Everton 2-0 Saints - Match Thread

Meh, like a friendly. Saints are everyone’s friendly in this league. It was loud in the ground for the first few minutes and last few minutes, but silent in between which I found surprising. 

Glad to see the end of that ground, fucking shocking record at Goodison.

Expect that's a few more euros for Valenciennes then.  Was nice to see Welington giving Ashley Young some gip. Was good to see Stewart get in front of his man and not get his header on target. He might be ok in the league below but I can't see him being a top level striker. Robinson looked to have a little about him. Liked Archer's defending and even a bit of something when he's given space (again, in a competitive PL game, I don't think he'll cut it. 

 

Looking forward to breaking more records in our last home game and the (I really, really hope) mass clear out. I'd say of the dross but that's rather a large proportion of what we've got. Let's hope Vardy gets his 200th goal and that's all that's talked about this season, while we go under the radar.

Seems like Rusk doesn't like to attack opposition goals.

Favourite time of the season now as this season now becomes erased and hope and belief begin to enter my veins like meth as the new manager announcement comes closer then the transfer window.

Three managers couldn’t get a tune out of this squad. Suggests it personnel more than anything. Can’t wait for a rebuild and these waste of space players depart.

I haven't the faintest clue why anybody ever thought this. Genuinely not a Scooby why anyone would think one of our youth team coaches, who's only ever managed at National League level, would get more of a tune out of this abysmal collection of players than Martin or Juric.

For a city beset with the tragedy of Hillsborough the arrangements leaving the stadium were shocking and someone needs to give their head a wobble.

The explanation of 'to stop Everton fans getting into the stadium' as an excuse for stewards in the stadium telling us where to leave with no idea what was happening and the Police holding people in causing crushes and frustration is pathetic.

The Police had ample time and means at their disposal to allow a safe and timely exit for away fans.  It doesn't take Einstein to figure out there were thousands of Everton fans outside who may try and get into the ground after the game and several thousand Saints fans who wanted to leave the ground.  To have five Policeman try and manage a single person exit is the sort of incompetence that means people get hurt.  Idiots.

What other fanbase would stomach the relentless embarrassment we’ve been handed season after season? Record-breaking levels of failure, and we respond with polite applause and grim little jokes. Is that seriously the standard now? Is that what we’re teaching the next generation of Saints fans?

Where’s the fucking pride? Where’s the outrage? How low do we have to sink before someone finally says enough is enough?

My thoughts of the today

• Great scenes before the game - brought back memories of the home game against WBA last season
• Shame Goodison is going but it really is a shit hole
• A very special send off by Everton after the game - so many great players paraded around the pitch - Peter Beardsley looked so ill, Southall has put on some weight!
• The Everton fans must be the friendliest supporters in the land - loads stopped for a chat & wished Saints luck n the Championship

Only damper was the teams performance BUT that was expected!!

I didn't get 50 meters from my city centre hotel wearing my Saints shirt before someone offered me £200 for my ticket... and that happened numerous times outside the ground too!  Even after the match some twat wanted to buy my shirt so they could try to sneak back in... unbelievable.  i appreciate the significance of the day for Everton fans, but the arrogance of them thinking any Saints fan would give up their ticket.  Were any Everton fans caught inside the Saints end?  Otherwise, the home fans were friendly enough in the crush before kickoff.  Exiting the ground was a joke though.

You are right, Martin did such a bad job of assembling a competitive team that he completely fucked is. All of his signings are horrific.

Correct, he should never have been in charge of recruitment last summer. It was a ridiculous void of accountability and responsibility for a PL club to find themselves opening.

It was a great occasion to be part of, spent quite a bit of time outside the ground pre-match taking it all in , was disappointed Everton didn't all come on the pitch at the end, was all a bit flat, didn't stay for the farewell ceremony instead those of us that left had to battle with the local constabulary to be let out, they were virtually letting one at a time go to stop Everton fans sneaking in. 

Thinking about it wish our 3k fans all stayed and sung Matty , Matty Fernandes non-stop throughout their ceremony just for a laugh

Wish I hadn’t bothered yesterday as the players clearly aren’t. I watched the half time warm up of the subs with interest as it was right in front of us. The coach was taking the players through what he wanted but the players were making little to no effort to replicate what he was doing. It stank of ‘I can’t be arsed’ and it’s that attitude that then translates itself onto the pitch. There’s no pride, no passion and I honestly think none of them care.

I was on the left side of the upper tier towards the front and there were about a dozen in there at the post match ceremony.

Intersting what Fernandes said after the game about being fitter (something like that) about training.

RM didnt prepare us physically for the season, he didnt get players in who were anywhere near up to playing in this league. Sadly the muscle memory of the tippy tappy stuff is so ingrained now the players dont know how to play other ways, like forward!!!

Thought we got better after the subs. Clear that we started a bunch of players that cannot wait to leave and do not care anymore. the likes of Stewart, smallbone, Sanda and Robinson all showed they can probably do a job for us next year. Woods didn't impress me at all, although possibly harsh on him given the shit show he was playing in the middle of.

THB, Sanda, Edwards may not be the worst set of CB's next season. Certainly young and with a chance to grow and improve if they get to play regularly.

Martin, Juric, Rusk and Lallana have achieved exceptional things in the PL, bettered only by Derby. I would expect a special SR light show as well for them.
