It would be strange to support him through all the injuries, to then let him leave once he looks fit and sharp. But equally he could sign, then pick up a bad one immediately. Weigh up the risks. I think he's worth the gamble.

If he plays the rest of the season without injury, plays entire 90+ minutes and performs well/scores goals, then it will be hard to release him for free. It may be harder for us to ignore his previous injury problems than a new suitor, which means he may get a better offer elsewhere, but if he's scored vital goals for us in the run in, then we'll no doubt have recency bias and want to keep him.

I dont think I've ever wanted a player, with the exception of Pahars, to stay fit and earn a contract extension more.

He's just what we need in my opinion.

He’s not even fully fit or had a run of games to be at his best, but he’s by far our best option. If he can play through til the end of the season then it’s a no brainer to keep him IMO, as long as the club realise he’ll probably always need to be managed minutes-wise and we’d need another proper option up top.

Unless Larin proves his fitness, builds on his initial promise and we sign him permanently.

I presume a new contract can be written with a low base salary and achievable bonuses when he plays. 

Stephens’ new contract was a lower base salary but longer term.

If you were Ross Stewart, with his past few years of injuries, would you risk yourself at the tail end of the season with no contract on the table? What probability would you put on him picking up yet another injury that keeps him out long term, risking him not getting a contract offer over the summer and leaving him without any income / with reduced income? Obviously its a complete unknown - but i wouldn't put money any meaningful money on him not getting injured before the summer.

If saints want to keep him going with good form and full commitment for the promotion chase, they need to give him an extension for at least another year - otherwise they're asking him to risk his livelihood to potentially get us promoted and not even have a contract for next season to enjoy the spoils. If we don't, its probably worth more to him to take it easy and show he can stay fit, than it is to break himself chasing a few goals - his next contract will be tied to whether clubs think he can stay fit at least as much as it will his goalscoring prowess - everyone knows he's a good striker for this level.

We hold a one year extension option I think so don’t think we need to be making any decision before the end of the season. Ross needs to prove he can stay fit for this run of games and earn that new contract. There may be an option to reduce wages and increase duration but that’s one to speak about closer to the end of the season. No question, if he can stay fit, he’s a great striker at this level. Big if.

For the sake of his mental wellbeing, I hope he goes on a run without any injury complications. 

Getting out of bed without jolting my fucking neck feels like a win some days right now. When your whole career is based on being fit, must be a big burden to carry at times.
