PEH is deluded if he thinks he is champions league material. Even more deluded if he  thinks he will  play in the CL with Everton who have are no better than Saints .Same goes for Spurs

we didn't lose which I had feared could happen with us playing same team so often. Yes we need to strengthen in many places to get a bench worth it's name, but first let's get this season over.

I live 200 miles north of Southampton. But that's only the Midlands, not north.

Understandable performance given how many changes were made.  Hopefully we can put out full strength teams in the remaining matches.  The big learnings are that we have little strength in depth ourside the current first 11.  Injuries to Djenepo and Boufal aren't helping and the youth players are still learning - Obafemi, Smallbone and Vokins - so will be inconsistent and may find the game passes them by sometimes, but they will develop with more game time.  Obafemi reminds me of Antonio when he was with us - powerful but lacking ball control.  If he develops as Antonio has we will have a great player in a few years.  Vestergaard and Hoj looked rusty as they have had relatively little game time and Hoj was playing out of position.  Perhaps it would have been better to swap him and JWP during the first half.  Not surprising that we played like strangers in the first half as there were so many changes.  Also Romeu's yellow would have clipped his wings a bit so we weren't as effective in the middle of the field.

Excellent turnaround in the second half.  Every part of the team seemed to benefit from the changes, not just the positions that the new players took up.  Again that shows how important our settled first 11 is.

He has been given loads of chances but please give me 3 examples when he changed the game enough to be picked as a starter the following game? He has based his career on one goal

JWP never showed tenacity, until very recently. Think you must be thinking of someone else. It was always what his game lacked in the early days, oh and pace, and tackling ability, and and and. Credit though recently he has changed and put many of these things right.

Genuine take from my long-ago uni days in Southampton. I was invited to stay with a friend in South Shields for a few days and another uni friend, who lived local to Southampton, agreed to keep me company.

As we passed Watford on the M1, he commented on how well we were doing: "Can't be long now. We're north of London!"

Vestertard can toss off too - what an aberration of a football player. He can shoot, but his game is to defend and he cannot defend against anyone. Hopefully he's out of the door ASAP.

Positives were KWP, really good impact when he came on - interesting use of him, coming in side - but he uses the ball so well, commits players and seems to make things happen. He has a low centre of gravity which means he can wiggle out of most challenges. I'm becoming sold, I'll be honest. Still wouldn't pay any more than 11m though.

If anything, this game highlighted that both Adams and Obafemi are not able substitutes for Ings - we really, really need actual competition for Ings in the summer. If he gets injured then we are dead.

A very good post and spot on for our current situation. PEH says he wants to play for a Champions League team. We will have to hope they haven't seem him play because if they have they won't want him. A player full of his own self-importance. Adams seemed a good buy but he hasn't adapted well to Premier League football and looks out of his depth to me. I have no idea how much Ralph will have at his disposal for buys in the transfer window but I would like to see him sign a couple of good, solid goal scorers. Saints have been fortunate that Ings has kept injury free because where else would 15-20 goals a season come from? Not Long that's for sure. Out with the old and in with the new and from the way Saints have played since lockdown dare we hope for a decent season?

If Ings  J Prowse and Redmond can play in all games since restart why not the rest of the  regular side. Best to have got 3 points int he bag yesterday and rested players for Bounmemouth.. I guess Manager thought Brighton were a soft touch.  Everyone praise Vestergarde a few games ago

Players recover at different rates and different positions require very different amounts of the pitch to cover. The club analyse each player's recovery and fitness after every game and bake assessments of whether they're ready to play again on the basis of medical science.

Pushing a player too early can cause damage and be counter-productive.

Saints improved when Che cam on to the pitch. More vigour.  He's like Long in some ways. Provides pace and distracts opposition defences,, though not netting himself.   We would be a weaker team without him.

Does he? He doesn't really look particularly quick to me. I'd say Obafemi and Long are notably quicker, Ings also looks quicker. Adams hold up play is good, but at the moment he isn't offering much else.

This.....plenty of discussion with my father in law re Che. I think there is a good player “In” there but it’s up to both Ralph to find it and for Che to show he wants it!   I like him but do accept father in law comments that he is slow and does not anticipate as much as he should......Maybe he has needed the season to settle/adjust following an obvious jump in playing level.

Also re: the changes, surely the idea of trying these players is that next season one or two will be rotated in at a time, rather than 5. Changing half the team will always weaken its strength and (importantly with how we play) it’s understanding of each other. To say we lack strength in depth is a bit harsh as any one player coming in to the usual 11 would probably be okay (like smallbone has been).

Au contraire, in the early days he harried and pressed very well, albeit without having much tackling ability as you say.

I've just joined this forum. I live in New Zealand and am not an ex-pat. I was brought up on the All Blacks but would watch MOD and first saw Le Tissier. Been following you since then. I don't have the intergenerational passion that many of you will have but I just like the way this Club operates. It's easy to be critical of certain performances but, overall, they have salvaged a season where they lost a record 0-9 so on and up for the next one.

Exactly my thoughts and I saw Che come back and was prepared to give him a chance and I hope the guy would boost his clearly lacking self confidence. I’ve been quite defensive for him but v Brighton he just showed he’s not got it. I’m sure that’s down to really low confidence and a poor match can’t sum up a player’s calibre  but he is clearly a player that suffers with confidence and he just looks poor. 
 

Højbjerg  I have never rated since his dreadful cup final miss against United from the outset. He can’t shoot aside from one won wonder goal and his passing is woeful as one attack against Brighton displayed when he passed straight back to the opposition which is deadly and he would’ve cost us a match against a team like Man City. Romeo is twice the player

Talking of wonder goals, how unlucky was Lurch (Vestergaard) to have save of the season deny him? That shot had everything & would’ve been goal of the season. Power, precision, swerve. Incredible effort. Incredible save.

Good post and I agree entirely with every aspect. Especially the slow to react mindset of Højbjerg whom is a dreadful passer of the ball and can’t shoot. Therefore, sell him to Spurs for a rip off fee as recompense to f*** off Levy for constantly stitching us with transfers & sell on clauses. Then I hope he plays even worse for them. Both Vestergaard & Højbjerg are painfully slow. Che was poor against Brighton but I do think he ‘might’ develop but it’s very 50-50 because he does a lot that really doesn’t breed confidence. Anyone saying he’s quick is deluded. He needs gametime & an arm around the shoulder. Playing him and then dropping him after one bad game like Brighton won’t do his confidence any favours so include him in your plans Ralph if you see him as part of our future. Don’t drop him for long periods as that won’t do his head any good. I’m personally not sure he’s got it. 

We need a RB, CM... I’d like to see us shift one of the young strikers (Che or Obafemi) and one of our goalkeepers to replace them with better or give Forster a run. I’d like to see Harrison Reed back. Fulham fans love him and I was always a fan from the outset but he’s never seemed to curry favour for whatever reason. Maybe he upset someone in academy.  It is odd though as we have seen Ralph persist or try other players from the Academy of lesser quality but not Reed. I think he is tenacious midfielder and our closing down, high pressure, pressing style of football would suit him down to the ground.

The thing about Harrison Reed is if he wasn’t our player and we were Signing him bringing in one of the best defensive midfielders in the championship to replace Hojbjerg we’d probably be over the moon. I think Ralph sees him as Hojbjergs replacement. We could do a lot worse.

I really like Harrison Reed and I’m excited to see how he fares. I just didn’t see him as a direct replacement which he may not be. Who knows. it’s good irrespective
