Europa League 2016/2017 (Died 8/12/2016)

The coefficients in pot 3 were between 15 and 31 so we are more likely to drop to pot 4 than move up to pot 2.

I'm pretty sure when we reviewed last seasons group stage we calculated Saints would have been in pot 3 same as Augsburg who had the closest co-efficient to us. Let's hope if it comes down to it we are ahead of West Ham.

Loads still to be decided but can anyone rank the teams already qualified for the group stage in order of co-efficient?

Is this replacing the thread created on 9 April or the one created on 5 May ;-). Maybe someone could merge them all ...

Quite.

The9, you were't so keen on merging when you started thread on 5 May

The first two threads were discussing qualification for the EL.

Now we know we are in the group stage a new thread is a good idea. Discussing how to get 9 teams qualified for Europe can be left behind.

Never. That was the bestest thing of all.

And last year, with the Fair Play entry, England might have been able to get 10 clubs into Europe.

According to Wiki, we are currently the last seeded team. Wow.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016%E2%80%9317_UEFA_Europa_League#Group_stage

I would like to see teams local to me; looking at the third round qualifying line-up, this means Rapid Wien (AUT), Rijeka (CRO) and Luzern (SWI)

Presumably the dropouts from the Champions League will upset these rankings?

Great city, just got back from Stockholm but very expensive place to go boozing!

I went to a party in Kristinhamn in central Sweden. I was the only person who had gone a shop and bought booze. Literally everybody else had made theirs.

I played Rugby 10s there a few years back...great place to go out and locals were all friendly and place was very relaxed, but as you say, it wasn't the cheapest weekend!!

Correct.

In the Champions League third qualifying and playoff rounds, the draw is split into the "Champions route" and "League route" - basically the Champions route is, as the name suggests (more than the competition name itself), for those who qualified as league champions, while the League route is for those who got in through their non-winning league position.

There are 15 teams in the "League" route. 5 qualify directly for the playoff round, which comprises the teams who finished 4th in Spain (Villarreal), Germany (Mönchengladbach) and England (Man City), and the teams who finished 3rd in Portugal (Porto) and Italy (Roma). Those 5 play against the winners of the 5 ties in the third qualifying round, which feature the 3rd team from France (Monaco) plus the runners-up from Russia (Rostov), Ukraine (Shakhtar Donetsk), Netherlands (Ajax), Belgium (Anderlecht), Switzerland (Young Boys), Turkey (Fenerbahce), Greece (TBC - currently Panathinaikos), Czech Republic (Sparta Prague) and Romania (Steaua).

From those 15 teams, 5 will drop into the Europa League playoff round so could make the group stage with us, and 5 will drop straight into the EL group stage. All bar one of them (Rostov) have a higher coefficient rating than us.

Add to that, 12 of the teams already confirmed in the Europa League qualifying rounds also have higher coefficient ratings than us. Pretty sure we'll be in pot 3, with the possibility of pot 2 only if basically every playoff round tie was won by the lower-ranked team.

here is full seeding group stage

NB this includes teams who could get knocked out prior to reaching group stage and teams that may qualify for Champions League

As Steve has already said most likely we'll be in Pot 3, which is where we would have been last season

The first threads were about qualifying, my thread was about the competition, which was hijacked by a bunch of people discussing qualifying.

Tbh we went right up to losing to Midtjylland with all this detail last year including all of the teams in the CL and EL all through qualifying, and if I'm bored at half 1 in the morning again I might bother to do it again at some point. But probably not worth doing anything until the 3rd Qualifying Rounds or PlayOff round.

We were barely going to be in Pot 3 last year by the skin of our teeth, had we gone through. With the extra 0.75ish of a point this time around we'll probably be marginally better off, but more depends on which inexperienced sides fall out of the CL and which underdogs get through the EL knockout stages than anything much around our slightly better coefficient. The good news is that making the Group Stages already guarantees us a much better chance of a better coefficient next year:

"The associations' club coefficients rankings are based on the results of each association's clubs in the five previous UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League seasons. The rankings determine the number of places allocated to an association (country) in forthcoming UEFA club competition.

Points system

1. Each team gets two points for a win and one point for a draw (points are halved for matches in the qualifying and play-off rounds).

