£10 mil, I’d bite their ****ing hands off. He plays like he’s washed up and he’s still youngish. Wake up and smell the coffee, he’s not going to improve

rather JWP than HOJ or Lemina, and playing the way we do, he will play well in the right CM position and will see him get a nice few assists drifting wide getting in crosses.

a mid of JWP Romeu and Armstrong would be better than HOJ Lemina and Armstrong, if we are going to be sticking to this 532 formation, cause JWP just offers more than HOJ or Lemina even if Lamina is a lot better physically, he is just to slow to read the game.

Mark Hughes - according to The DE:

Mark Hughes has admitted that Saints will probably need to move players on before they could consider signing anybody else, and that means plenty of work still to do.

It's more to do with the fact that we can't fit anyone else in the 25 man squad, and it'd be a waste of money to have someone on the books who can't play at all.

Financially we have the means to sign players, absolutely.

Shame you cannot appreciate the value JWP brings to the team.

Who can?

5 managers haven’t. Neither can every other premier league manager, as nobody appears to have made a serious attempt to sign him. Why’s that?

Great son in law, poor premier league player.

I've lost count of how many times this argument has come round. More than with any other player I can think of, he generates such vitriolic views.

It seems to be an accepted truism that he brings nothing to the team, can only pass sideways and backwards, is slow, etc, etc. I really do wonder how many of his critics have just read this so many times (from the same posters) that they assume it must be true, without ever having really watched his play.

He's better than any other player at the club at linking play, bringing the allegedly flair players into the game, recycling the ball when options aren't open. If you watch him, you'll see he's always making himself available to keep a move going. He works as hard as anyone in defence, rarely gives the ball away, gets into advanced positions and can shoot. It was his shot that hit the post for our Celta Viga winner.

In each friendly he's improved the team when he came on and I hope he starts on Sunday.n

Haven't they? Surprised he wasn't shipped straight out the door if he was that poor. Or maybe, 5 managers saw him as a valuable member of the squad. Not to mention successive England u-21 managers (enough to make him captain) and Gareth Southgate who called him up for an England squad.

Is he a world beater? No. Has he fulfilled his potential? Possibly not. Is he a very decent squad player who cost us nothing other than wages? Most definitely imo.

How many years has someone said that this season will be his break through year ? Every manager he’s had has tried to find a place for him only to end up benching him again eventually, most sooner rather than later.

If there is more to him than being the go to dead ball specialist then I’m still to see it.

I’m yet to see him be a dead ball specialist.

Thirded’dddd.

Think he gets the short end of the stick because he cost us nowt, nice chap with it and doesn’t cause ripples. Unlike spending £10m-£20m with the headline “Saints most expensive signing” and having a sulk when not in the team, but the manager feels obliged to play the paid for player, whereas an academy product easier to sideline because there is no visible outlay.

Offering £10m is taking the piddle.

his free kicks and corners got us 1 goal and 3 assists last year ( more than any other player on the team BTW ), not to mention 8 other big chances to be put in the back of the net, same amount as Tadic who managed over twice as many mins.

if he had got the same amount of mins as Tadic I reckon he would have a lot more assist to his name last season, so real question you should be asking, is why are managers not making the most of JWP abilities and using players who have proven time and time again to be to wasteful and not as intelligent and read the game as well as JWP does?

This is why he don't get played. he is happy being a swaud player for the club he loves so don't kick up a fuss being on the bench, so imported players are taking a spot that really should just be made JWP so he can have a nice decent run in it instead of starting once every 3 games with the odd 15 - 20 min at the end of games.

MLG pointed out that with several meeting the U23 criteria we have something like 3+ spaces in the 25 man squad and 'being a waste of money' wouldn't be Hughes' concern so neither of those points are relevant.

It’s about what he’s worth.

I realise people want him to do well, hell im one myself. But people need to face facts, he’s a bit part player in an average squad.

I don rate him I’m afraid.

If it means bringing a more influential attacker in I would sell him in a heartbeat.

For all the discounts sales we’ve had over recent years, it’s telling this is the first bid we have ever had for him.

Depressingly mediocre at best. Give me Jake Hesketh or Josh Sims any day of the week.

23 years old 160 odd apps in one of the toughest leagues in the world, has reasonable stats too and has improved his goal and assist tally every year despite the team getting weaker and weaker and worse and worse managers along the way?

I know ppl like to bash him, but this is just wrong :mcinnes:

The games I saw this season, where he got a chance, I think he looked one of our better players. I think he has to play on the right cause nearly every ball he puts in the box is dangerous, whereas nearly every Cedric cross is no thrat at all

Never has one of academy prospects ever split the fan base so drastically. For one, I'm a fan of his, he's not going to change the world but if he were better than he is he'd be at a top 6 club. He's a good squad player for us, tries hard and appears loyal.

For £10 million, Watford can jog on. JWP is a £25 million + player whether you love him or hate him.

