I was hoping he'd go to Leicester, where Martin would start him, and under who he did really well. Financial troubles, but a player who is such a good fit, it seems daft not to try and sign him. Of course, Will may look at the chances of Russ still being there in 2 months, and realise he'd then be trapped in L1. 1

Their window was an absolute car crash, they screwed it up so badly that they finished with only 18 senior players in their squad and only one recognised centre forward. They’re seriously talking about having to get 40 year old free agent Vardy in until January, or playing Alcaraz as no. 9 because other than Barry they don’t have any other options. Absolute carnage. 1 2

When he’s part of a central three, and has the likes of Flynn Downes to do his physical work, he’s very good. But cannot play in a central two, doesn’t have an adult physique. It’s why, combined with his injury problems which are probably linked, he hasn’t got a club. Whoever signs him, like Stewart, does so where he hasn’t had a pre-season. Huge risk. Whoever does sign him, and hope someone does, sends him to the gym to bulk up, not see a football for 8 weeks, and be in contention November onwards once he’s done the neccessary physical work to be able play in central midfield and be independent. bpsaint Posted yesterday at 14:11 Posted yesterday at 14:11 "Our main goal for this transfer window is not to make money, it's to make at least the same quality if not better team for the next season," he told BBC Radio Solent. More bollocks from Sport Republic then. "On the other hand, I think we have a very capable scouting team, and we are monitoring a huge number of players." I guess they weren’t scouting any big strikers that can hold the ball up. Or Centre Backs. 2

He’d have to be on a fairly limited contract in my book given his injury record. I’d be interested to know his availability at Sheff Utd last season.
Bobsmith Posted 11 hours ago Posted 11 hours ago I'm willing to give the new joiners time, but then we need to be smarter about how we deploy them. If we start our best team and then chuck on five subs, the drop off in quality can be pretty massive. Surely there's a better balance to be found by mixing and matching, so we always have a blend of our best players and the new lads on the pitch. It also makes me wonder whether certain players just work better with others. Would Mbama look better playing alongside Scienza or Larin and Dobbin, for example? Maybe it's less about whether individual players are good enough and more about finding the combinations that actually get the best out of them. I think we've got a strong midfield when Jander is back, and the defence is TBD pending Abbott but is probably fine, along with GK. RW is basically the same as last season, while LW is similar with Scienza and Edozie. So really, it's striker where we're weaker for depth, and unfortunately that's probably the one position where you can least afford to be short. It's up to the manager now to work out how we get a tune out of Mbama. If he can't, then try someone else and find another way to keep the goals coming from the rest of the team. 2

Horrible Steptoe fucker, but I would have taken him at Saints on a ‘trial basis’ given our current self-inflicted deprivation up front - he scored goals in Serie A last year, and will score goals in this league!

Can't think of another club in the championship who need to do the same (but will just dither) though... personally I’d rather we had a weaker squad than spending an extra million or two on players we need at the start of the season based on pure speculation. It makes no sense to over pay for players. I’d rather keep our powder dry when we have proof that we are weak on certain positions then we can go for it in January and sign key players as clubs will know we won’t be bulled into overpaying so will DEFINITELY not try and hold us to ransom then.
