I’ll start it then

welcome to St Mary’s Will.

comes across very well in what I’ve heard in various podcasts, has an impressive track record in Belgium and France. Probably wouldn’t have been top of list for most of us and something of a gamble but feel quite positive about it.

critical appointment from SR, let’s hope they’ve got this one right

Welcome onboard Will. From the little I've read and heard it seems like he's got his head screwed on and he'll deliver some much needed pragmatism.

It will be interesting to see if we abandon 3 at the back in favour of 4-3-3 - I can only hope so!

Watched the High Performance podcast featuring him the other day. Came across as introspective without being arrogant. I like that he is prepared to adapt to get a win. Get the impression he will connect well the squad. Of course that's just how he comes across. Will he be a winner in the Championship? I don't know, but this is the first Sport Republic appointment I'm overall positive about. I'll get behind him. Welcome Will and good luck, you have a big year ahead.

Meets the most important of the basic criteria.

Has managed in a top 5 league, leaving the club in a better place than when he started. Will has also done this with multiple clubs in a top 5 league. He has moved around a bit, but the circumstances have been varied.

While UEFA stats put the Belgian League at 8th, Opta have it in their league strength at 6th to 7th. His spell there went well.

While he seems surprised the phone rings the second he's available, it shows how highly rated he's been in those countries.

Tactically adaptable, and considers being a high performance manager as a winning manager. Music to our ears (even if some of the formations are 3 at the back).

His coaching and communication skills are highly regarded.

He is coming into a side weaker in almost every position since SR took over. It's a side that's also weaker than the one that was promoted under Martin. As much is riding on SR finally deciding on their goal, and recruiting accordingly. Despite their investment, every manager so far has been limited by SR failing to get key targets over the line.

He's got some good ideas and certainly won't stand for underperforming players he is young and hungry for more success... It's either a master stroke or another serious misjudgedment.

Noone is going to turn an unfit team with an inground losing mentality and an poor attitude overnight we need to give him time 15 games or so before we judge... It is a gamble whatever way you look at it but maybe we need to be bold who knows! .... The only thing that im not too keen on is insisting his brothers get roles... Not sure how impartial that working relationship will be, welcome to saints will all the best you are going to need it!

Hope he is adequately backed by the club.  Hopefully we’ve seen the end of lazy fuckers on the pitch and pointless tippy tappy shite.

Yep, that’s the essence of my feeling. Think he’s proved he’s got the skills, knowledge and charisma to lead a successful campaign at a reasonably high level and with significant constraints placed in his way. However, it’s going to be Spors and the recruitment team that determines how well he can turn around the shambles of this season. Losing the players that could actually make a difference in his system next season (Rambo, KWP, Fernandes) could be very telling indeed.

Ah, c'mon @Paul Chuckle, it's important to give support and focus on the positives, now he's here. I didn't once let slip about the picture from Johannes Spors' meeting.

"And should Mr. Still prove to be as short-lived as the rest of our managerial appointments, we have a brighter, younger coach in the wings...

...well, it will be the hospital wings during his birth. But he'll be a top coach!"

Worked well for Ronald Koeman

Well it could be worse but im actually encouraged from what ive heard about him. Pressing football, organised defence, uses the wings a lot, wants his players playing fwd diagonal balls as much as possible, encourages his players to take on defenders to open up areas, likes the 4231/433 formation but will switch to a 352 formation when against certain opposition, much better than play my way or your out. Looking fwd to next season now.

Can I have 5th November and Fabrice29 in the "well there's a surprise - he's not as good as Martin, is he?" sweepstake? ;)

YouTube wouldn't host the follow up A&E video showing where they removed his microphone from, but it would have made you smile. 🙂

Welcome Will. Personally I think it is a great appointment for a Championship club.

But....

