Eh, every international break someone comes along to say he's put in a man-of-the-match performance against some European minnow or other. Fact it, it's been almost three full seasons since he was an effective PL player. The pace of the game has overtaken him, and most of the time he's a dithering liability.

Because the likes of Elyonoussi, JWP and Armstrong have been tremendous this season. Not getting any younger but he still could have offered more than those players have

ROI would get relegated if they were a Premier League team, it’s no real boast running the show against them. Armstrong seems to be his long term replacement and even he doesn’t get into the team, most of the time.

ROI havent won a competitive game in 2018, running the show against them is something we could all probably do tbf.

Nope, probably a better footballer than you or I or anybody who sits in the stadium would have ever have been.

Tbf I am a better plasterer than he would ever be

It's strange how you write so much good stuff about Saints and the games we watch but have prosecuted this blinkered, negative view of Steven Davis - who is clearly now in decline but has been a tremendous asset for the Club and NI. Even now, he looks a better midfielder than JWP, yet your forensic eye has somehow missed our dead ball specialist.

It's mostly because there is a consensus around JWP that he's pretty mediocre except for his striking of a dead ball. I largely agree with that verdict so there's no need to labour a point almost everyone shares.

On the other hand I disagreed with the consensus that SD was one of the best/most under-rated/finest signings of recent decades, as I regularly saw him let us down defensively and slow us down in attack. I've never been on a wind up, just stating a point of view that I didn't see many others expressing based on what I watched week in, week out.

Fair enough - it's been obvious you haven't been on a wind up, and I take your point, that even in his pomp, Davis was at times poor defensively. It will be interesting to see if Armstrong fills that AM role consistently well which is where I thought Steven Davis was best placed.

6th in the list of all time leading assists for Saints, only behind MLT, Tadic, Dodd, Beattie and JWP.

good player on his day.

Realise the point you're making, and that you didn't magic up this statistic but it's hardly "all time" so much as since Opta and others have been recording this for the Premier League/geek era.

If it were all time then I expect others, Paine and Sydenham in particular, would be well up on that list and ahead of most of those mentioned.

It does reinforce Davis contribution to Saints though over the last six years though, which many overlook.

Just going by what the EPL site says, if you don't like it, you can always get in touch with the FA and moan. https://www.premierleague.com/clubs/20/club/overview OFC Paine and co, never played in the EPL cause it didn't form till 1992. soooooooo………………………………………….

The fact that he's behind JWP in the assist table despite having played the equivalent of over 55 full matches more (14000 minutes vs 9000 minutes), says pretty much everything you need to know about what a mediocre player he's been for us.

There's a little bit of truth in the Rangers rumours now, but Davis' family are v settled here. It would have to be his retirement club, and i'm not sure they could match his wages? Personally i think SD could thrive under RH. For his age Davis has a tremendous engine on him. He's probably one of the quickest to press out of our midfielders, and reads the game well. You can't replace players like SD, not in relegation fights. You need the older player's around the place. Even if it's off the bench, Davis should stay until the summer.
Totally agree. Discarded too early and has a role to play.

His engine is a two-stroke that has run out of oil. Past it, get rid. Are there 2 Davis's? I'm confused. The one I see has been on the bench for a reason.

Since lists were taken I'll bet. Terry Paine laid on more goals in his 700 ish games than anyone on the list. He was the most accurate crosser of a ball I've ever seen. Steven Davis not even in the same class. Ron Davies used to get better than twenty goals a season from his crosses alone. The team used to score anything between eighty and a hundred a year. You did also say All time not EPL.

Steven Davis couldn't press a pair of trousers. He never tackles head on, always slows up making sure he doesn't have to, pulls out if there is any chance of contact and presses from too far away allowing the opponent to bypass him. As for tracking mostly goes halfway then has his head in his hands after the player he stopped tracking scores. He's out of contract on 30th June.

I saw an engine that was going strong for the whole 90+ minutes against Spurs, whereas Armstrong went off after 80 minutes, and Austin was blowing out of his arse after 10 minutes.

I assumed there was truth in it when he was filmed on video saying "hopefully" to whether he'd move to Rangers a few months ago.

Given that a move north of the border was allegedly agreed in the Summer and was then pulled by Saints, much to Davo's annoyance, its hardly any mystery that he will move in January or next summer when his contract expires. Personally just a bit surprised that Gerrard will have him, thought he was more inclined to take youngsters.

Their policy in the summer was seemingly to sign any player with 2 legs. I can't imagine their policy of the last 3 seasons has helped their finances.

Regardless, Davo would be a top signing for them. He'd be a class apart up there.

Good luck to him, has been a key player for us in a very successful period for the club. Reckon he will still do well up there. Hopefully this and a few other outgoings can go through early in the window to give Ralph some space in the squad to bring in some new blood.

Madness to get rid whilst Hoj is suspended and Lemina has a serious loss of form. Unless Ralph has a new midfielder under his sleeve.

Wouldnt it be better to promote more from u23 like Slattery rather than a proven past it player or someone out of position?

Only way a player can return to form is playing up to manager to get arm round him and get him back to self belief and form.

Wish Davis good luck wherever he goes...if he goes.

PL too fast for him now but if this squad had half of his professionalism, work ethic and ability the club wouldn’t be in such a mess. Rangers would be a good move all round but would like to see him return as a coach in the future. He must despair at sharing a dressing room with Lemina, Hoedt, Cedric, Moi et al. Gerrard won’t tolerate that rubbish so he’ll find it a more professional environment. Hopefully Ralph is allowed to rip the current shower apart and bring in a few younger legs with Davo’s attitude and work ethic. Getting rid of the dozen or so wastrels that need to go in the next couple pile of weeks won’t be easy though.

13:25DAVIS BACK TO RANGERS?

Southampton are willing to let Steven Davis re-join Rangers if the Scottish club can muster an agreeable contract offer for the Northern Ireland midfielder, Sky Sports News understands.

The 33-year-old, who switched to St Mary’s from Ibrox in 2012, is entering the final six months of his contract on the south coast and Gers boss Steven Gerrard is very interested in bringing him back to Glasgow.

They won't be able to get close to his wages, but he REALLY wants to go back which will count for a lot.
