"Saints considering Mauricio Pochettino" - Daily Mirror

I have a theory...

Adkins & Cortese relationship has deteriorated. Blackpool have asked to speak to Adkins, Cortese has accepted it & found us a new manager.

This way he is not sacked & the club will tell us Adkins wanted to go to Blackpool.

Common sense alert!

people read rumour on here, then post it on twitter, someone else reads that tweet and puts it back on here as fact.

Surely this. Cortese would be crazy to do it at this stage of the season.

But then he sacked Pardew out of the blue.

It will only be a bad decision if Pochettino doesn't perform. If he does we will all be happy and NA forgotten - thats football fans for you.

I don't give this rumour any credence at all, but just a little conjecture on this scenario to pass a little boredom time and to debate a hypothetical situation.

The guy speaks little English. OK, he might be understood by the Spanish speaking players like Ramirez, but others, even those with Spanish sounding names like Lallana will surely find it difficult to understand him. So how is he going to inspire the team with his stuttering English, or the services of an interpreter? Can the club get one who speaks Spanish and Japanese too?

The guy has zero experience of the English Premier Division. From that point of view, Adkins is the more experienced of the two of them. This guy's track record in Spanish football isn't anything to write home about either. He's hardly a big name in European football, nobody to set the pulses racing.

How will the Spaniard get on with the Italian Chairman? It was rumoured that Cortese has had meetings with Gross and Di Matteo too. Nothing happened with them.

I'll believe this when it happens and in the meantime, if it did actually happen, then my reservations about how good a change it would be would be based on the above points.

I understand Mauricio Pochettino is to be brought in as a defensive coach and not to replace Adkins #saintsfc

I sincerely hope that this is utter bollix ! League 1 to the Premiership in 2 years he DESERVES better than that. To sack him now would be harsh in the extreme, he's a good manager and a good bloke imo. To change manager at this point in the season would be madness.

Southampton Football Club has this morning appointed Mauricio Pochettino as First Team Manager, having relieved Nigel Adkins of his managerial duties.

Forty year old Pochettino has earned a reputation as one of the most talented young coaches in European football thanks to an impressive spell in La Liga with Espanyol.

The Argentine was widely linked with a future role at one of Spain’s top clubs, but having left Espanyol in November now joins Southampton to continue his top-flight managerial career.

Pochettino will take charge of training on Saturday ahead of his first game as Southampton First Team Manager on Monday evening (21st December) against Everton in the Barclays Premier League.

The Club would like to thank Nigel Adkins for his service over the past three seasons, and wish him well for the future.

Executive Chairman, Nicola Cortese said:

“This decision has been made with the long-term ambitions of Southampton Football Club in mind. Whilst we acknowledge the contribution Nigel has made during the past two years, for the Club to progress and achieve our long-term targets a change was needed.

“Mauricio is a well-respected coach of substantial quality who has gained a reputation as an astute tactician and excellent man manager. I have every confidence that he will inspire our talented squad of players to perform at the highest possible level.

“He also shares my belief that the most successful clubs are built by nurturing young players through a development system that provides a clear path to the First Team, thereby creating a culture that keeps them at the Club for the long term. This is an approach he has employed with great success in the past and I look forward to him bringing that experience and expertise to Southampton.”

Southampton First Team Manager, Mauricio Pochettino added:

“This is the kind of opportunity that any coach would relish. Southampton is a club with great heritage, and an even more exciting future. There is a clear vision to take the Club to a new era of sustained success in the Premier League, and beyond, which I’m delighted to be part of.”
