were we mean to Ian Wright?

they didn’t clap you after the game, they wanted to report you

That line probably sums up why. I do remember him getting a bit of stick from the fans and giving it back, but it wouldn't surprise me if some of the soppy divs in our fan base went running to the police if he said anything back. Personally i always liked him, passionate and talented footballer and a bit of a character.

Yes, because our fanbase is the only one with some morons in it. Come on Turkish.

he says himself, as quoted above, they wanted to report him, thats why, not the banter, because our fans couldn't take the banter, they could dish it out but couldn' take it back. Hardly surprising given this forum is a cross section of our support.

Turkish, what are you talking about? What exactly did Ian Wright do which prompted him being reported? We don't know. You have jumped to the assumption that it was 'banter', based on nothing. Hey, at least it allows you to have a go at the fans who aren't 'ard and abusive. How very dare they sit in their seats and enjoy the game in their own way?

He used to get loads of abuse from the lower east stand, not the type of booing that you lot probably associate now at st marys, but proper close up, hear every word abuse that really gets to players, think that is why the big teams hated playing at the Dell.

and turkish is right, there were a few players who used to give it back and some of our fans went running to stewards to make a complaint. It happened once with Beckham as well. pathetic.

I remember the banter because unlike a lot on here i was at a lot of the games. I am not talking about people not be 'ard and abusive, what i am saying is if a player gets a bit of abuse from sections of the crowd, dont go running to the old bill if he gives a bit back. If i called someone "a c*nt" i wouldn't go and report him if he called me one back. Which is exactly what happened in the case of Ian Wright.

I do recall a time at the Dell when Wright was leaving the pitch he received a torrent of abuse - usual bad language (possibly some racism). Wrighty did a v-sign and believe he swore back (along lines of ****-off). All of a sudden we had a rush of idignant fans that were disgusted with Ian Wrights language (but were happy to turn a blind eye to the foul language coming from their own fans) and reported him to the police.

So I'm with Turkish on this one.

Mock indignation from fans when a player replies is rather pathetic and I'm not surprised by Ian Wrights comments on this occassion.

So you're enjoying your moderating job atm then?

When did I imply that? It's completely far removed from the point I was trying to make. Why do people think Saints fans are so unique.

Every club has moaners

Every club has racists

Every club has abusive loudmouths

Every club has Loud singers

Every club has a prawn sandwhich brigade

Every club has a scapegoat player

Every club has opposing players they don't like

Every club has opposing players who hate playing against them

Every club has fans who are just plain retarded

Every club has sensationalist internet message boards.

Agree, but its all about the proportions of each. Get too many and the atmosphere is pretty static or sour.

That's seems a little surprising to me??

At Mattys testimonial he was having a right laugh with the fans and I never remember him getting any more attention than any other player when he played against us.

Didn't he do an interview when BWP joined saying how much he loved the club and how he pushed the boy to join us????

He was great and got a great reception at Matt's testimonial - but before that he always got a lot of abuse at the Dell - mainly coz he always gave 110% and always scored against us - and enjoyed celebrating that

I suspect that partly the reason for him singling us out, is that we had the smallest ground in the Premiership, therefore the most intimidating atmosphere. I very much doubt that our fans were particularly more petty or niggly than other clubs' fans, but the players were much closer to hearing the individual comments.

I recall an incident involving Les Ferdinand where somebody hurled a massively abusive tirade at him from near the dugout, West Stand at the Dell. He just turned around and laughed and the tension just melted away and most just laughed with him. Players who react and give it back, just stoke it up further.

Those who respond with a tirade of foul-mouthed swearing, risk being reported, not necessarily by those who also dished it out, but by those nearby with young children. Easy to identify the player f'ing and blinding, but less easy to identify somebody in the crowd, so if the players get into trouble through it, then they must accept that they have been stupid to respond.

I recall a game at the Dell v Leeds (or might have been west ham) when Le Tissier went to take a corner in front of the away fans in the lower east, they were giving him loads of abuse and as there was a delay in play Le Tiss just sat down on the wall and had a laugh with them.

i recall a game at highbury, super kenny monkou knocked him over in a challenge, he (KM) went over to help him up and Wrighty kicked him in his chest for his efforts. if i didnt like him before then i disliked him after, and now i really dont like him.

really really

Think he's not that far wrong though.

I have been to loads of other grounds and you don't usually get that many where a lot of fans spend most of the game gesticulating at the away fans, singing "who are ya" and then reacting with throat slitting actions when the away fans dare to sign anything back. Perhaps supporting the team might be a better use of their time?

Also had a look at other forums and I really don't see the negativity on theirs that I see on here a lot.

The response to this thread sums it up with so many reacting by calling Ian Wright names for daring to critisize the wonder supporters.

People need to take a hard look at themselves. It is only a game after all! I enjoy giving a player some stick with the rest of them (especially when it's witty) but after the game it's all done you give both sides a clap and go home. But our fans hold a grudge (How many still hate Roy Keane as he dared to mock our relegation?) and returning players should get a good reception whereas more often than not we give them stick....

Cue being called an enemy of the state etc......

Its common thing in football now. Look at Arsenal fans with Adebayor last year. Loved giving him stick, but when he shut them up by scoring and celebrating in front of them they couldnt take it.

At Leeds last year I was giving their fans loads of abuse, they scored, they gave me loads of abuse. At the end of the game I walked up the steps and I clapped the few guys I was having banter with. They did the same.

Agree totally. If you dish it out, be prepared to take it back !

It's slightly different with Adebeyor though, being an ex player and the way he left, however i agree though, if they cant take it dont dish it out, i fully believe that. I think most african or any player for that matter would react to a song such as

"adebeyor, adeebeyyooroorooor

Your dad washes elephants

your mums's a whore."
