Are saints safe??

No, 42+ is absolute safety, 40 or above likely to be good enough. Besides which, with much more money per league place than when we were last in the PL, we want to finish as high as we can. Defeat on Saturday would drop us right back into deep trouble, a draw would be OKish but a win would be a big stride forward. What gives me encouragement is Sunderland's fairly nasty run in and Wigan's game in hand is at Man City.

I'd say we are nearly there, so not quite yet.

Agree, win at Reading on Sat, and I think we are nearly there.

I do however think we are in no worse a position than any of the sides below us, which means there are 6 other teams that going to need to outperform us for us to fill the 18th spot (this is on the assumption that Reading and QPR are down, which I think they are). I find this scenario pretty unlikely, which is why I see our chances of survival as pretty good, at the minute.

No team has ever stayed up when needing 7 points from 7 games, it would be highly unlikely for one of them to stay up, let alone two.

No, we're not safe. Not close even. We're safe when we mathmatically cannot go down.

Do I think we WILL be safe? Yes, I've seen enough progression in the club to think we'll pick up enough points needed.

Mathematically No

Form wise and general felling about the club (including squad availability) Yes we are as we are in the perfect position to keep this sort of good form up till the end of the season whilst the teams around/below us panic.

i say YES

1) We are playing very well

2) The form of JROD, Lambert, Spider, Shaw, Yoshi

3) We have a winning mentality

4) Worse teams than us below us

5) We have an easy run-in

If the above factors (which I agree with) lead us to pick up AT LEAST 6 points from the next 7 games (and lets be honest - most of us expect it will be more) then we can all breathe easy and look forward to next season on the PL.

No. We could be only 1 point clear of the relegation zone if Saturday doesn't go quite to plan.

Not until we are mathematically safe will I relax.

This.

Anyone who thinks we are safe already is bat**** mental.

Yet there are people talking about us finish 6th next season with the same players.

Look at Everton, if they can do it, we can. We're a bigger club than them with bigger support and are better equipped to challenge the Top 4. This relegation battle we've been involved in all season and are still heavily involved in is a mere minor blip.

Of course not. The club has to be professional and approach each game with a steely determination. There will be some twists and turns to come and only when we cannot be mathematically caught will we be safe.

I also agree with many posters, a win against Reading will be highly significant !

Mathematically no but based upon our current form as opposed to others I'd say we'll be several points clear come the final day. If shown on a graph, our form over recent games would show an upward curve with points per game being as high as a team like Fulham or Everton (I'm guessing but I'll bet I'm not far out) as opposed to the likes of Norwich, Stoke, Sunderland, Newcastle and even West Ham who are losing points hand over fist. We're playing as well as at any time this season and our players and manager are full of confidnce. Us getting relegated is as likely as Pompey getting promotion!!!!! Have some faith.

No we're not. Only 4 points clear, Wigan have a very winnable game vs QPR and we have a banana skin at the weekend.

It's actually surprising to see some bookies having us at 33/1 to go down.

Why do you describe a game vs QPR as "very winnable" and a game vs Reading as a "banana skin"?

Our odds to go down are lengthening because we are in good form and although the league is very tight, with Saints in 12th it would require us to have worse form over the next 7 games than a large number of teams below us (many of which aren't great and are in terrible form).

Games at Reading, Sunderland and Tottenham will be against teams fired up to beat us for their own different reasons, our away form is not that great so we are well capable of losing those games. Swansea have nothing to play for but never the less are a very capable team so it's possible we won't get many more away points. If we don't beat West Ham and WBA that leaves us needing to beat Stoke on the last day and anything could happen. This may be a very pessimistic analysis but this is football and stranger things have happened (see 1948/9). We are currently in a good position but we are by no means safe.

We're obviously not safe mathematically, but in terms of current form, we must be very positive and motivated, having beaten the likes of Liverpool, Man City and Chelsea.

We ought to have beaten Wigan, QPR and Newcastle recently too, but which would we have preferred, beating them or the three teams at the top?

No eyebrows would have been raised if we beat the three lower down teams and although the loss of points that they would have suffered would have helped us increase the gap over them, I'd still take beating those top teams every time, because of the bragging rights, the pundits' noses put out of joint and the upsets caused to plastic fans all over the country.

Not yet, if we win on Monday we will be 3 points away imo.

We play Reading on Saturday, pal........

Ignore just seen a couple of other posts pointing it out.

My personal thoughts though are pretty much like others......when we are mathematically safe I will keep the thought that we could be playing in the Championship next year. On current form etc we should be ok but for some reason we seem to struggle against teams that play counter attacking football.

I thought that 38 points would be safe but I think it'll take 40 points to make sure of it. I don't think Reading or QPR have a hop in hell of catching us (especially if we beat Reading on Sat) but that third spot is very much up for grabs between anyone from us downwards. I do think that it will come down to Villa, Wigan and Sunderland but we need to make sure that we take maximum points so that there will be no bricking it come the last day.

Reading, WH, WBA, Sunderland, Stoke. 5 winnable games, need to win 2 of them. I'm not worried. Think we'll end on 46 points, which given the start to the season is amazing.

didn't I see somewhere that after our abysmal start (4pts from 10 games), we have been the 8th best team in the competition, which with having to build confidence and play catch-up football is pretty damn marvellous.

Win our remaining home games and we're fine (WBA/WHU/Stoke)

9 points from our last 7 should be doable to be honest. Would give us 43 points and some breathing space as well I'd imagine. I doubt we'll even need as many as 9 to be honest.

(if we can't manage 9 points from 27 with the fixtures we have remaining, then something has gone wrong!)

It's too early to say we're safe, but I think we're in a position now (and with our run-in) where it would take something catastrophic for us to go.

I think we're probably in a false position really, we're much better than the rabble down there. It's just our start has meant that we are down there. Based on our form since November we're no where near them, I see no reason why that shouldn't continue. Quality wise, I think we're on a different level to the likes of Wigan, Villa, Norwich, Reading etc.

After the brilliant win over Chelsea, it would be easy to think,"Job done!" That however is far from the case and I will not agree that we are safe until we get at least 40 points and the team in eighteenth place cannot achieve that. I am hopeful of winning all our remaining matches, but realise that we still look vulnerable at corners and free kicks, not to mention quick breakaways. Just hoping that old habits have been abandoned with the new management in charge and that the high pressure attacking style brings us our rewards.
