Shame but hardly surprising because he's clearly too good for the Championship.

Like Tyler to Everton this is likely to be a stepping stone for Fernandes - he's still young so plenty of time for moves to bigger clubs. This probably makes sense for where he is in his development now. 1

Saint Fan CaM Posted yesterday at 08:41 Posted yesterday at 08:41 Bugger - kind of expected and the new midfield signings signalled it was end game, but it’s still a bit gutting to know our best player is leaving. Leaves a huge hole in squad quality.

Osvaldorama Posted yesterday at 08:46 Posted yesterday at 08:46 Good luck to him. Always been a model pro and a very good performer. I think he can flourish into a great player. Not sure that West Ham is the right club for him to do that, as they’re a bit of a basket case, but that’s his prerogative. 1
Saint_clark Posted yesterday at 08:49 Posted yesterday at 08:49 £42million is low. At least he'll fail at West Ham, they love taking good players and stalling their careers. 1 1
skintsaint Posted yesterday at 08:50 Posted yesterday at 08:50 Good money, did well to get 2 league goals and 4 assists in our team last season. He might also have one eye on the World Cup next year and a good season in the PL won't go unnoticed to make the squad. 1

Both bigger clubs than Everton and West Ham.
die Mannyschaft Posted yesterday at 09:05 Posted yesterday at 09:05 Off to WHU, oh well that means more draws unless we can replace him. £40m
OldNick Posted yesterday at 09:07 Posted yesterday at 09:07 Just now, die Mannyschaft said: Off to WHU, oh well that means more draws unless we can replace him. £40m To be fair the games hes played this season he hasnt quite been at it, on Saturday I thought he was poor for his standard. If a new player arrives who is hungry he will probably more than replace what Matty has done this season so far
Colinjb Posted yesterday at 09:11 Posted yesterday at 09:11 Ok, more money. At least it closes the chapter. Thanks for showing some promise in our worst season. Enjoy your next relegation battle.
Toadhall Saint Posted yesterday at 09:11 Posted yesterday at 09:11 Good luck - you’ll need it at WHU.
musesaint Posted yesterday at 09:12 Posted yesterday at 09:12 Not sure if this is good business or shortsighted? I suppose much will depend on how we spend the money, together with the Dibling funds? 2

Hugely impressive debut season coming from Portugal as a 19/20 year-old to the Premier League and performing consistently week-in week-out is no mean feat. He gave his all every match he played in, even though an equally talented local lad that had been brought up through the academy had given up halfway through the season and sulked for the rest of it. Good luck Matty, I wish you nothing but the best and a sparkling career for your future clubs and country (unless you are playing against Saints or England). 8
Andrew Watson Posted yesterday at 09:19 Posted yesterday at 09:19 Good luck Mateus you have been class on and off the field. 5

Saint Scott Posted yesterday at 09:24 Posted yesterday at 09:24 £41m [£38m + £3m addons], 15% sell on according to The Athletic
qwertyell Posted yesterday at 09:26 Posted yesterday at 09:26 Guardian (Jacob Steinberg) reporting £35m, £3m in add-ons, and 15% sell on clause.
skintsaint Posted yesterday at 09:27 Posted yesterday at 09:27 Hammers offered 30m, we wanted 50m. Met in the middle. Standard negotiating 😅 1
Spoonman Posted yesterday at 09:32 Posted yesterday at 09:32 Strange move if you believe there were up to 13 clubs interested in him. Will be a long slog for West Ham this year, with high chance of new manager(s) who may not fancy him.

kitch Posted yesterday at 09:52 Posted yesterday at 09:52 Fuck sake, I'm gutted about this one. Dibling I could take or leave, but this one leaves us notably weaker as a team. 2

Dibling I could take or leave, but this one leaves us notably weaker as a team. Fully agree this is the only player I am upset about losing. We were a disgrace last season and Matty was the standout player that has so much potential and a long contract. However, you can’t keep players that don’t want to be here, so we take the money and spend it on Azaz, Jander and a winger.
LuckyNumber7 Posted yesterday at 09:55 Posted yesterday at 09:55 Gutted to lose Matty but have been resigned to it all summer. He was a shining light in a sea of shit last season, and top class attitude. Shame we got relegated and couldn't enjoy him for another couple of years. Just need to try and spend the money well to improve the team as a whole, which it now looks like we're doing. Thanks and good luck in your future career Matty.
Fabrice29 Posted yesterday at 09:57 Posted yesterday at 09:57 First couples of pages of this thread is quite funny how similar to most transfer threads start. ‘Another promising signing rather than any idea if he’s any good on the actual grass’ - Somebody has found a message board or twitter for some fan responses - talk of can he play in goal - is it done yet? questions. All the usual stuff and an argument about Cedric.
benjii Posted yesterday at 09:58 Posted yesterday at 09:58 (edited) He seems to be a good lad with a great attitude and he's mature for his age and is consistent. But I don't see him as a top, top player. He's not great at tackling, he's not the most physical, he can finish but isn't Lampard/Scholes prolific, he can pass but isn't Pirlo... he's basically a slightly more sophisticated Hojbjerg. He's not creative enough to be a number 10 and not physical enough to play much deeper in England. He should milk West Ham for whatever he can then head to Spain / Italy in a couple of years. I would sooner have Dibling. Edited yesterday at 09:59 by benjii 1 1
Winnersaint Posted yesterday at 10:05 Posted yesterday at 10:05 (edited) Good player, good luck with WHU, you'll need it is much as you did last season. Bought as potential made a good profit, tis the way of the footballing world today. Next! Edited yesterday at 10:05 by Winnersaint 1
Whitey Grandad Posted yesterday at 10:20 Posted yesterday at 10:20 The way I see it, if promising young players can see us as a stepping stone to a higher level that should make it easier to attract such talent. 1
SNSUN Posted yesterday at 10:24 Posted yesterday at 10:24 Good luck Matty, really was one of the only players that kept going last season. He's a loss to us but we were never holding on to him this summer. He's Prem ready and he'll be a good signing for WHam. Now SR need to bring in a couple of good signings this window to numb this feeling.

Saint Scott Posted yesterday at 11:25 Posted yesterday at 11:25 Not sure if this is rubbish, but poor of Fernandes if true.

James G Posted yesterday at 11:31 Posted yesterday at 11:31 I think just take the money, it's a good price Part of me thinks he looked better than he was because the rest of the team set a low standard. And, any slightly creative player will stand out in the team. I think he'll be easily replaceable, and chances are, his heart wasn't in it this season anyway 1
