gut feeling is he would be great.

He'd rule the roost and with his stature and he'd have a long honeymoon period with players, owners and fans ..we need that.

Go get it him Dragan.

Yep, you've won me over. He'd have a Koeman like feel.

I put O'Neil at Gerrard's level, like a Poyet - a former footballer who should never have got a job.

That's a bit of an odd take when Poyet won a promotion, won the manager of the year award at Brighton, managed a team to a League Cup final and kept a terrible Sunderland team in the Premier League. Keeping that Sunderland side up was quite an achievement - they were dead and buried, 7 points adrift at the bottom of the league in the second week of April and he got 13 points from their last five games and kept them up.

He's been shit since then, and was obviously an absolute weapon, but he achieved more as a manager in English football than anyone we've had in a long time.

I don’t claim to know as I’ve never studied his teams that closely, but I’ve seen others on here claim GO’N plays a slower ‘keep ball’ game too - I do recall Wolves fans fuming at them being one down in the final minutes of a crucial match and them passing it around the bank (sounds familiar!).

That said, *my* impression was that his teams played quite aggressive ‘front foot’ football. The main thing I like about him however is that he has “something about him” - and I get the distinct impression he’d have no problem getting the hair dryer out, which is something we desperately need.

The main downside is the P*mpey link. Frankly, I couldn’t give a toss about it, and I honestly think people need to grow up a bit on this point, but it would be nice to have someone at the helm who had the backing of all fans…

Agree with that. I get that football and is fans are tribal, but, we need the best manager available, not the one who's past is more appealing to fans or who the players can have a laugh with.

I don't want more passing for passing sake, I'm done with that so Carrick doesn't really appeal, but I'd take him.

GoN style, and to an extent GoN himself, is the most appealing of the available options.

I honestly don’t understand those on here saying they have no problem with Gary O’Neill.

If his record was like Jurgen Klopp’s, then fine, possibly worth the risk. But he’s done absolutely nothing to suggest he’s worth the abuse and banter from skates.
May as well appoint a different bang average manager that doesn’t have a history of loving the skates.

Imagine losing at Fratton with him in charge.

Fuck. Off.

Having been freshly sacked by Genoa (proper basket case club before he joined them) i could certainly see Viera being lined up for interview next week. Gut feeling, but could be a good fit for SFC, one of the Hoddle, Koeman, Souness, type of appointments. Plays good football and did very well at palace in his first season with them, top half and fa cup semi from memory. Think the english leagues suit him.

Just been reading about his managerial track record his time at Strasbourg sounds familiar

From 24 September to 7 December, the team went on an eight-game winless run, which fans blamed on a summer transfer window in which four 20-year-olds were signed for a combined fee of €53 million but struggled to perform

id be happy with him but I think he’s only managed in top divisions in France, England and Italy so can’t see him coming to the championship

Viera is a good shout for me, would he now see himself above a (which we presently are) struggling Championship club? But I agree with 'sfc4prem' and others that he'd walk through the door with the aura of a Koeman. Instant respect.

He's the kind of personality that this club is now crying out for, you'd expect he would have a fairly instant impact at this level.

If O'Neil didn't have this connection and self-confessed admiration for the skates I would say he wasn't the worst choice, I still wouldn't want him, and I think he may very well improve through experience. But anyone who went down there in 2005, we were (in hindsight) lucky not to get in until long after kick-off as the OB deliberately delayed our trains, saw the damage saggy had done to that side that day...anyone got that shot of Redknapp winking...?

I reckon he would mate, think he has previous with Spors, so hopefully our resident Danish pastry wont put him off. Get the sketchy record, but of all those being mentioned reckon we would be a mutually good fit. Now convinced myself that he’s incoming 😊

Edwards is still Boro manager, but won't be in charge today. Obviously he's leaving, but that's a weird situation isn't it?

Would be funny if he doesn't get the Wolves job now he's already burned that bridge.

Dear Mssrs Spors and Solak,

Good morning gentlemen.

I know you and/or your representatives use this forum (amongst others) as a barometer of fan opinion, so I hereby declare that the majority of us would be happy with Viera.

Please therefore make it so.

Yours,

Lord Trousers and his Saintsweb chums

Where has the Viera thing come from is that just wishful thinking or managers available?

Wasnt there a report we were looking at Germany for next manager?

I hope you’re right. Of all the names mentioned he’s the one that is most inspiring

Fuck. Off.

I'm not worried about losing there with GON at the helm, im worried about losing there full stop. So, let's get the right fucking guy in to give us the best chance of winning there...and everywhere else too.

Is that GON? I'm not sure, but my memory of his previous jobs was that his sides competed well and Wolves were very hard done by by the officials.

The question we should be asking is, is he the guy you think can galvanize the squad and turn them into a runaway train? That might be hard to imagine at this point, but a couple of tweaks, a striker in January...and then who knows.

Personally, I like the idea of turning a skate into a Saint and removing a 'legend' from them. I would love seeing him win at their place. A big smile on his face as the fourth saints goal goes in.

Wishful thinking lads it's going to be Gary O'Neil better get used to it.

Completely irrational but my big concern with GON is the game in January- I still have that twitchy bastard thumbs up to Mandaric in my head 4-1 debacle

He will divide the fans from day 1 and that’s not what we need right now.

BREAKING: I’ve had it on good authority that a figure has been seen leaving alongside Johannes Spors and Rasmus Ankersen from a London restaurant on Thursday.

Sources say he was wearing a bow tie and had yellow dots all over his clothes.

Fans will be divided regardless, I’m really not keen on Viera.

He wouldn’t divide as much as the skate would and certainly not from day one.

I think the biggest worry is that we will all expect whoever gets the job to hit the ground running. I think the team is so fucked up that it will take quite a lot of coaching just to get them out of bad habits particularly in defence.

We need to get plenty of clean sheets to take the pressure off having to score 3 goals every game. I just want a manager who can deal with the princesses in our team and knock them into shape.

It's OK. Viera is shacked up in a Hamburg hotel to make sure he fits the German criteria

Carrick’s odd have shortened slightly. Snuck him in on matchday for an interview and to watch the shambles that he could call ALL his?

Monumental?

from Saints fans?

😂

This.

It won't be monumental, but it will be broadly unpopular. He will have to get off to the perfect start or forever be a manager the fanbase doesn't accept. And besides that, he just isn't very good.

It would quite blatantly be a bad appointment... which sadly means it's more likely than not that its the kind of appointment SR will make.

Worked with Spors and Tonda at Gerona, that's all.

Sacked too recently for it to be a viable option. It is not going to happen but nice distraction.

Why does the recency matter? Is that because he might still be getting paid by them so wouldn't take another job on?

I was wondering if we could go for Pereira...or is his stock too high for a championship job?

It doesn't happen much. And I don't think it is going to happen Serie A to the Championship.

If he was a Saints legend then maybe but he hasn't got a huge reason to come to us right now.

Be great if he did.

Sorry that was me. Thought I'd go incognito and sit near them for some ITK but my souped-up hearing aid broke down.  Bloody thing weighed a ton too.
