Right now we can clearly see what he brought to the Saints' overall team performances.    There's a huge hole in midfield where he used to play.

There's also a huge hole at captain..... another aspect of JWP's game that some on here criticised. It was really noticeable in the last 2 home games how no one was really pulling the team together, to rally and fight back. I've nothing against AA but he doesn't seem a captain to me. In fact the most vocal player seemed to be young Harwood-Bellis.

It's also noticeable how JWP is quite vocal in the bits of West Ham games that I've seen on TV.

Often used with 'your' - your Man Utds of this world. Your is used to offer and example, but then users proceed to list all the examples - your Man Us, your Citys, your Liverpools, your Real Madrids, your Barcelonas of this world.

Fans on here claiming Romeu leaving was the right move (as his was past it) is a thing of beauty.

I never thought he was past it but it was fair enough that we let a long-serving player go to his hometown club. The real issue wasn't even that we didn't replace him but that we didnt sign a backup for his replacement

Should be an arrestable offence.

It's a little tiring all of the "I told you so" type posts...  We all knew JWP could be quality, but it's also fair to say we haven't seen him at his best since the early days of Ralph.  Last season I can only think of Everton away where he dominated a game.

We are now having it confirmed that the reason for that seemingly was the structure at saints and how he was asked to play.  The number of assists he has from corners already is testament to this and yet another reason to lament the management / coaching in place the last few years.

If we aren't going to utilise a player of his quality properly it's arguably better for all concerned if they are moved on to a club who will.  Now £30m seems a steal, but for how he has played in the last few seasons it was a fair price in the summer.

I would suggest that the number of assists from corners has more to do with the quality of teammates in the box rather than the management/coaching. There are a lot of stats that show JWP to be better now, this isn't the best example.

Fair enough, but it's only a example.  I ain't trawling through stats to try and prove my point 😂

I'd disagree it's has more to do with quality of teammates.  Set piece coaching is a huge part of any teams setup, and lesser teams can and have used them in the PL to be effective offensively.  The fact we had a quality dead ball specialist and yet rarely scored from corners or indirect free kicks is pretty damning imo

YES ..whilst some people maybe " appointed " from on high, leaders often "emerge"  from the ranks.

I don't know who the Hammers captain is supposed to be ?...   but another term like this one might see JWP getting the nod.

Agreed. Many past situations have shown that good chances are often missed . Despite the  misunderstood criticism he took at times

Rory Delap had devastating long throws that were seldom used properly by Saints but when he, Beattie and others moved to Stoke

they wreaked havoc against opposition defences.

TBF, I think Delap changed his technique at Stoke. I seem to recall his throw-ins for us were, although long, also quite looping, giving time for defenders to counter, whereas at Stoke they were whipped in much flatter and faster. Perhaps that was a coaching issue?

Looks like Ward Prowse`s move back to the premier league has not made the slightest bit of difference to his England chances

Not his fault that Southgate is stupid though.

No idea how he doesn’t make that squad.

Southgate is laughable.

Talksport rhapsodising about JWP and amazed he hasn't made the England side. Same JWP who they didn't mention before he moved. So idiotic that players are obviously picked (or not) for the teams they play for. Mind you, he is better than Kalvin Phillips

I can find nothing to laugh about regarding that absolute James Blunt. He has wasted an opportunity of a lifetime  to bring success to the national team.

He should have left us years ago. He might be one of the best CMs in the Prem now if he had.

I would not go as far as to say that but playing in a succesful team with a decent players does help a great deal

Another WH goal from a JWP corner !

Shows how shit our players were on getting on the end of his corners.

Think we scored once last season where he’s already done 4 in 9 games for West Ham.

Continue this form and he'll be on the radar of all Prem clubs including City. An accurate passer who has end product as well now. He'd be much more useful than Phillips in their team.

He was much better in his Zaha baiting days ! A good solid member of a team now .

Phillips I can vaguely understand off the bench although he’s not played enough football to start. But Henderson is now playing in the equivalent of the former NASL, there’s no way the Saudi league is consistently as competitive as the MLS theses days. And he was declining fast for Liverpool, Klopp knew it as well.

JWP is one of the most consistent PL midfielders at the moment from whatever angle you look at it from. And if Southgate insists on picking Maguire as a two-up to supporters and press, at least give the slap head some quality deliveries to attack going forward.

Chat GPT has the answer

"What is it called when people keep picking players in a team even though everyone knows they are not good enough?

It is called favoritism or nepotism, where individuals are selected based on personal relationships or preferences rather than their abilities or qualifications."

Never understood this call for players to retire from international duty while they’re still young enough to get picked. So you’d like them to throw a hissy fit and act like a 5 year old girl when she doesn’t get her way just because the current manager doesn’t pick him for the squad? Footballers are petulant and childish enough as they are, we shouldn’t be encouraging more of it.

As we know Prowsey isn't the same player as those two. Certainly not a defensive midfielder ala Phillips.

I always think quality players can make a manager look good and despite evidence of the results with his career at england showing otherwise i still think he's of the standard when he was the middlesborough manager.

England players flatter him - he did pick people originally on merit but he has now fallen back on the maxim of the managers cliche of picking players who've earnt his trust previously, not the fact one wins a camel for a man of the match performance and the other spends more time doing doing a review of premier teams benches that playing football.
