Man City v Saints Build-up [League Cup]

I'd opt for something like a 4-4-1-1

Mccarthy (It's league cup and he should have been ahead of Gunn based on form anyway)

Stephens (Tough i like Valery as a wingback but after an awful game and in a back four maybe stephens, but can't say i'm enthusiastic about the prospect)

Vokins (With one left back who's suspended it's the perfect time to see if vokins can offer anything

Danso (Deserves a game in his preferred position and the others hardly showered themselves in glory)

Yoshida (Experience, had to pick one of him or bednarek)

Boufal (Played ok this season, so might as well try and push their fullbacks back)

Hojberg (Not many options, still probably need his energy)

Romeu (Been our best player this season imo)

Redmond (Our most talented player)

Armstrong (Deserves a shot at a game not a 2 minute cameo)

Obafemi (He's got pace, he's not shane long)

Subs

Lewis, Valery, Bednarek, Slattery, JWP, Ings, Adams

The first minutes in Manchester will be suspenseful for me:

1) Which men are on the pitch? The same like Friday with new dedication? If 8 new men, how will they perform?

2) Will they really fight, whoever plays?

3) What happens after an early goal? Shocked like on Friday? Showing resiliance?

4) In the first minutes, will they defend as silly as on Friday or act like professionals?

I am looking forward. Real suspense. I hope I find a stream.

It's pretty difficult trying to pick a team right now. Probably more to do with some of their reactions rather than if they're any good. Would be a big call to stick Vokins in away at City, after just losing 9-0 but we have no-one else, hopefully Cedric is fit? Valery had his worst game for us Friday so would like to drop him too but again - who else? Danso at LWB? Hojbjerg? JWP?

I'd go...

----------------------McCarthy

Valery - Bednarek - Yoshida - Danso - Cedric?

--------------JWP----Romeu---Hojbjerg

---------------------Redmond

-----------------------Long--------------------

See no benefit of going to a 4 at the back, but we just have such a limited squad right now. Would actually quite like to stick the same team out and make them make amends, and see if they're up for the fight. But also a load of changes wouldn't be a bad idea. The fact I don't even know what system or players to pick is a massive concern and probably one of the reasons why we can't just get any continuity in our performances.

Can we just see a Saints team this season run out without Ward-Prowse? It would allow an attacking player like Boufal or Armstrong to add something, since WP has not offered an attacking or defending attribute to the side. Oh, and surely Obafemi or Adams instead of Long.

And playing kids at man city isn't fair.

.

Other teams bring in 19 years old men/boys - and they play good! Other teams are proud of their 19/20 years old players, why not SH? RH had 10months time to train and drill the youngsters so they should be ready. Djenepo is only 21 and everybody here is eager to see him playing.

Guessing there is no stream for this game (?).

BellEnd Sports aka BeIn Sports ex Al Jazeira Sports in Mid East has it listed on their Live Channels, so presumably other channels, will so Streams should be out there ... just finding them.

For a nice (?) change I'll be at the match, so begging letters from me, but keep up the good work those who provide the links to those who cant make it to the game!!

I still think our midfield 3 is the biggest problem. Such a lack of mobility in there that they get so easily overrun. Unfortunately we don't have any other 'specialists' in those positions so I think we need to try something different. Romeu with Armstrong and Redmond either side? Seems very attacking but then I don't see what jwp and hojbjerg add defensively anyway. They are ball recyclers at best and we arent going to see much of the ball anyway. At least with a bit of pace and trickery in there we might be able to win a few loose balls and launch some counters?

I'd suggest, that every away fan, stands and turns their collective backs on the team, when they take to the field, show them a reaction!
We have the prize for the most ridiculous suggestion.

Many things went wrong on Friday but fans turning on the team before they've even been given a chance to show a reaction tonight really is going to do nothing to help the situation.

When the players come on to the pitch for warm up, are we suppose to applaud them?

Why not?

New game, encouragement would be the best response followed by deprecating/gallows humour if it turns into Friday the second.

If they do put in a good response that is something to cheer.

No mate....... lets start seeing them pull their finger out of their backside and put a shift in, then the fans should start clapping them. I am not going (but will be there saturday) and I don't agree with booing when they come out but I wouldnt clap either tonight. They don't deserve it.

What would it take for you to not clap them when they come out?

I don’t usually agree with much of what Adrian Durham has to say on TalkSport, but last night he was rightly laying into the Gooners about booing their own captain when he left the pitch. The team need support when things are going badly more so than when things are going well. They don’t need to be reminded how embarrassing Friday not was for everyone involved with SFC. They need to be encouraged to get over it, move on and do better. None of us expect a result tonight, but a performance with effort and pride will be a move in the right direction.

I sort of agree might as well try to be positive at the start, but if the players crumble and put in the same lack of effort as Friday I can see the fans really starting to turn on them , and quite rightly so, the overpaid mercenaries don’t deserve the support of the fans.

Looks like we sold out the lower tier but only about 80 seats in the middle tier, will be surreal for the fans up there plenty of room to spread out.

We play City twice in a week and I can't see us winning both (haha) but winning in a cup game tonight and

still being in a cup competition will focus the manager and players minds on another major final which

can only be a positive.

Their goalkeeper Ederson might be rested as will Stirling. Stones might get a run out which is good for us

and the rest of the City team will be mostly youth team.

The only other real danger is Ralph's team selection.

That midfield is probably the main reason why we are struggling, jwp is utter gash and offers nothing but a good free kick now and again, Romeu cant pass for toffee and hojbjerg cant seem to play with any of the other 2. Since we cant really do anything about our shocking defence, why don't we drop all 3 of them ( or at least 2 of them ) and find something that works? Smallbone, Slattery Danso?

Playing 3 CB's we don't need to play 2 Dcm's, we could try Danso at DCM and try playing Boufal instead of Jwp to inject a bit of pace into the midfield, the 3rd could be Hoj/smallbone or someone else. I was always told when i was young that the midfield is the engine of the team, they need to do all the running and inject the energy to get the rest of the team working, all 3 of them are slow and sluggish, time for a change!

Vokins did ok in preseason why not give him a run out, its not like we have any other LB.

Smallbone has not played all season for the Under 23's - presumably injured. Maybe Slattery will get a game tonight instead of JWP.

Maybe we worth playing the same team tonight and Saturday, letting them suffer.

Then make the changes for the winnable games.

Bring in McCarthy, Bertrand, Cedric, Danso, Armstrong, Boufal, Djenepo after two city humiliations.

Is Bertrand eligible? 3 games isn’t it

I can't see us winning this. Even a second string City side will be full of players who would probably walk into our matchday squad.

Given that what constitutes an improvement? Narrow 1-0 defeat, only conceding twice, scoring a goal, players just looking like they actually give a **** and working hard?

At the moment I'm assuming the players will come out of the traps all fired up make Man City look ordinary for the first 3-4 minutes of the game. Then we wil concede from City's first attempt on goal after some crap mistake by our defence. Heads will then drop and city will take us apart. We will lose 4-0 and the O/s will run a story praising our improvement since the Leicester game..

I hate the term ‘ball recycler’ just a polite term for talentless, unimaginative midfielder who passes sideways and backwards. I don’t ****ing want our midfielders to just ‘recycle’ the ball but we have three of the ****ers capable of little else and no alternatives so they basically have to play every game.

Totally agree! ffs please leave JWP out, he offers nothing other than the odd freekick and keepers are getting wise to his methods. We need drive in the midfield.
