Not sure if this has been done before, but have you ever had an irrational hatred of one of our players? Doesn't have to be necessarily due to being shit, just something that you didn't like about them. I had a dislike of Neil Heaney back in the day. My girlfriend at the time thought he was the digs bollocks looking wise and it wound the fuck out of me!

Bednarek, just constantly blames others when he’s basically been useless since he joined, bar the one season he moved down a level.

Mark Hughes. Totally arrogant. Too lazy to play as a striker and dropped into midfield where it was above him to track back. Wasted chance after chance trying to score worldies when an easy goal was on if he passed.

I was in the upper East Stand and got a perfect view of the player, we all thought there was a competition for any Sunday leaque player to play for 5 mins on the Dell.

Dejan Lovren. Refused to return for preseason and declared he already felt like a Liverpool player whilst still under contract at Saints.
IIRC he got subbed off early on in our 3-2 comeback win against them after crumbling under the abuse he was getting from the Northam.

Chuck VVD in there for the same reasons. But at least he was actually good.

Adam Lallana will sit at the top for being a dirty cortese poison pusher

Mark Wright got up his arse before leaving and rightly got shite when playing here back in the day

Jack Stephens

Wesley Hoedt

Danny Fox clearly loved himself

Most recently Sulemana only looked interested against the friendly against Liverpool in our last relegation.

Bella Kotchap always looked like he wanted to come off with an injury in our last relegation season .

Both players then went on strike in the championship before Sulemana had to accept nobody wanted him and Kotchap got a loan move.

I Can’t believe the Hero’s welcome Bella Kotchap got when he came on as a sub. Embarrassing.

Van Dijk when he sulked around the pitch against Leicester at home just before his move to Liverpool.

I'd forgotten about that fucking stupid standing ovation ABK received , in his absence for some reason alot of  plonkers amongst us decided he was the saviour and Martin's refusal to play him was holding us back, despite the fact he'd hardly played a game of football for two years. Unbelievable, hope we can finally say auf weidersehen to young Armel this summer

David Speedie and Stuart Ripley - two Blackburn players who clearly did not want to be at SFC.

David Lee - Branfoot’s first signing which foretold the horrors to come

Wesley Hoedt - how clueless/on the sauce does a DoF and Head of Recruitment have to be to believe a Lazio squad player is worth £17m, £30m in today’s money? Very is the answer, ponderous, reluctant to attack the ball, poor distribution. Fulham away was one of the worst top flight displays by a Saints footballer.

Mario Lemina - if Hoedt was a £1.7m player where the Chuckle Bros put the wrong decimal on the cheque, Mario ability-wise was the real deal. Could have played for any club in the world. Attitude-wise, as bad as we’ve had - more 3 points for passing red lights than he ever won on the pitch. Let Wolves down abysmally too after they supported him through bereavement - captain crap for them.

Nigel Quashie - the one player supporters at both ends of the M27 can agree on.

Lovren and VVD - striking muppets, although the latter is a class player, Dejan so so as Toby showed the next season by comparison.

Kenwyne Jones - another striking shit, and we got a better player in exchange in Stern John. Good athlete but couldn’t trap a bag of cement and controlled it as far as he kicked it. Allegedly caused loads of trouble at Stoke.

Carlton Palmer - another with zero first touch. Very effective first season but fell out with people not least MLT and ended up training alone.

ABK - a small budget Wesley Hoedt mixed with some Kenwyne Jones.

Gavin Bazunu - nothing against him personally, I just felt anything aimed at his goal went in. His wretched spell at Standard underscored this in capital bold.

Paul Bennett, used to see her was in the team and fell like going home.

There are plenty who fit that bill over the years.

For me there are many who I haven’t wanted to see near the first team. Two mentioned on here are David Lee, and Bazunu. But not rating them hasn’t lead to an irrational hatred that the OP mentioned ( it might do for others of course).

There are also players whose performances or conduct have lead to a real dislike, Hoedt prime example, and also VVD.

But the stand out irrational hatred is largely players I never expected or wanted to see playing for us, and when they did the feeling didn’t improve. Notably, David Speedie, Mark Hughes, Carlton Palmer and possibly Dennis Wise.

Lemina is on the fringes of that group.

How did we get this far without mentioning Elyonoussi? (Probably spelt it wrong.)

My heart would sink every time he was in the side.

Nah! I loved him, had a bit of class about him.

Alan McLoughlin - record signing, absolutely crap, went to the Skates - suddenly turned into a footballer.

That's not an irrational dislike, to be fair. Lovren was a cunt.

How have we got this far without anyone mentioning Osvaldo?

Good question - is a player more dislikable for not being able to do what the club signed them to do for good money and wages - Wesley Hoedt, David Lee, Lee Todd, Gavin Bazunu, Guido Carrillo - when they are clearly ability-wise League One players (Hoedt probably Championship tbf but never PL in a million years) or is that the manager, DoF and club scouts who should take the flak and it isn’t the players’ fault?

Or are the players who are plenty good enough and have a dreadful attitude - Osvaldo, Lemina - the ones we should really dislike?

He was a frustrating player whilst with us, but there seemed an inevitability that our first £1m player would turn out that way.

Not sure why it didn’t work out, but the player we bought had a fairly free role at Swindon, he was their ‘main man’ and attacks were channelled through him (some would now describe him as a ‘No 10’ role). When he joined us he was curbed a bit, and as I recall played wide right. Didn’t work.

No great surprise that in a lower division team and perhaps more freedom to play his way,he recovered some of his previous form.

This I think, and the OP did mention 'irrational dislike'. I can't get upset with players who end up out of their depth and just aren't very good. Paul Moody from Waterlooville, for example, who the club took a losing punt on.

But players who don't put the effort in are towards the top on my list. Has David Speedie been mentioned yet?

*Trigger warning alert*

I wouldn't necessarilly describe it as irrational but for the low talent/effort ratio Ainsley Maitland‑Niles takes some beating for me

Holgate ??
Although perhaps that was just a fail based on talent alone, rather than effort.

I can still hear the crackle of his brain melting on his debut. "Manager insists on short pass...career training says no....manager insists on short pass...malfunction...ball given away...malfunction..."
