Think Clynes got a point to be honest I am not an advocate of sulky players but i would be furious if i had played the best two years of my career played really well in the previous Internationals only to be dropped for Jones Second best defence record in the league and then to say that league doesn't count!!!!! FFS ROY THATS EXACTLY WHAT YOU SHOULD PICKING PLAYERS ON YOU MUPPET!! No wonder we are **** as a nation - no manager has got the balls to shake things up

John Cross is a right Jebend and so is Hodgson. No proof whatsoever that "he stormed" down the tunnel. He probably just wasn't in the mood to celebrate a meaningless win when he's only played a few minutes and had a poor centre half + central midfielder picked ahead of him for both games, even though he's the best english RB by a mile. Absolutely baffling decision from Hogdson not to start him in either game let alone both!

Is it just me or is it also unprofessional and reprehensible for Hodges to communicate this through the media? If he wants Clyne to shape up and accept his backup position shouldn't he tell him that privately?

Amazing that nearly three quarters of the people voting in the poll after that article think Clyne is England's best right back with the remaining 25% shared among six players.

2nd is Henderson a central midfielder and 3rd is our ex 2nd choice RB

The clearest indication that selection for England is less about those in form and more about whether your face fits (and the prime way for it to fit is to be at a 'big' club whether or not you're in the side every week or not). Odd and I'm not surprised Clyney was a bit miffed.

Same isn't applied to Delph though?

Yeah they're percieved as Large but not in 'The big 6'

I would be furious if I was clyne too.

Being left out like that for Phil fecking Jones

Alright for Roy to say Taft he would be disappointed if players thought they could walk into the side after 1 good season.

Funny how sterling and others have had a shocker yet start. Townsend hardly plays and starts

The man is an utter clown

Which other country plays players out of position so often, when there is no need to?

As for Phil Jones, most people in the country seem to think that he should never be anywhere near an England team. But Hodgson, with his sanctimonious and patronising style of speech and boring, old fashioned tactics and team selection has continued the theme of the last several years of making the national side into something that is hugely boring to watch.

I don't understand what Hodgson is getting at here. Clyne didnt demand a starting place so why is Hodgson hypothesising? It would be reasonable for Clyne to expect to be selected on merit. He wasnt selected on merit despite Hodgson acknowledging he'd had a good season. Perhaps one season as Englands foremost right back isnt enough so lets go back two seasons. Still ok, he was outstanding then as well. No, the decision was, apparently tactical. Trouble is, tactics didn't work too well. Both full backs had a hand in the goals conceded and a flaky defence nearly threw away two points in a game England dominated. Henderson looked lost at right back such that Hodgson brought Clyne to shore things up. Imsuppose selecting the two full backs that have been integral to the best defence in the league for most of last season is just too obvious for Hodgson.

Gives him a good excuse to leave him out at will now, and probably use Clyne's alleged strop to tar Ryan with the same brush. If I was a natural right back I would be pretty ****ed off at make do right backs getting the nod ahead of me, bit of a slap in the face........... Spend all season playing against Internationals and get usurped in the national team by someone who can't hold down a regular spot in their own team and plays each week against lads just making their first steps in football: absolutely bizarre rational.

I was beginning to think that when it comes to international football, you have to put club loyalties aside and accept that someone with Hodgson's experience, who sees all the players play and train, knows better than a partisan commoner. And ultimately, the England side continues to win, so something is working. But these comments are troubling; it is admitting that you are picked on the basis of name and status rather than whether you are the best man for the job. It is one thing sticking with a proven player going through a bad patch (like Joe Hart), but another to persist with Phil Jones, who I for one have never seen have a good game - for club or country!

"We think Nathaniel Clyne is a very good player but I would be disappointed if anyone thought that on the basis of a good season with their clubs they can walk in and demand a place."

As opposed to on the basis of what, exactly?

what an idiot hodgson is. so basically he's saying you can be the best player in the Prem but that doesn't mean you'll start for England. What kind of demented logic is that?

The same logic that meant that MLT got so few caps.

As close as we'll ever get to an admission of what we all know.

Indeed. Google bollocks translation: "Join one of the big teams son, and then you can start for England."

This will end up like the Lallana / Clatenburg spat . In 6 weeks when NC is singing his new clubs praises , we' ll all be able to post "Woy was right , he got too big for his boots " .

Whilst he remains a saints player , Woy is a complete plum who wouldn't know a right back if one bit him on the arse , nether would Gary Neville .

Sure we might be seeing this through our Saints tinted glasses, but in reality Clyne is pos/prob the best English RB in the country at the moment and to play 2 non-RB's in his position is just very strange. Some might think he is already too big for his boots.

So here are some possible reasons for Roy's attitude towards Clyne.

1) He doesn't rate him.

2) He didn't look good in training.

3) He's being bloody-minded and doesn't want to be told who to pick.

4) He thinks Phil Jones is a better player, more reliable, experienced.

5) Clyne doesn't play for a big team.

6) Hodgson doesn't know what he's doing.

7) All of the above.

Missed anything?

I pick no 7.

He has been bribed by gamblers to field a weaker team.

He has been bribed by Jones and Gibbs.

He has been told who to pick by someone higher up in the FA.

He lost a bet and has to do this as a consequence.

He has been replaced by a body snatcher.

Given your restrictive English libel laws, I should make it clear that my post contains jokes. I certain do not think a body snatcher would play Henderson at right back and do not want to be sued by one.

I'm inclined to think Gary Neville has no say in the starting 11 and that he would actually be a far better manager for england.

I'll never understand the reasoning behind needing to play for a so-called big club. Do Man Utd shirts hold magical powers I am unaware of? Will Clyne's form suddenly leap ten-fold the moment he slips on a Liverpool kit?

Joke manager, how we will fail again in the main tournament because he sticks with Rooney (choker) and puts out his usual old boys who are just plain ****.

Bet you Kane, Austin and any other half decent striker would of scored 3 the other day, Rooney is a cock....

Commentator: 'Rooney saw that the keeper committed early and slotted it in the corner'

NO HE DID NOT AS HE DID'NT EVEN LOOK.

I think that has more to do with the crappy opposition England play in most qualifying games.

Poot Clyney. All he needs to do is sign for Liverpool or Man Utd, then he will meet Roy's criteria for being able to walk into the team. Nice of Roy to admit form doesn't count for much.