The recruitment this summer is much more important. No point being ambitious with the choice of manager, if they're left to work with a squad of losers. Hopefully when the first mini transfer window opens on 1st June we'll see some movement (both out as well as in)

Oh, does he have to try that? 🙂

I get the point - for clarity convince 2 players to stay and convince the remainder to leave!

Welcome Will, as i said the other week i think he has like Rohl hugh upside as a coach and at least he wont have his better players sold underneath him every jan like at Lens and Rehims.

Manager very important - getting the right players for his system essential.

You're going to get the coach of our rival team, because here at Valenciennes, we don't like Lens very much, Will has done a pretty good job, especially at Stade de Reims, at Lens it was a bit more complicated because from my point of view, he's a coach with potential and I hope he'll do a good job with you.

Excited to see how this plays out. A young coach with something to prove who has outperformed expectations wherever he has been so far. Couple with a new backroom team to find him the players to make it all work. Welcome, Will!

I'm onboard with this, thought it was going to be Rohl from all the chat but Will Still's approach sounds an improvement on the recent sufferings - on paper at least. For now, my vigour has been reinvigored!

But I can never get this little beauty out of my head from Les Reed describing what awaited with Pellegrino "exciting, attacking, high-intensity football"...............

Pleased with Still becoming our new manager. Let’s hope Spors can give him the players he wants and we can shift some others.

Looking forward to the new season.

Interesting comment on Rohl here:

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl was previously linked with the Saints job, but the compensation package to move to a club within the same division was thought to be too expensive.

i think he also wants a top league job as quoted elsewhere but interesting if we did chose Still due to compensation values.

Has he signed yet? etc.

Fab says he has. Everyone is reporting it will be formally announced today.

I’ve said for the last week or so he strikes me as the kind of person everyone was a little apprehensive of at first (due to experience); but if you saw him going to Leicester or another top end Championship club you’d be saying “smart move”.

He comes across very well, seems tactically flexible, and seems to have a good record working with young players. We need a blend of experience as well as youth in the squad for this season.

I’m certainly more excited by this appointment than not.

Some will be disappointed that the Lord and saviour Danny Rohl hasn’t come - but he clearly thinks he is bigger than he is already.

Very excited to see what the summer holds, hopefully a major clearout, but by getting him in the door early hopefully it means better preparation and a better season.

It feels like a good one. Looks like he values players and their personalities which our squad needs and his record of galvanising groups is a good one. The idea that we came away from a manager who had a connection with his players was always daft.

Tactically he’s used all the right buzz words in the MNF performance. ‘Adaptable’ being a favourite and playing to the audience and like Spors he seems to favour good physicality so its good to have that joined up thinking again that bought us success in this league last time. Will see how that manifests itself but I hope we don’t neglect the technical side like we did under Ralph by the end. Early impressions of Still are that we won’t.

Good stuff all around and looking forward to it. As has been mentioned though, recruitment is key.

Hopefully he wont need to. With KWP, Ramsdale, Bednarek, Aribo, Fernandes, THB almost certain to be gone, Big Les back to Chelsea,  and very possible Tall Paul, Arnstrong, Downes and Dibling leaving the squad numbers will be drastically reduced. He'll be bringing in at the very least half a new starting line-up so, players coming in with all the attributes needed may finally shake this soft boy "son-in-law" crap thats hung over the team for far too long.

Of course we'll still be left with a lot of crap nobody will want but doesnt mean they will be starters come August.

Obviously it will take time for them to gel, adapt to his style if some of the players arent used to it but signs of recovery should be pretty obvious early on, results will then hopefully follow. I am not expecting to go straight back up, and tbh I'm not sure in the scheme of things that would be a disaster. Failing to go up the following season or at worst season 3 would be however.

Good that this is done so early in the summer. Looks like an interesting appointment.

One big difference to recent managerial appointments....... we've not had fans from his past teams post here telling us how shit he is.

I take that as a positive.

That is possibly less likely as his former clubs are French and Belgian rather than Luton and Swansea.