2. Clubs that reach the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals or final of the UEFA Champions League, or the quarter-finals, semi-finals or final of the UEFA Europa League, are awarded an extra point for each round. "

No we are not. We are 12th out of 15. The winner of the swiss cup could make us 12th out of 16 or 13th out of sixteen depending on who wins.

A majority of the clubs that have qualified for the 3rd playoff round have lower coefficients that we do. Admittedly, most of the clubs that drop in the from the Champions League to the group phase or the final playoff round will have higher coefficients so we will likely end up in the third pot where we would have been last year.

Uppsala is a great little University city, and actually closer to Arlanda airport than Stockholm - about 18 minutes by train. The match ground is in Solna, which has its own stop on the Uppsala - Arlanda - Stockholm line. (not that Im getting ahead of things...)

Would love to see the Saints back in Holland! I assume the seeded clubs won't play against each other so Feyenoord is out of the question. Ajax or AZ would be nice but their coeff is probably to high? That leaves Heracles which plays on artificial grass or is it turf?

We cannot be a top seed for the group stage because of the teams who will drop into the group stage from the Champions League playoff round, so while we probably wouldn't draw Feyenoord as their coefficient is not much higher than ours (so will probably be in the same pot), we could certainly draw AZ if they get through the qualifiers or Ajax if they get dumped in from the Champions League.

Thanks for the info Steve, let's hope it will be Ajax then. With Peter Bosz at the helm in Amsterdam it will be a fun game for the Saints...

On another note, there are only 11 non-CL-dropout slots left to fill in the competition now:

Group Stage

Swiss Cup winners - Sunday, Lugano v Zürich (strangely, the bottom two teams in the Swiss top flight)

Third Qualifying Round

3rd in Greek league - currently PAOK (3 games to play, finishes Tuesday 31st May)

Second Qualifying Round

Playoff winner in Belgium - Charleroi or Genk, playing over two legs tonight and on Sunday.

4th/5th in Greek league - currently Panionios (AEK Athens are 4th but have already qualified for 3QR as cup winners, and might yet get into the CL qualifiers)

7th in Romania - CS U Craiova, but depends on a CAS appeal by Dinamo Bucharest - verdict known by the end of May

2nd in Denmark - currently Sonderjyske, 3 points clear with two games to play. Midtjylland the other challenger.

First Qualifying Round

3rd in Denmark - currently Midtjylland

4th in Denmark - currently Brondby, 2 points clear of Aalborg.

4th in Bulgaria - currently Slavia Sofia, ahead on goal difference, one game to play on Saturday.

2nd in Moldova - title playoff match taking place on Sunday between Dacia Chisinau and Sheriff Tiraspol. Loser into the Europa League.

Luxembourg Cup winners - Mondorf-les-Bains v F91 Dudelange on Sunday

Joint 5th favourites to be outright winner come next May in Stockholm. Gotta be worth a tenner?

Obviously the teams dropping down from the champions league will massively sway the position of our placing later on.

Zürich have won the Swiss Cup today 1-0 and go straight into the group stages, however their coefficient is very close to ours (slightly higher at 17.7 v's our 16.7) so not likely that we'll be drawn against them

Weren't Zurich also relegated last week?

Shame that Lugano didn't win, I'd love to visit there although the Italian Swiss might not be so welcoming since Cortese departed.

Would be good to have a couple of domestic preseason games as well this year, Reading / Swindon away but most likely we'll do U.S. and Holland

Hadn't thought of that, but not being in the qualifiers will make quite a bit of difference in what they can do. Hope they don't overdo it though.

I'm probably going to do another Google map of the locations we could potentially go to. Not sure at what point to start it, no need to include all the qualifying round teams like last year, as there are loads.

Once Ive posted it up, is it possible for one of the admins to put the link in the OP, otherwise it will get lost in the thread.

It was a bit short lived last year; but the idea is to include the ground, hotels, bars transport links etc etc,

Is there any way of pre-empting the schedule before the draw based on our (prospective) pot?

Work won't give me matchday 3 off. Need Matchday 3 to be Home.

It seems to be 4 possibles and if you start at home or away you finish there as well.

HAHAAH and AHHAHA are good

AHAHHA and HAAHAH are bad.

Agreed, that would be handy. If we're a pot 3 team, would that set the fixtures a certain way?
