We’d now be top, if not for the points deduction farce.

Preston and Derby up next - 6 points from those and surely we will be in or around the automatics. Then Sheffield United.....then the biggest game of the Millennium.

9 points before the Boro and Wolves fixtures please.

We’d be top if we could have finished our chances against Bolton and West Brom, and didn’t get shite results at Lincoln and Watford. We need to let go of the minus 4 and start taking responsibility for our league position.

Yeah I’m pretty confident we’d be top if we’d won every game this season

It's still worth keeping in mind that it's without the -4 that reflects how we're doing on the pitch, which is now better than anyone else so far this season.

Perhaps everybody will get extra  confidence from the fact that on form on the pitch we would be top. If we play well enough we will get the points we need.

6 points separating top and 10th.

What a league.

So much better than the PL

Incidentally the bottom 4 teams in PL are all playing in the bloated European competitions. Ironic if that is what fucks them and Coventry, Hull and Ipswich all survive

So people can now stop bleating on that our away form will cost us automatic promotion.

Shhhhhh! You mustn't mention the 4 point deduction.

I know we’ve slipped up in a few games and so have missed the opportunity to overcome the -4 points already. However, after all the uncertainty surrounding Tonda and having to pick ourselves back up to go again, to be on top in points earned (on GD) is fantastic.

Managing through without Jander, Larin getting injured when league top scorer and struggling to deal with spygate noise (losing first game back and last game before FA decision is no coincidence). I’ll take it.

Tonda has averaged title points over his first year in charge and January provides an opportunity to further strengthen.

Boro were awful tonight. Their fans are in melt down and even questioning King Kim who again looked ready to burst into tears at the end 🙂

Can we rename our new defender Kevin Schadenfreude.

Yeah, given the circumstances to only be 4 points off top at this stage is pretty good going. It's going to be a much tighter league than it has been in recent seasons, that's for sure.

Which I think has always been what we need it to be in the circumstances.

Boro looked terrible tonight without Lankshear, be nice if he’s out for a while. I don’t particularly rate wolves either, they’ve scraped through most games and any time they’ve come against anyone near the top, they’ve dropped points.

We’ve had the chances to do that though that’s what frustrates me more than the minus 4. If the owners had given Tonda the tools needed to succeed there’s no reason we couldn’t have been top right now.

Thinking like that ignores the points we have picked up due to luck or opponents' performances or having a good day going our way that we might easily otherwise have dropped. Full points away at West Ham and with 10 men against Pompey immediately spring to mind.

It's never been the case that football always goes how it's expected to.

Hellberg crying: is it too late to lodge an appeal against the only 4 points deduction with FA now?

What was wrong with Lankshear? Back ache from carrying Boro?

Heard it was a hamstring injury from over celebrating in a previous game.

When was the last time we lost a player that way?

Its a brilliant league isn't it, so many teams in the mix, Skates starting to look like genuine play off contenders

Wolves seem to have a knack of picking up wins, good bet for a top 2 spot

How are skates so high? They are shite!

it is a great league I don’t really get why they changed the play off format but I guess it keeps a lot more teams in the mix. Top without the -4 after only 14 games is good going.

That’s exactly why they did it. Not that dramatic a change though as 3rd of 4th stays same format - two legged semis. Not overly concerned if a team that came 6th gets knocked out by 7th and makes it to the semi final.

Can you imagine if a team finishing 8th 25 points behind 3rd ended up being.promoted?

Will mean less teams on the beach end of season so get why theyve done it

Would be carnage.

Semis would also be good as at least one of the fixtures would be midweek and no chance of a bubble.

I've often wondered what they'd do. No chance of any sort of bubble, no chance of it not being on the Saturday of the bank holiday weekend. Imagine 35,000 from each team scattered all across London, it would be a complete and utter warzone.

In our 14 games, we've played 9 of the top 13 teams - excluding us that's essentially the top half. We are unbeaten across those games.

This includes WHU, WBA, and Brum away - i don't think there will be many sides that take 5 points over those 3 away games.

By any measure, that's a very strong start to the season by saints, and its on the other teams to better it.

We've also then played the current 15th, 16th, 17th, 19th and 20th (3 of those away - which include our 2 defeats).

Putting this another way, i've asked CoPilot to put the following together - its based only on the current league position, not the league position at the time of playing.

Spygate is done and dusted, we look to have gone up a gear, and we're moving into a period where squad depth matters and we will be playing more of the struggling bottom half sides than our rivals. It looks to be a good position to be in, we are beating or drawing with our rivals.

We do need to make sure we stop dropping points against the weaker sides - but i would say this is ominous for our rivals.