Scored a huge goal from the free kick away against West Brom last season.

Count me in the keep JWP camp.

Unfortunately I don’t think Hughes rates him enough to start.

Awesome goal

I know u meant

btw just couldn't resist putting other one up, such a perfect free kick Edited by Mosin

Those figures really aren’t much to shout about. So he’s a dead ball specialist. I just don’t think he’s a particularly good one, or at least hasn’t fulfilled the promise he showed years ago. Pretty bang average free kicks and corners. Nice chap I’m sure, but one can’t seriously say a pivotal cog in our side. Squad player.

You know he is the only person who assisted a free kick for us last season and he only took around 10 of them during the full season, you know how many assists and goals Tadic got from the penalty spot corners and free kicks? all of them. 0 and he took around 90 % of them including all but 1 in the last few games for us last season.

Sorry Tadic scored 1 penalty last season, which JWP would have scored had he been on the pitch.

Good player, absolutely no chance we'd sell for £10m. Start at £30m + addons. Hope he nails down a starting place this season.
This. Good player, even though much maligned by many on here.

All of JWP’s previous managers rated him enough to start him.

His total PL appearances are listed first, with his sub appearances in parentheses, dated back to Poch’s last season:

17-18: 30 (10)

16-17: 30 (eight)

15-16: 33 (19)

14-15: 25 (9)

13-14: 34 (eighteen)

And the conclusion I take is that he starts less than one in every two games which isn’t a lot given the emphasis on rotation.

Quite incredible, some of the views on here. JWP for 10 million......which is 10 million less than JRod, about 18 million less than Maddison, etc.

JWP is an excellent player, lives and breathes Saints and has been hard done by both the muppet and Hughes. I would far, far rather have JWP in the side than the w****r that is Lemina who turns up some of the time only, Hoj who is not as good as JWP or Romeu who was rubbish last season and looked poor this pre-season.

I have never rated Hughes as a manager and he is showing nothing currently to indicate he is a good manager. Tactics, not giving some of the Academy graduates (JWP, Sims, Gallagher) more game time in pre-season rankles when the likes of LOng and co are blocking their progress.

10 million is ridiculous in todays market

Sounds about right. 22 starts under the arch-rotator Puel was a decent enough return, though.

I’d be surprised if he starts at least one in two PL games under Hughes, which is a shame in my book.

'Club he loves?' When did he join the Skates?

Yes, he has ability, but the thing that is most frustrating about him is that he doesn't use it often enough. He is too safe with the ball, when he should be putting in a through ball for Gabbi to run onto, he stops and turns or passes sideways as soon as an opposition player faces him up, even if they aren't within 5 yards of him!

As for his crossing, he can't seem to hit a decent cross on the run and never whips the ball round the back of the opposition defence.

When he feels like it, he can battle his way into a game, but I guess that is because he thinks he can out muscle the opposition player he is up against, which isn't the case for most of the premier league midfielders he faces.

Never been a massive fan of him he is still a player, after all this time, who doesn't even have a regular position in the squad. He isn't a holding/DM, he isn't a proper 10 or attacking midfielder and isn't really a wide player. Takes a decent corner and always gives his best but really he is a jack of all trades master of none central midfielder a useful squad player. If Hughes is going to play a back three I can't even see where JWP is going to fit in the matchday elven.

If we sold him to free up space/money/wages for another more useful signing I wouldn't mind but 10 million is taking the **** if Jack Grelish is worth £25 million JWP is certainly worth that to.

We need as many players that care as possible, especially in the relegation run in when other mercenaries will be looking more at their next club. Ward Prowse is one of those. Keep. Ten million is a total joke. If we sell we really must be up shiiit creek and also be utterly stupid. Ps we need a striker.

In the current climate, £10m is a stupidly low amount of money. If he was playing regularly in the championship for Norwich, they'd have to pay £25m to get him. As it is he has what, 160/70 PL games under his belt at 23/24?? Mad.

Plus he is the poster-boy for the pathway - the only reason to sell is if he wants to leave.

They might. Grealish is one year younger than JWP with no where near the PL experience and Maddison, while 2 years younger, has never played above championship level so right now there is no reason for them to cost more than JWP other than some idea they will potentially be better one day as opposed to buying a PL proven player.

Maybe he can see the writing on the wall and wants a new start

If we have to sell someone to free up a squad place for a new signing, personally I would rather let Targett go than JWP.

Left back is a position that we are better covered in than midfield and don’t understand why Targett is suddenly seen by many as “must keep” on the strength of a couple of decent passes in a meaningless pre season game.

I think we would also get better value for Targett at this point particularly if Fulham still interested.

I thought he did really well last season and I'm surprised Hughes hasn't used him more.

Seemed as if we had finally found his best position as well, playing on the right. He isn't the quickest, but he makes up for that with his delivery and close control
